I agree. It was a rotten song. Personally I am not a fan of that type of guitar-wanking "blues", where the rest of the band is just a background for hotshot lead guitar playing. Lyrically, the "political" observations were not much deeper than what any sixth grader could have come up with. Come one, Mick, you used to be a great lyricist - you can do much better.

Rap stars, like Lil Wayne just beat their fans up. Rolling Stones fan have to suffer the eternal indignity that is Sir Mick's solo "career."

I wonder if Jeff thought, "I flew in for this?" It was a wasted opportunity to bring that "Wow, that kicked ass!" factor that they secured from that White House event.

What I don't understand is that Sir Michael who is famous for not having any opinions about anything suddenly bashes out this lame critism about American politics. He did it twice before though with "Highwire" and "Sweet neocon". Credo: He has no political opinions but he doesn't like the Tea Party. Or something?

I think the song was a bit of a joke. On purpose. And what better place than a comedy show to play a humorous song?

It was a silly throwaway that happened to have Jeff Beck on guitar. Who would sound amazing doing "Mary Had a Little Lamb". It was dumb and fun -- no need to get upset. Though if they had included Arcade Fire and done "Shapes of Things"....

cripes, people, it was just a throwaway jokey ditty done on a comedy show. It will never be performed again, it showed two bluesmasters doing a contemporary lyriced blues instead of a trad blues showing them both doing something new and unheard, it generated political discussion, it caused outrage (some markets bleeped out the word "shit" ), etc. It has crappy words, a misleading title (Romney is an enemy to the woefully misnamed 'Tea Party'), was probably written in 2 minutes, and at root simply sums up the observation 'what a shitty time to be a president with the economic mess'. People looking for it to be more than just a fun cheeky throwaway are missing the point.

I'm really glad it has its own thread though; I couldn't find any threads on Mick's SNL appearance! /s

The lyrics are far from "stupid" - actually quite clever and don't particularly aggravate one political point of view or another. The lyrical content was somewhat humorous and perfectly in line with a comedy show. Jagger and Beck's performances were boisterous, the vocals had an extravagant and farcical style, the performace and the song were unexpected. A fitting moment on a memorable night.

It was a throwaway moment, but exactly the type of political humor you'd expect to find on SNL.

I assume it was the result of Mick wanting to perform something silly and the episode running short on time. By choosing to do a long segment with Foo Fighters, Mick didn't leave himself much time to jam with Beck before Kristen Wiig's send-off.

yeah,he did sort of gloss it over but where was the shot at obama if it was supposed to be an even kinda thing.

I agree. At first I was afraid Mick would venture into a partisan bashing like so many other musicians but it was just a light hearted jest towards Romney. Anyone that got insulted must take themselves or their politics too seriously.

Whatever! No matter what you may think, there are still huge philosophical differences between the parties....and you may be right that the prez is merely a puppet for the large corporations and the military. Mick is on the side that he believes to be more balanced and fair. It is a free country the last time I looked and he surely is entitled to say what he thinks. The point is, it was not meant to be taken as seriously as you are taking it. It was a filler, a short bluesy tune meant as a lark. I do wish that they had done another song together because I happen to enjoy Beck and that particular style of blues.

Damn, there are some serious people! When two British blues giants decide to do a one timer, their own take of 'talking blues', with an original, funny, poltical tongue-in-a-cheek lyrics in the context of a live American comedy show, instead of, say, covering for 2000th time a Muddy, Wolf or Hooker standard everyone knows, people are disappointed. I am sure these people would have booed Muddy Waters out, if he wouldn't have done enough familiar Big bill Broonzy or Roert Johnson numbers, but instead in the spark of moment came up with something original for the occasion. Maybe even with something a bit controversial...

Thanks Mick and Jeff for giving us a little spark of good spirits, and sense of creativity. You are not dead yet, and not yet to be cemented to some @#$%& museum. Once again, you English guys gave a lesson of the blues to American audiences...

Most of all, Mick and Jeff seemed enjoying working together. A joy to follow their co-work. They seem to inspire each other. And Mick's voice and Beck's guitar are helluva blues instruments. It needs guns like that to make something worthwhile and unique out of the formally easy blues scale format. Kids, don't even think to try that at home.
