Being an old punk from Huntington Beach , that's something I never thought I'd see...........

So true. Who would've thought Mick would ever share a stage with a member of the Germs?

Is Pat in or out of the Foo Fighters? One gig he's there the next he's not. Is there really room for a third guitarist?

Yes, he did. And other's saw it as a sign of disrespect that he didn't allow Keith to perform it on him.

It's 'cuz Keith already performed it on him in his book.

He sits some tunes out. Obviously "19th nervous Breakdown" was not a song he was going to sit out. That was very much in my mind too while watching: Pat Smear and Mick Jagger together. Jagger even shook his hand afterwards.

I had similar thoughts during "19th". "Hey, Pat Smear is playing with Mick Jagger. I wonder what my Punk loving ex-girlfriend thinks of this?" (when we dated in the early nineties, she felt the Stones were great, but irrelevant. we had numerous arguments about this.)

For the record, she thought last night was "extremely cool".

As of 2010 he's a full fledged member of the band again who plays on every song off their latest album, Wasting Light, and appears on the album cover as well as playing on every song at every show.

Not to disrespect him. Why do t FF need him. His doesn't do fills or leads. just stands there and plays major bar chords along with Grohl. He didn't even seam plugged in last night. never heard his guitar one.

One guy says 2010 another says he sits out alot. Can't even hear his guitar. Ever.

He began playing with the band again in 2006 on their acoustic tour to help fill out the sound. He played on every song. On their '07/'08 tour, he would join them every night on stage for a few songs that needed an extra guitar. He also played guitar on the track 'Let It Die' off of their 2007 album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. Then in 2010, he rejoined the band as a permanent, full fledged member where he plays on every track on the latest album, Wasting Light, and plays at every show on every song. Although he didn't play on every song at the '07/'08 shows, he still played at every show. So hes pretty much been with them again since 2006.

As for why he's there, I think it has more to do with his relationship with Grohl than anything. When he first quit the band in 1997, it wasn't on the happiest of terms. His departure upset Grohl, but life went on. Then in 2006 when they embarked on their acoustic tour, they were playing with an expanded line up to achieve a more layered sound so Grohl reached out to his old pal Pat Smear to come along as a third guitarist and help fill out the sound. By then I think everything had been fully patched up between them, so Smear just remained in the "fill in" role before eventually just becoming a full member again. Grohl has said that he has always considered Smear a Foo Fighter, even when he wasn't in the band, so I think once he was back in the fold, he didn't want to let him go. He also didn't want to kick out Chris Shiflett, so I think he figured "Why not just have three guitarists?"

Do they NEED three guitarists on every song? No. Pat Smear's role as a guitarist in the Foo Fighters isn't a huge one when it comes to live performances. But it does add a little more texture, and it gives Grohl a chance to play with his old buddy.

Pat is from West L.A. (Maybe he lives in HB now, I don't know)
On the other hand when Taylor Hawkins moved to So Cal, he settled in HB, again, don't know if he lives there now.

The drummer from Foo Fighters reminded me of the Caveman from Cocoa Krispies:

And Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture was playing behind Mick, too (with Arcade Fire). I saw the Strokes once at a club in San Diego and Fraiture was so shy he let his big mop of hair cover his eyes the entire show. So at least last night he let his eyes be seen.
