I finished the very last of the Macarthy's books last night and can say I enjoyed ever single one of them. Oustanding writing and everything about his books is just pure literary quality. My dilemma now is that having read all his, where do I go next? I would like some advice from the many learned IORR's . Can anyone recommend similar writers, preferably dealing with American history?

James Salter is very underrated and a brilliant stylist - my favorite fiction writer. His focus is not on history, although he wrote a book about his experiences flying jets in Korea and an amazing memoir called Burning the Days. Light Years is his best book.

For something harder edged and more historical, James Ellroy (LA Confidential, American Tabloid) is always good.

Cheers.

Have you read Jonathan Franzen's Freedom? It was very good. However, I didn't care much for his earlier book, The Corrections. smoking smiley

"The Death of Bunny Munro" by Nick Cave. Out there on it's own.
