it's quite simple: if you little interest in Donna Summers demise, then don't open this thread. It's the same with the hop-hop threads we've had. If you don't like something, just leave those who do to just get on with their posting.

A soundtrack of my life. Disco was big when I grew up in 70s (and early 80s). She was one of the forefront artists. With disco though it was the sound that mattered not always the artist. It was dance music. And always joyful. Sad to hear about her passing.

Let's start a new rule for everyone. If you hear that someone may have died, don't post it until you've had a confirmed source.

But reporting on the death of someone isn't something that you can just lightly toss around. You never see major news outlets, CNN, ABC, CBS etc... report on a death and then retract it later because it was a rumour. They ALWAYS get a hard source.

My thoughts exactly, sorry I let this poor excuse for a writer lure me into a battle of words.

I pray he keeps this kind of reporting to himself in the future , couldn't stand the thought of hearing about the demise of any of the Stones from this dubious source.

wow glad to see the new post bv made to start this thread properly. Now that is a class act. RIP Donna. peace peace

Not a great fan but Love's Unkind and State of Independence were terrific.

Donna Summer's Bad Girls is one of the defining (and finest) albums of its era -- regardless of musical category -- and that era was one of the most incandescent in the history of Pop / Rock. Bad Girls is a true pop masterpiece...mesmerizing and affecting from beginning to end. Add to this album all of her era-shaping singles...Love To Love You Baby, I Feel Love, McArthur Park, Last Dance, On The Radio, and on and on...and anybody who lived through those years has this woman's art as an indelible memory. I am saddened by her death.

She didn't do anything for disco -it's Giorgio Moroder all the way.

Well I guess Giorgio didn't sing her songs, Mathijs. Of course, behind most artists there is a producer and a songwriter. That doesn't, necessarily, diminish her work.

Yes, doesn't diminish her work at all. That's like saying Rolling Stones didn't do anything for the big 4, it was all Jimmy Miller.

I've notice Mathijs can be grumpy at times.

Of the big 4, Jimmy was only involved in Beggars Banquet.

He wasn't involved in the other big 3 - Aftermath, Between The Buttons, Their Satanic Majesties Request.

That's a bit like saying Elvis didn't do anything for rock & roll because he didn't write or produce.

I don't know whether it's the 'don't speak ill of the dead' thing but no tribute has referred to the alleged aids remarks which sparked Donna Summer record burning parties.

Donna Summer was a songwriter as well - she co-wrote many of her songs, including Love to Love You, Hot Stuff, I Feel Love, Bad Girls, On the Radio, She Works Hard for the Money, etc. She was the sole writer on "Dim All the Lights." In other words, she was no frigging slouch.

Deltics, that was a really good article from the Gay Times - it pretty much clears the whole thing up.

[and David Geffen apparently wasn't to blame for the rumor, contrary to my conspiracy theory!]

She was Hot...Stuff.

Back to back!! Dare to compare!

In '77 "I Feel Love" was an incredible sonic experience....even if you hated disco, you couldn't deny it. Reading that Blondie was covering it live was a BIG DEAL back then during those old music wars.

RIP. Too young to die.

well hbwannabeawriter, I see you are trying to bait me by posting for the third time what I erased and deleted as soon as I thought it was offensive. That shows just what a bottom of the barrel kind of guy you are , what a cad.

I guess it wasn't enough that bv had to go to your thread title and opening post and show you how a real man reports news, something you could have and should have done but you are too busy reading your own words to take note.

What a nice gesture to Donna Summer you have made this thread by reposting that which you thought offensive. Really sad and pathetic gesture. It high time to man up. Although I've no doubt you have no clue how to do so, maybe bv with have to show you again. I hope so. RIP Donna peace

I do know it is Friday night, but please keep this in mind, especially in threads like this one:

If you do not have anything nice to say, then please do not say it here.

PS. I do not own a Donna Summer record, never saw here live, but I do respect all those fans of her who miss her sadly now. General manners and respect, simple as that.

Thanks!

The irony, of course, is that while the Stones Hot Stuff is blacker and funkier, Donna's Hot Stuff displays a more conventional ROCK sensibility. I wasn't a huge fan or anything, but lots of rock people I respect liked her stuff.

From jimmywebb.com

"Donna Summer had her first number one U.S. hit with MacArthur Park in 1978. Jimmy’s only number one hit was this same song with Donna Summer. She was a beautiful muse who took an iconic Jimmy Webb song and with her unending sexy creativity created a completely new and again, iconic version that was emblematic of the disco era. Jimmy is so sad about losing this beauty who performed and interpreted songs with such passion that the listener could not help but to be inspired and excited."

A DJ at my local classic rock station posted this on the station's website.

ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME SNOBS FINALLY GET THEIR SNUB!
THE VOTING SYSTEM IS FLAWED

5/18/2012

The HOF voting system is flawed. Here's an example. Please note I remain a member or D.R.E.A.D (Detroit Rockers Engaged in the Abolition of Disco) With that said...Donna Summer passed away Thursday at the age of 63. She died of cancer. According to Billboard.com Summer had 32 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 in her career, with 14 of those reaching the top 10. Billboard.com ads: Summer was nominated for this year's class, but was passed over. Inductees included Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Faces, Guns N' Roses and The Beastie Boys. Summer was snubbed. Billboard.com also reports: "There is absolutely no doubt that the extraordinary Donna Summer belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," Jon Landau, the chairman of the nominating committee, told the New York Times. "Regrettably, despite being nominated on a number of occasions, our voting group has failed to recognize her -- an error I can only hope is finally and permanently rectified next year."

Really? You and your ‘voting group’ made an error? How dare the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame decide to look through the prism of a rearview mirror! I have repeatedly attempted to petition the ‘Hall’s’ “Snub Club” for membership in the “voting group”. No luck. I have thirty-nine years in this industry. I have cracked the plastic seal on many a new band’s * new offering and asked my radio audience to give these artists a listen and a chance. Many failed…but several changed our lives forever!

Music is personal and subjective. It makes us smile, ponder and help us find that place we need to visit. Maybe the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame could try that?

-KC-

*Bands not inducted

Rush, The Doobie Brothers, Joe Cocker, Peter Frampton, Heart, Electric Light Orchestra, Foreigner, Journey, Steppenwolf, Steve Miller Band, KISS, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Bad Company, The Cars, Yes, The Moody Blues, Chicago, Jethro Tull, Warren Zevon, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Todd Rundgren, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Blue Oyster Cult, The Guess Who, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Judas Priest and many more.
