Detroit 78 Love

I was driving to work at 6:30 am today and popped a boot of this show on. I had seen the Stones in Buffalo a couple of days before this Detroit show, in Rich (now Ralph Wilson) Stadium. It was a great show, but a sloppy performance with crappy sound....still fun and wild, but very different than what they did a couple of days later in Detroit. From Jagger's opening announcement 'And now from England, the Rolling @#$%& Stones!' thru the end they play with a tightness and toughness that is just stunning.

They take songs like Miss You and Shattered, that seem to break down into messes live, and keep them taut. They are a band on top of their game at that moment, and it's great to hear and imagine being there, in a small, sweaty, loud venue, with Keith really PLAYING riffs, Ronnie hitting every lead, Mike on fire, and Stu and Mac providing great support from the keys. Wyman is a rock holding it all together.

I sincerely hope this becomes the next in the 'bootleg series'. Though my boot (which I downloaded thanks to the generosity of posters on this site) sounds great I would buy the official release, too.

I loved the 78 tour. I often feel like the European Brothers and sisters got short changed that year.
Hadn't considered a 78 release for the remaining Stones shows; but good idea.
It still blows me away just how much better all these cuts sound,. once they get the 'official' treatment. Not just live - the other day "I Love You Too Much" from SG Deluxe comes on my player, and I am digging on the intro. I know it's the Stones but I can't place the title right away. For a minute I am thinking it's one of the deeper Bigger Bang tracks.

It was the best of tours (Detroit). It was the worst of tours (Cleveland).

Recorded evidence from the era points to the boys being more inspired in the smaller, indoor settings that year.
