Rolling Stones breakthrough album?
Posted by: Kevinrm15 ()

Would anyone by chance know what is considered to be the Stones' breakthrough album? Some say Some Girls, and quite frankly I would agree. But was that really the album for the Stones like what A Night at the Opera was for Queen or Born to Run Bruce Springsteen or Damn the Torpedoes Tom Petty? Thank you!

First breakthrough/evolution - Aftermath
Second breakthrough/evolution - Beggars Banquent
Third breakthrough/evolution - Some Girls

Best albums - Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, & Exile On Main Street

I'd say it was Sticky Fingers, in terms of public awareness, sales, and quality.

It had it all.

The debut album would in and of itself be a breakthrough of sorts...I don't think it broke as massively with the public as a few subsequent albums though.

For me it was Let It Bleed. It announced them as something more than the run of the mill rock groups.

I would say Aftermath since it was the first where they wrote all the songs but unlike other artists like Springsteen (Born to Run) or Green Day (Dookie) there really isn't a definitive breakout album for The Stones. It was more like a gradual gaining of mometum as the sixties went on.

"There's a guy in my block, he lives for rock he plays records day and night. And when he feels down, he puts some
rock 'n' roll on and it makes him feel alright. And when he feels the world is closing in he turns his stereo way up high.
He just spends his life, living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy."

If I had to identify a moment when the stones really becomes THE STONES (really became what they are) it would be the recording of Honky Tonk Women.

"I remember thinking this is it, don't screw it up" - Keith, on recording HTW

DAMN, you're older than I thought ROCKMAN!

In that case, my 'breakthrough album' was Emotional Rescue.

Album has to be Aftermath. Before that Id call the singles era despite the strong debut and the great Out of our Heads.

I've no doubt the breakthrough single had to be Satisfaction.

It was just so much bigger than anything before it.

Their first one! It was number 1 for months. Cant get more of a 'breakthrough' than that!

Yeah, right enough, they'd only had about ten number 1 singles and albums by then, been around for 15 years, become icons of the 60s counter culture, played to about 15 million people, sold about 150 million records and been one of the most imitated bands of all time.

They were bubbling well under the public radar until 1978. eye rolling smiley

I think Beggars is the band's first great mature work. I am not sure if that means a "breakthrough" or not, but I think there is little in the band's history that prepares you for that album. I give much credit to the production. It is a deceptively straightforward album. It breaks new ground and taps previous musical genres. It was a stunning recording at the time and is still a thrilling listen. Of all the band's sessions I would like to be a fly on the wall for those. The band was on to something. The filler is Dear Doctor and lyric-wise that is as good a song Jagger-Richards ever wrote. There is not a word out of place.

I say the first one was a breakthrough and then it just kept getting better.

With the Stones it was the first album. Once they broke in they took off running and never looked back. Sure there were later albums that had changes, maturity ect but for the purpose of a "breakthrough", it has to be the first.

I don't think Some Girls was a breakthrough as much as a revisement of the band's sound. It was tightened and there was less distinction between the two guitars.

I think for the Stones, the real breakthrough didn't come by way of album, but rather by way of the single, that being Satisfaction. Upon further reflection, Big Hits, (High Tide and Green Grass) may be the actual breakthrough album as it assembled all the 'first half' of the sixties singles together on one disc, and it sold like a bitch.

They didn't really become an album's band until Aftermath, with full maturity on Beggar's, and the full meal deal on Sticky.

The hot single, the iconic album cover, the monster sales, no beatles.

They were peerless.

If it was a single it was 'Little Red Rooster' or 'Tell Me' from 1964...
Between the buttons opened up for Jimi Hendrix Experience.....

Breakthrough to what? Fame, money, Las Vegas?

The Stones never had a breakthrough album per se. Albums mostly just where vehicles to support a tour. Most important for the Stones where the singles with Satisfaction as their absolute breakthough, and JJF and HTW putting them back on track. Exile and the '72 tour then really defined the Stones as Greates RnR band in the World. Some Girls was not a breakthrough album, but more of a comeback album.
