OT: Alabama Shakes

I was in the Barnes and Noble today and kept hearing this music which sounded to me like some obscure Stax compilation I had never heard. One soung after another of great Memphis-style soul and Cropper-esque guitars. Turns out it was a new band called Alabama Shakes. I bought the CD immediately (I NEVER do that). You can hear Al Green in the singer's voice. These kids have it. A breath of fresh air.

Nice. Sounds like I Got The Blues and Let It Loose had a baby.

Reminds me of Janis. A great singer in a mediocre band.

I disagree about them being a mediocre band. They sound pretty darn good. I agree about this being a melding of Let it Loose and I've Got the Blues. Sounds very good!

I discovered them a few months ago.
The voice is nice, even if she sometimes sounds like a pale imitation of Janis.
The album is a nice listen though

Sounds a bit unoriginal (a little too retro), but I suppose they're better than alot of other new bands,
and I'd be happy to see them in a bar for free during Happy hour.

I think the comparisons to Janis are superficial. I guess every time a woman singer is influenced by the blues, Janis comparisons are inevitable. I'm not that big a Janis fan. These guys are much more Stax-Memphis influenced than Janis was.

Damning with faint praise?

I saw them live last week in Brixton. Great voice and crisp sound, but I tend to agree that the band is mediocre.

This band is great. Couldn't believe what I was hearing the first time I listened to their music.

Great band.

I was just going to post that I'd heard them today through a friend.

Great minds think alike and fools seldom differ, I guess.

Nice to see the love for these up-and-comers. I am a fairly jaded older guy and I like very little that is new. These guys really caught my ear. I love their unpretentiousness and the pure joy thay find in their music. The tasty singing and Memphis guitar sounds don't hurt either.

I saw them live last week in Bitterzoet in Amsterdam, Holland. We had a great evening!Lot's of soul, but also rocking and the lady singer sings her heart out!
Earlier that night they were on Dutch television (DWDD)and were announced as the hottest band of this moment....

I like the idea and the playing is fine(the guitarist is quite Ronnie-ish i think) but the songs themselves are pretty average imo.

The drummer stood out for me too as not being especially good. Maybe he'll improve.
