There is misfit here, which is due to different meanings in American English v. French

In French, "Republican" is neutral, it is not party-related. It means you accept the others' opinions, per opposition with absolutism.

We have also another word which varies a lot from the two sides of the Atlantic. "Liberal" is more or less left wing minded in the U.S., while a "Liberal" in French is labelled as a strong partisan of the free market.
yes, exactly !
that's why I said that Mickscarey misunderstood when I wrote to Sway : "Play the republican game".
In France, it means to accept the defeat and let the other wing have the power.

Play the republican game.

I don't give 6 months to the "republique" as you call it -the people- to cry for help and a new president .The new one will make a mess from our country and lead it to bankrupt.

Already the case. Hollande/Sarko don't have any real differences on the important topic. The real economy will be decided by Brussel, Hollande will have to implement austerity like the supposedly "socialist" Papandreou did.

Sarko is anyway a traitor (signed the European treaty that had just been rejected by referendun, sold France's gold, brought France back into NATO...) so good to see him away (will probably go to the US - his real country).

This fuss about a 53-old Sarkozy celebrating his 2007 victory for a single night in a 3,000-euro suite or so at his own expense at Fouquet's five star hotel has been quoted to death in French press, yet is a nonsense.

- nobody in France has nothing to say against hundreds of other people having every day the same experience, either royalties, anonymous, or rock stars. For the record, the Stones are famous to book lavished suites at the George V since being in their mid twenties. Do you object anything about that? It seems not.

- Instead of being mad about the business at Fouquet's, some people in France should be wise to consider it as an asset of high-end tourism, which in return provides hundred of qualified jobs, and also hundred of millions euro in tax

- As a totally anonymous individual, I have myself wasted with pleasure more than 12,000 euros both in 40 Licks Tour and in A Bigger Bang tour, with little pleasure as paying 1,050 euros for a single ticket in a club in Philadelphia. I know for sure I am not the only one on this board. Do you think a single night in a suite for a new elected president is worst?

Your viewpoint as an American probably... different stance toward money. In France/Latin countries, we don't care if a politic has affairs with ladies... yet in the US this is regarded as the ultimate sin.

Having said that, i don't have a problem with a president staying in the presidential suite in a hotel while on a trip...

First sorry to say but you're not a President... who has claimed everywhere that he will be the man who will save our country and in the same time says that a President should earn more, that was one of his first decision.
5 years later, his official toll is disastrous except for his buddys who are very happy of his politic ,and probably have earned more money in 5 years than in their whole life.
And by the way telling the whole world that you've spent more than 12000 euros during the 40 Licks Tour and A Bigger Bang Tour and that you have paid 1050 euros for one ticket is not something that amazed me, I think it has something indecent when most of the people who read this board doesn't earn such cash in one year...
But I'm happy for ya if it was for your pleasure.

i) As for the price of the tickets, I stated it as pure fact, and I just did it related to the thread. Nothing to brag about it, but nothing to hide either. By the way, I have met some nice Japanese who went to 200 Stones concert, and I think our webmaster went to some 300 shows, so I guess this is a total nightmare to you in term of money. And IORR is not the whole world, just a bunch of lunatics, including myself. You overreact

ii) Last time I checked, I had a French passport.

in politics, symbols do matter.
This act from Sarkozy the very day he was elected was very clumsy. 8 millions people in France live under the poverty point (about 950 €/month) and almost as many of them live in bad housing.
The right wing had been ruling France presidency since 1995 with Chirac and Sarkozy. To me, they have a huge responsibility in this failure.
Furthermore, they have been very generous with the most well off.
Now, that's enough !

Yes, is well known that he took out his Carte Bleu and paid with his own money (ha, ha, ha), then he went on vacation on this private yatch (with no conflict of interest)....If I remember correctly he told us that if elected he would spend a few days in a monastary, just one of hundreds of lies.

Why is thread still open???

TODAY we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the suicide bombing that killed 14 ppl incl. 11 French workers that took place in Karachi, Pakistan.

At first we blamed Al-Qaida... only to discover recently that the attack happened in retaliation for unpaid bribes to the Pakistan gov in an arms (submarines) deal.

And guess who sealed the deal back in 1994? Sarkozy! He was raising funds for his master Ed Balladur who running for the 1995 Presidential elections.

As long as he was our Prez Sark had a complete immunity but now that he's back to being a nobody there are a few D.A.'s here that are dying to hear what he has to say about the subs and the bribes...

My guess is Shark-ozy will soon fly to Venezuela or Uruguay!

The first round was "Sarko, go home!" and Holland was the tool to do that. In less than one week the second round will start... wait and see. Crossing fingers! Personally, I will be happy when I'll see Sakozy at the bottom of the steps of the Elysee palace, shaking hands with Hollande et go away. That's all!

You French be glad that DSK hasn't become the ('socialist') president! That would have been une blague insurpassable.

kleemaker,
yes Mitterrand probably ordered the plot against the Rainbow Warrior but it was not meant to kill anyone but to sink the Greenpeace boat.
I did not approve this action anyway.
But to talk about Mitterrand just around the Rainbow Warrior is a bit short.
That should not make forget that he did lots of good things for France French people and Europe.

yes it was an ugly mess : there were TWO bombs under the RW ship : the 1st one was the smaller one : it was supposed to make eveyone exit the ship in panic. Then the 2nd bigger one would sink the empty ship for good.
It worked "fine"... except after the 1st detonation Pereira decided to re-enter the boat to get his photo gear. sad smiley

Missing the point baby boy. Bring it on. The point (sorry you did not get past 8th grade so I will try to explain) is that this site is 99 percent left-leaning and the second anyone defends the other side you get all out of shape and it is this same left-leaning bloc that continually takes shots -- no matter how benign the subject matter (should I explain "benign"?) and then uses things such as race baiting, accusations of racism, and such to "defend" themselves while trying to take others down. (Let me know if you understand.)
