Seiko pays tribute to the Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary

To celebrate Seiko introduced in Basel tribute a new watch, the Rolling Stones 50th
Anniversary Limited Edition.

It will be available from August 24, for an approximate price from 5225 Euros.

525 Euros would be plausible. You can't charge 5225 Euros for a Seiko watch.

Seiko has a high end line too. Here's one on ebay for over $7000, also not gold.
Wonder how much the gold one will cost?

I agree, this is gratuitous BS. I rarely bash the boys/organization, but fk this.
It is one thing when they are making new music and touring and selling crap associated with that... but it is another to simply whore out the Stones name and (supposed... whenever the hell it really is) 50th anniversary to sell over priced $8,000 watches (that are proably be resellable(even in 20 years) for less than 50 bucks) simply to add another drop of money in their already massive bucket of money.

I am still their biggest fan, love all the music I have and am happy with all the crap I have wasted my money on... I am not sorry about any of it... but I wont be giving them another penny (except for actual music e.g. vault releases) until Mick and Keith themselves exert some actual musical effort and I dont mean a simple stint on SNL and I sure as hell dont mean the lackadaisical effort exerted to hire a bunch of marketing schmucks to dream up more crap to sell under the Stones name. It would be nice to see a wide boycott, and low sales for this shit... but that will never happen. They will probably sell a thousand of these, and that is why they do it.

This is how it works: Right now, they are in the "testing demand" stage. If
demand is weak, they'll only make a hundred or two. They will all sell of
course, because watch collectors want very limited editions, which historically
do hold their value. But if demand is decent, then maybe they might make a
thousand or two. At most.

Nothing like holds it "retail" value... [www.ebay.com] not a watch listed at over 50 bucks, some of these sold for hundreds of Dollars, at least.

I should add... Thank you for the post superrevvy.
Please know that when I say fk this... I am talking about this over priced watch, not you or your post. Your post was interesting and appreciated smiling smiley Even if it is about an over priced Stones watch, it is Stones news.

Thank you for the post.

No worries, Max.

And I guess my only point is that the value of this particular collectable will
be based more on the fact that it is a limited edition Seiko Galante than
the Stones angle (which I still think will help its value in the long run).

Here's a much more mundane 2010 stainless steel Seiko that still sold at
Sotheby's for about US$5000 recently.

My inexpert guess is that if you can find one of the Stones ones, next year let's
say, after the 50th hubbub is over, and get a remainder for less than $3000,
that you will do very well in the long run.

Would I wear one? Not unless you paid me.

I love them bobbleheads. I was actually with someone at the Melbourne show who
bought them things at the original price, which shocked me. But there was that
brief period when the remainders got knocked down to about 25% of the original
price. Can't believe I didn't buy them then.

Actually a Seiko watch has a better build quality than a Rolex. The Swiss have just been better at promoting their brands and protecting a European aura about watches.

I am a bit of an expert on watches and I would spend 5000 euros on a Seiko before I would spend it on a Rolex. However, I don't have 5000 euros to spare for a watch let alone would I spend it on one with the lips.

Id love to hear/understand how/why a Seiko is a better build than a Rolex. Does one actually keep better time, or last longer? different types of intenral components? What makes one more collectable than another?

I, personally, think that watch is beautiful.

I probably won't buy one, but it is really cool looking.

Seiko builds modern watch components internally that are more durable and last longer. A standard Rolex is, by design, hand built and fragile. The parts on a standard Rolex are more difficult to deal with and are often easily broken. The winding stem on a Rolex can be easily snapped by giving it a hard twist in the wrong direction. Most retail shops will charge 300 to 500 USD parts and labor. THe Seiko is tougher and the parts and service are less. So you get more for your money on an initial purchase because the Rolex will need more attention and money just to keep it working. And yes, Seiko watches do keep better time.

I'm just wondering how much better these high end watches keep time. It certainly seems worth it spending the extra.

Did anyone ever see the episode of "Northern Exposure" TV show [www.imdb.com] where the rich astronaut guy bought an ultra rare, expsensive, antique, hand made clock.... and he discovered that it didnt keep perfect time... and he was pissed... until...

The was a moral to that story.

More about the freaking watch:

The Rolling Stones were formed in April 1962 and are considered to be one of the
most successful groups of all time, with an estimated 200 million albums sold
worldwide. Seiko has paid tribute to the band with a special timepiece to
acknowledge their "great influence on society and culture".

It has a 45 mm stainless steel case and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with
anti-reflective coating. The black dial features the band's famous red tongue
logo, referred to as "one of the most visually dynamic logos in the world", and
part of the Union Jack flag. A golden star marks the 50 minute position to
reference the anniversary
, and the case back has an engraved "50th".
The watch comes with a black crocodile strap. Movement is mechanical Caliber 8L38.
