Jagger's Dancing?

I'm sure we will all agree that Jagger - in his prime, was the best rock n roll front man. His dancing whilst borrowwed from James Brown, Tina Turner and others, became very distinct and easily recognised as 'a Jagger dance'...The strutting chicken, the foot tapping, the learing etc - all really fluid and, well, Jaggeresque. But, when did he switch over to the stupid posturing which is nearer Cliff Richard than James Brown. He was at his best in 1972/73, but by the time he gets to Knebworth, it appears to have crept in by then.

It just does my head in, there is no obvious reason I can think of why he couldn't of continued as he was. Maybe you think different and like the weird posing and walking up and down the stage?

I love the way he moves all over the freaking stage in this clip. PLEASE RETRACT THE CLIFF RICHARD COMPARISON

Well, for one, as he aged he lost a lot of the fluidity that his early dancing was so famous for. Also, the stadium era had a lot to do with the transition to the continuous running that he did in his later years. It's hard to dance while you're running, but he gives it a good try.

I retract nothing! It's bloody true! I shall prove it!

Yes, I've read it all before - there was thread - Unwatchable Mick Jagger - check it out.
From your point of view where he is on his most stupid and weird - in 78 Live In Texas or 81 Hampton and LSTNT (without even asking about the 89 and after)
BTW, was it you who wrote that at 76 Paris show(your first Stones show) you watched only Keith?

I wonder, being Richards fan, does all the attention that Mick has right now slightly irritate you - hence the desire to bring on this important topic?

I like the way he moves on stage. Whether you should call it dancing...I don't know.

This one blew me away during my first Stones show in 1990.

Yes it was me Pm, but you must remember I was only 16 at the time and very much in awe of Keith. I also thought Jagger was amazing, it wasnt a case of one or the other, they both had brilliant stage presence... I love your psuedo psychology, but you are way off the mark. I was just wondering when the change happened and if possible why he opted to change.

This is way better than call Jagger's stage moves " the stupid posturing" or "the weird posing"

First off, I can't stand "leading the witness" opening posts on threads with moron comments like "I'm sure we all agree..." Pompous and tendentious.

Anyway, I saw the Stones on their last tour at their last Vegas show—that was a BRILLIANT concert—and more than once I thought, "If I didn't know who that was and didn't have a video screen showing me his close-up age, I'd maybe think he was a 14 year old gymnast, he's so G*d damned limber." His dancing was great on the last tour (to my tastes, anyway).

Dancing? Rather running and jumping like a @#$%& that really seriously damaged his singing....

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield...

Well, that's a bit harsh, Title5Take1 - It's not tendentious to state something that's NOT controversial - like Mick was an excellent dancer.

I do think it is the stadiums that are the main reason. The whole stadium rock thing kind of showed up gradually, so for us there wasn't one abrupt change. But for the bands there had to be quite an adjustment. (The delay in the sound carrying alone). In 78 and 81 they were doing stadiums already - yet Jagger was still the old Jagger to me.
So it is intersting to note that once they really mastered the technology: the video screens, the ramps, the PAs, the flames etc. that it was then Jagger redid his whole stage persona. I think he knows that in a stadiu7m it is all about exageration, and almost grotesque mimicry.
Lots of his act in 69 and 72 was based on subtle movements. It sounds silly to call Jagger with the belt 'subtle' but often Jagger in 72 would just stand at the mike. He could stand at the mike like no one else. But that is lost in a stadium.

Vocally I think Jagger still puts out well for his age. His dancing though seems far to premeditated and scripted. Too many dancing "lessons" and choreograph. 78 he was fantastic, punked out and a touch of English dandy.

Like this?

Great song, but some of Jaggers moves (particularly during the intro) are really dodgy....

Keith Richards black eye is pretty cool though!

I think you've hit the nail on the head...the size of the stadiums would necessitate more exaggeration, otherwise those at the back wouldn't see him doing anything other than on the screens which often seem to be slightly out of synch with the sound if you are way back in the stadium. It's a shame because when he moved like he did 68 - 75 he was something else to behold.

$20-dollar a word isn't bad actually. I've certainly paid up to $80 a word.

Hey - weird thing just happened. I was playing the video above - Start Me Up - and then clicked on the Leo Sayer's and both played. The Stones music cut in and out of "I think I can dance" it actually sounded pretty interesting.

LOL - trying to find an $80 word but I'm broke!smoking smiley

No one moves like Jagger, and I do admit to loving his moves in 1972, the chicken on acid, the pirouettes, the leaps and strutting...1975 he incorporated some karate moves, very fluid, cat-like, more stalking of the stage....by 1978 it was punk-city...Mick has changed it up from tour to tour, I believe , so that HE doesn't get bored! It's like wearing the same dress to a ball, you just don't do it, you change it!!

He certainly comes close to the edge of embarrassing, but somehow still pulls it off. He is Mick Jagger. Do not try to imitate without looking foolish. You will fail, he doesn't.

Everytime I've seen the Stones I can't help but watch Mick he is always entertaining and I'm always amazed at his energy even though the shows are choreographed he is still one hell of a performer.
