Never liked them much (white bourgeois boyz ripping off black artists and becoming millionaires) but this is shocking.

I never thought much of them until I saw them at Lalapolooza and then my whole opinion changed.

He's just about the same age I am, very sad to see him go so young.

RIP Adam.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Are you kidding? You could say the same thing about the Stones. The Beastie Boys were very good.

um...they were working class kids from NYC...AND in on the ground floor of hip-hop forming in 1979. They ripped NO ONE OFF! They are as responsible for bringing hip-hop/rap to the masses as any of the NY rappers in the late 70s/early 80s. You shouldnt make assumpsions like that just because they were white and suburban white kids liked them. The Beasties were and and continued to be inovators.

Shows what you know.

I'm not sure if they were working class or not (Ad-Rock is the son of playwright Israel Horovitz) but you cannot diminish their role role as innovators and popularizers. Regardless, their work is fun and funny. They are a generation after me, but I liked them and respected them and am very sad to hear this.

RIP MCA. Saw them in the 90's w/ Sonic Youth and L7 and then at Coachella in '03 and they were great both times. A friend of my wife's met MCA while travelling in India and had on idea who he was until she got home and saw his picture on the cover of a magazine. She said he was a really nice guy and she just knew him as Adam from N.Y.

Sad news.
RIP.

When he didn't show up to the Rock Hall Induction ceremony, there was a genuine sense of sadness.

(Unlike when two other, more prominently famous, guys decided not to show.)

A great group - for that is what they became later, in the true sense of the word. Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head were two highlights for me. RIP Adam.

No kidding! I was looking for intentional irony here, couldn't find it.

Anyways, I doubt many people here know or follow The Beastie Boys, but I sure did from 86 to about 92. Very sad news.

Very saddened by this. Just heard his speech read the other day at HOF induction.
The Beastie Boys were huge innovators - not just Hip Hop. Great musicians.
MCA was very active in Tibetan Human Rights. And no empty posturing either.

Gutted! Not only am I a huge fan of the Stones but the Beasties are up there with my favorite bands. MCA also came up with some of the best Beasties videos ever! I hope Mike D and Adrock soldier on and don't call it a day! Maybe they should do a Beastie Boys in the Park (Central Park) tribute.

I wasn't a fan of Beastie Boys but I am sorry to hear of his death. 47 is WAY too young.

Are there any American entertainers that support "Free Palestine" and giving Palestinians back their land? It's difficult to have much respect for celebrities who support the "Free Tibet" thing when it seems to be supported mostly for political reasons, rather than reasons of compassion or concern about human rights.

Wouldn't you say that in the case of Tibet that those two concerns are a single cause?

In most cases, I think these American Entertainers developed an interest in Tibet only after they developed an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, so for them, the welfare of Tibet is really more of a personal matter rather than a purely political issue.

If the biggest black Hip Hop artists of the day (Run DMC) accepted them and did a massive world tour with 'em, I think we can firmly say the Beasties were anything but bourgeois. As for ripping off black artists, their big hits off that first LP had the guitarist from SLAYER do the solos! And Run DMC was lifting samples of Rock albums (as were the BBs), so were Run DMC ripping off white artists?!

Sorry, but while I totally respect anyone's opinion on what music they like and don't like, misrepresenting history is something I can't respect. No kids who actually grew up with the BBs have never viewed them in that light, black or white. Maybe you read that in Rolling Stone.

I don't know the Beasties that well, just a little from listening to them with
my younger brother, but I was pretty locked into the Stones and reggae at the time.

Could y'all that know them better please post some more of their youtube things
that you think are good? Maybe with a word or two about what I should listen/watch
out for? thanks.
