Stop yer crabbing, everyone. Arcade Fire was sweet, and the Foos kicked energy into IORR that hasn't been there in years. The Beck tune was just an excuse for him to wail, nothing special about the lyrics.

For anyone who watches SNL, the finale of Rainbow/Ruby Tuesday was a great sendoff of one of the great women in the history of SNL. Kristen Wiig has been a phenomenal writer and performer on that show and helped resurrect it.

Foo Fighters actually played the proper iorr riff, not just the simplified Chuck Berry riff version we've seen the Stones do live so often. I liked that, and I really don't like the FFighters much. Arcade Fire did great with Mick. Mick did very well with the skits... Very smooth. His hair got messed up a lot with all the costume changes, etc... but it was a great SNL, I thought.

I totally loved it. I thought Mick was just incredible.

Mick in the game show "Secret Word". Too funny.

I'm watching it from the westcoast now, round two. I think i may have been a bit harsh on the comedy parts...they are ok. The music is far better though...thankfully heavily weighted to the music for this season finale.

No swing. I hate when rock bands play Stones songs. They sounded exactly as I thought they would.

Don't you love people who think they're hip because they say they haven't watched SNL in years? Anything the public likes they have to be against. Like their 'alternative' tastes are all that.

Mick of course has the "right" to do whatever the hell he wants, but I thought it spoke volumes that he goes on SNL a week after the Stones supposedly rehearse in the same city and sings a multitude of Stones songs with other bands, pretty much blurring the line between the Rolling Stones and Mick Jagger, imo. And to finish with everyone singing Ruby Tuesday, a song Keith wrote, was a bit weird.

The thing with Arcade Fire was at least slightly interesting musically. Foo Fighters bashed and rocked their way through their set, with absolutely no swing whatsoever. Dave Grohl's a nice enough guy, but why does he always have to look like he's trying too hard? At least they played IORR something like the original record, something the Stones themselves have never managed to do. The thing with Beck was a throwaway, something for Beck to guitar-wank to. I suppose that's some people's idea of what "blues" is.

To me, this show was confirmation that something is seriously amiss within the Rolling Stones. Whether that "something" is temporary or permanent is the question.

Just have to make a comment------these mega threads are ridiculous. I doubt anyone will ever see what I am writing on goddamn page 46. Not that I need to be widely read but it took a long time to write this and then when I hit POST it bounced to the front page of IORR because the smaller threads on how this show actually was------rather than weeks of speculation----apparently at that very moment were added to this.

Anyway....this is what I had written.

I am in California, and the show just ended.

I thought Mick was fantastic! He is in strong voice, he is very fit, was having fun, his dancing was awesome and not silly or over the top, at times he was just really good, and at other moments he sizzled.

These are the notes I took during the show that I email to a friend who doesn't have a TV-- a little rough but for those who can't see SNL maybe useful.

synopsis
Opening sketch feels extremely stale, like Steve Martin or Dan Ackroyd had something to do with the writing. Very old school. It was a spoof of the Lawrence Welk Show(?!), and the whole emphasis of the jokes was on horny Italians----which is a very Baby Boomer things to joke about----very post WWII, Germans and Italians do not have the same comedic resonance (of course) in America in 2012 than they might have had in 1979, so this sketch isjust corny and not funny---not relevant. Again, felt like written by writers who still think it's post WWII.

Monologue by Mick - unremarkable contentwise, but Mick looks very good, tho it looks like he might have stuffed his pants to counter the "TT" accusation The monologue didn't suck terribly and Mick tried to makes a few modern-flavor jokes that about 87% worked. For example, Mick says something like: "So, people are always asking me---when I'm on stage and I say 'How you doing?' and they yell and scream and I say 'I can't hear you'---'Can you really not hear us?' and I tell them 'Yeah, I can hear you. I just don't care how you're doing'."

2nd sketch----game show taking place in 1964, but it's SO off----more like 1968 or 1969. Mick playing a 1960s over-the-top stock "campy gay" character, like Charles Nelson Reilly, replete with ascot -- Mick just uttered a very funny line in a very stereotypically gay drawl with quite funny mannerisms and eye rolls: "Oooooh, you should see me by the pool I'm FULL of shenanigans!!" Other memorable and quote funny lines by Mick: "I am FULL of CRAZY secrets!!" and "They won't let me wear my bottom lashes in my films!" and "You're TERRIBLE, but I love it." Sketch closes with guy next to Mick on the game show dancing really badly and stiffly -- the most authentically 1966 thing about the sketch -- while Mick dances foppishly.


3rd sketch----a bar featuring karaoke of Rolling Stones songs. All people singing are trying to be Mick Jagger-----and the crowd is stupid and undiscerning. Mick plays a lonely loser nerd sort of guy with a "gay affect" again. He is the only one at the bar who knows that everyone is doing very lame impersonations of Mick Jagger. Everyone else thinks these karaoke singers and dancers are great. The singers/dancers her worse and worse, and people give them more and more kudos, and Mick's character is very dejected. Everyone thinks Mick's character is a lameass because he refuses to praise the horrible karaoke people, and so all the people with whom he went to the bar leave and tell him not to come with them because he is no fun. At the end Micks character, alone in the bar, sings a funny melancholy off-key version of "Satisfaction."


musical interlude #1: Mick+ Arcade Fire
The Blind Boys of Alabama(?) or some group of like 8 black men open the musical segment. They sing in a circle, a capella, under blue lights, and it is rather strange. Then Mick starts singing "Last Time" -- Arcade Fire backing him up. Win Butler looks like a giant, at 6'4" standing next to Mick. Win is playing electric 12 string ---- Regine is playing accordion, singing her piercing harmony. Mick dancing is not too over the top---he is in very good voice! Mick kisses Regine at the end. Win is clearly thrilled to be sharing this experience with Mick Jagger.


Sketch #4---TV show/competition featuring people who dance at summer jamband music festivals --- the concept is funny -- execution is very lame and thrown together. Mick plays Steven Tyler who is one of the judges of the show--he is pretty funny as Steven Tyler, but not hilarious. Mick DOES do a good job of impersonating him tho. Looks like him. In fact, Mick as Steven Tyler looks better and younger than Steven Tyler these days.


musical interlude #2: Foo Fighters + Mick
"19th Nervous Breakdown" --- Mick looks hip, and really pretty damn good. Singing is quite good. Dave sings harmony, wails away on guitar with spirit if not enormous musical charisma. Mick hits high notes very well. They segue Breaks into "It's Only Rock n Roll" -- Dave sings/screams high notes on "I know it's only rock n roll but I like it" refrain. Mick's singing is the best so far this night--- very fine. I don't 100% get from this performance that Mick LOVES the rock n roll he's singing about in the song---and he never gets down in that sort of darkly evil or gloweringly angry and defiant in this performance---which, to me, is the emotional temperature of this song---but he is adamant about something. His dancing here isn't at all silly. It's more restrained than it's been in recent years. And definitely fun to watch him move. Overall----good job!! Dave Grohl is clearly glad to play with Mick, and Mick at one point gets VERY charged up playing with Dave.


Sketch -- The Californians
Fred Armison is SPOT on in depicting a Californian. Mick plays someone named Timothy who runs the ferris wheel on Santa Monica Pier--character seems "gay" again, in a pink blazer and swishy ways, but he is supposedly marrying some chick and has fathered a whole bunch of kids. Really stupid sketch. Like the opening sketch this felt unbelievably stale, the points of reference are all like from the 1980s----made me wonder, once again, whether maybe Mick requested Dan Ackroyd or Steve Martin write for this episode of the show? because usually SNL gives you an idea of what people find funny NOW, and this sketch and the first one were so backdated ("Baby baby baby you're out of time..." )

musical interlude #3: Mick + Jeff Beck
I typed as fast as I can -- maybe missed some of the lyrics but believe this is mostly right. Mick says he just wrote this song about the upcoming presidential election. Not sure what he's trying to say. Jeff Beck kicked ass, of course.

Somewhat odd goodbye to Kristin Wiig, who is completely awesome -- Mick plays a commencement speaker who says Kristin is graduating SNL after 7 years. "She's A Rainbow" gets performed and sung by Arcade Fire ----not by Mick----with the whole cast and Lorne Michaels all dancing with her in turn [awful awkward and embarrassing] and then everyone in the cast and musical guests singing Ruby Tuesday.

Stones do not perform, but right at the very end of the show Keith walks on and plants a big kiss on Mick's cheek. They embrace, then walk off the set arm in arm to the delight of millions! I would take that over the Stones performing on tonight's show in a heartbeat. What is your dream ending for tonight's show?

You would rather see Keith kiss Mick than see the Stones perform?

If both Mick and Keith show up on the stage and whip out their todgers to thus show once and for all that Keith is the one with the tiny todger and wrote his book due to penis envy......
Honestly though I just want to see some good skits with Mick, like there have been each time he's ever been on the show and some great music, whether Mick solo with these other groups or Stones surprise. Doesn't matter to me. I see no reason to see why this would effect the Stones one way or another so I plan to enjoy whatever I get on the show. It's Mick @#$%& Jagger after all.....

My dream is that Mick does exactly what he's supposed to do, host and perform with the people noted and doesn't mention the Stones once. Then every loon that has posted page after page of nonsense the last two weeks will finally shut up.
