Jagger is the only one among the principals who has the ability and the inclination to make it happen (whatever that may be). He simply has to do it one way or the other and keep the dignity of the band intact. Jagger will, as you nicely stated, have to “orchestrate” it – because of and despite Keith.
Jagger hasn’t needed Richards for a long time – not for A Bigger Bang, not for Bridges, not for the re-issued Some Girls and not for the re-issued Exile. Lorne Michaels noted that the “timing was right” ..and why not.. ..it is 50 years of Mick Jagger – a marvel of professionalism and musicianship. There will be 60 years of Mick Jagger .. or more. Keith, on the other hand, is a retired non-functioning musician. He hasn’t made it to 50 years (yet) until he plays and proves that he can still play. But if Infamy didn’t inform people that Keith had absolutely nothing left in his tank, then nothing will. Time hasn’t been kind to Richards – musically he is done while Jagger and other contemporary luminaries continue to shine. LIFE and a lifetime of neglect seem to have piled up on him. I am saddened to see him in this state and am even more saddened to see the Stones unable to confidently get up on stage at a whim. Richards cuts a bitter and sorry figure these days but also doesn’t elicit too much sympathy. LIFE ensured that. Even if KR plays again, with LIFE, Keith wrote his final chapter. In his signature and self-destructive way - LIFE was a kiss-off – to the band and to music.
The presence of the Stones in NY city had us all intrigued for sure but I had a hard time believing, against hope, that the Stones would perform on live TV with Richards in his current state. Also, there were no Blondie sightings reported in NY city. SNL was always billed as a Mick Jagger event. I am amused by the folks on this board who still seem to think that the Stones will show up. There is little or no incentive for Jagger to be seen with Richards except for some photo-shoots, documentaries, and other “lovely things” that will mark the 50th.
I however don’t agree with the idea though that the Stones are completely done and will never perform again. For the sake of the 50th, and to save face, I believe that they will perform in some strange form. The SNL show might serve as a template for some 50th anniversary shows with other bands backing Jagger + some / all current/past Stones and paying some kind of tribute to the Stones. Keith can then even “sing” or do whatever he pleases in that setting.
Since 1985 (unbelievable that it has been ~ 25+ years now), Jagger has worked both in and outside the context of the Stones. Despite the absurdity of some of his outings, his best work is outside the context of the Stones. Jagger will go on – he will continue to disappoint, perplex and frustrate many as he did most recently with Superheavy. But Jagger will almost certainly also find a state of grace. He already has. The Grammy performance and the White House performance both point to that. If he chooses to play the blues or blues based rock, he will, as he has done since the 90’s, continue to depend on reliable guitarists who play the blues (not just talk about it) – Gary Moore, Jeff Beck , the Red Devils , Jimmy Rip… In this context, I thought it fascinating that Jeff Beck, in an interview last year told BBC 6 Music that he would still love to play with the Rolling Stones at some point. "Yeah, I would. I've just put my foot well into it, but I would, it would have to be a blues [number], or something that could show what I can do”
I can only hope that the White House gig and this SNL gig with Jagger prompts these two gents in that direction in the near future.
Rest assured, this Saturday’s SNL will be a lot of fun to watch.
Yes. It's really too bad Jagger won't take Wood, Wyman, Taylor and Watts for a few concerts. I'm sure it would be quite good.
If Keith can't really play anymore, and it sure looks that way, all that's left is for him to say "They're on their own". Very sad, but life goes on...
To be honest, the only ones that still shine are Ronnie and Charlie. Mick was very rusty at the White House-gig, and quickly went out of breath.
The Keith rehearsal footage (with James Cotton) was not great, but promising. Perhaps he will be sticking to open tuning and slide playing, I dunno...
And although the Costello-gig was a mess, I heard Keith play licks in there that he hasn't done in 15 years - so there is always hope.
+ of course the "sources" reporting that Keith is playing great in the studio...

Max from Stockholm, what does Life has to do with Keiths current status as a guitarplayer? That´s the issue here, maybe he will survive us all, but he can´t play anymore. I guess you don´t play guitar if you think so, to judge from the recent clips everyone here has seen he sucks bigtime and it´s very sad because i´m sure he is trying the best he can. But the head and fingers wont do the job well enough anymore.
actually, not quite impossible. apparently they set up this "VIP" room
each year at some hotel in cannes for the run of the festival. and do
bring in some reasonably big names, in previous years all hip-hop and dance
stars. which makes sense, its a disco for beautiful people. VERY expensive.
its nearly a private gig, so that could explain why it doesnt show up on
the websites of the stars. seems so unlikely for ronnie, but I can't declare
it absolutely impossible. wish i could.

Correct! I actually like this version of Spoonful. I'm not saying it's keiths finest hour though.
A hasty judgemnt, brother DP. Yeah, Jagger went out of breath during the first number in which he tried to much, was too excited, had too much adrenaline, or whatever, but he collected himself wonderfully for the next two numbers. Maybe it was good to get rid of that too much energy/showmnaship, and then concentrate solely on music, which he did. "Commit A Crime" is among his very best blues rock readings of recent decades, and his voice has the spark I have missed so much. Probably a competent guitarist sparring him there had something to do there too. The interpretation of "Miss You" is one of his most musical, inspired and high-tuned performances of that mother of all war horses numbers. In these two songs Mick put the shownanship to a degree aside and let the music do the the talking. That what most impressed me.
Rusty? Hell no! That man never gets to stage if he is rusty.

No, it's not hasty. I really didn't like Miss You, but the blues number was alright - but nothing more than that.
That tells me that I'm unsure about how Mick will cope with uptempo rockers and fast numbers...

Unfortunately he will manage that easily, as he did during A BIGGER BANG: miming singing/shouting - especially the SHINE A LIGHT opener ("Jumpin' Jack Flash"
is a good example of that 'technique'. I am more impressed when he actually tries to put some feeling and point to his singing as he did in Obama's party.
But of course, I am not looking for a just another Cohlian spectacle, 2 and a half-hour peter pan show of the last decades - if that is a measure for a non-rusty Mick Jagger - but something musically more interesting. That blues session gave me some signs of that, like some other his latest doings, such as "Plundered My Soul". I think Jagger is still surprisingly competent, especially if he lets his musical heart to be seen behind his tough, autopilot-like through the motions showmanship.
It could be that Jagger cannot do a 2 and half hour Jagger show any longer - but from the base we know we don't know either can, for example, Charlie Watts manage to play the drums comptetently that long either, even though he plays a nice hour jazz set with his own band. That's something to do with stamina with those two men reaching 70. But with Richards I am afraid can he perform at all, or is it all just an "old blues man on the chair" show now.
I think there is only one actually weak link in the band. I am afraid is not just the case of "rustiness" any longer here. That dilemma will not be solved on May the 19th...

well it's almost Wednesday and at least Mick hasn't mentioned anything about Superheavy coming on SNL...so we can take that as a positive sign that that project is deader than dead.....we can only hope.

It's weird to think about their normal crew not there but what exactly couldn't the crew at the rehearsal space not be able to handle that they couldn't do it themselves? They use the amps that are at the rehearsal space...Keith/Ronnie bring in their guitars or also use the axes that are available to them. Don Was comes along and fills in on the bass on a couple blues tunes. Keith may not know the songs like the back of his hand but it's not exaclty rocket science to play along to "Tallahassie Lassie" or who knows whatever song they played.
One of the main reasons for these "rehearsals" is the filming of the documentary, just like it was in December(I know that Gazza's source told they didn't film, but Rolling Stone said the opposite and I believe them more)
Well regardless if they filmed it or not...they DID meet. Mathijs is still stuck on the fact that they never met and this is some kind of master conspiracy. I just don't see what value they have in all coming together and lying. For what benefit? For the fan boys on this forum? What good has it done to say they came together to rehearse? Nothing. It only fueled endless speculation--that Mick does NOT want put on him. If I recall correctly, it was RS magazine that got the scoop directly from Keith that they were meeting in London to jam. No where else was it mentioned. Then Mick later mentioned how it went. To suggest that all this was false and never happened...I just don't see the point in any of them wasting their time in doing so....
I never said they didn't meet. Sure they met in December in London, there's sufficient proof of that. But to my mind there was no session at all for the reasons I have given. The crew wasn't there as far as I know, and without them they really can't play properly. No one of the backing band was there. Reportedly, Jagger came the third day and didn't stay too long. So what do we have -Watts has stated various times he would not go on a tour anymore, only maybe some special gigs. Richards whom has proven he is a totally retired guitarist and musician, and the vaults have opened, something Jagger wasn't keen on as long the band was still touring.
To my mind, there's two possibilities: Jagger told the band he calls it quits, but wants to cash in, or they decided to do gigs (not a tour) in 2013, and that everybody has four months to get in shape, which unfortunately I do not see happening with Richards.

As a huge Keith defender, I am worried he may be done. But to say he was done on Bigger bang or Bridges is ludicrous. I actually went to many of those shows, and I will give Mick credit for always delivering, (as does Charlie) but Keith being on, was the difference between another vegas show or another great Stones concert. Of the 15 shows I saw Keith was on 10 of them (the five off were all post head injury) and the three best shows were when Keith was on top of his game. Grooving hard and blowing off Micks cues to let him sing again. The Stones and Mick Jagger are always good, but never Great without Keith bringing his game.

Bollox, Life was a refreshing read with the discovery of Charlie's proneness to migraine being the biggest discovery.
Jagger took it like man, for sure, and Keith ain't done. Keith will survive us all (and I'm only 29) so stop slagging him off.

and the grand opening superstar is Diddy!
but apparently that's a secret because its not on Diddy's facebook or twitter pages!
whats great about the ronnie show is that it is so special they are even keeping
it secret from his co-stars "the cirque du soir"! not on their website!
so obviously, gig of the decade! start camping in line now!
hope i don't get in trouble for telling this secret: not on cyndi's website
either! i think this adds up to only one thing: its a new barbarins gig!

Max from Stockholm, what does Life has to do with Keiths current status as a guitarplayer? That´s the issue here, maybe he will survive us all, but he can´t play anymore. I guess you don´t play guitar if you think so, to judge from the recent clips everyone here has seen he sucks bigtime and it´s very sad because i´m sure he is trying the best he can. But the head and fingers wont do the job well enough anymore.

"Commit A Crime" is among his very best blues rock readings of recent decades, and his voice has the spark I have missed so much. The interpretation of "Miss You" is one of his most musical, inspired and high-tuned performances of that mother of all war horses numbers. In these two songs Mick put the shownanship to a degree aside and let the music do the the talking. That what most impressed me.
Rusty? Hell no! That man never gets to stage if he is rusty.

No, it's not hasty. I really didn't like Miss You, but the blues number was alright - but nothing more than that.
That tells me that I'm unsure about how Mick will cope with uptempo rockers and fast numbers...
We'll find out on May 19th

Unfortunately he will manage that easily, as he did during A BIGGER BANG: miming singing/shouting - especially the SHINE A LIGHT opener ("Jumpin' Jack Flash"
is a good example of that 'technique'. I am more impressed when he actually tries to put some feeling and point to his singing as he did in Obama's party.But of course, I am not looking for a just another Cohlian spectacle, 2 and a half-hour peter pan show of the last decades - if that is a measure for a non-rusty Mick Jagger - but something musically more interesting. That blues session gave me some signs of that, like some other his latest doings, such as "Plundered My Soul". I think Jagger is still surprisingly competent, especially if he lets his musical heart to be seen behind his tough, autopilot-like through the motions showmanship.
It could be that Jagger cannot do a 2 and half hour Jagger show any longer - but from the base we know we don't know either can, for example, Charlie Watts manage to play the drums comptetently that long either, even though he plays a nice hour jazz set with his own band. That's something to do with stamina with those two men reaching 70. But with Richards I am afraid can he perform at all, or is it all just an "old blues man on the chair" show now.
I think there is only one actually weak link in the band. I am afraid is not just the case of "rustiness" any longer here. That dilemma will not be solved on May the 19th...
