GOOD PRICES ON LET IT BLEED BOOK
Posted by: stonesrule ()

I had lunch with an LA friend of the Stones today, and he was telling me that Ethan Russell's big book on the 1969 tour culminating in the horror of Altamont is now available at bargain prices at Amazon or www.abebooks.com.

Thought many of you who hesitated at the original price might like to know this.
This weighty book is as close up and personal re The Stones as possible. You feel like you're there...and, of course, Ethan has some fab photos, to say the least.

To me, this books shows Keith as he truly was at his most Keith. A year later he began to decline.

yes but from what i can see ruleeee that is the cheaper coffee-table
version not the massive super-deluxe that you need a fork-lift to move it around ....

True, it's not the supra-deluxe version, but it is still good -- no, better than good: it's a fantastic book. I own 2 copies, it's that good smiling smiley Ethan isn't only a wonderful photographer he's a really good writer and, naturally since he was touring with the Stones, you'll read things here you won't anywhere else.

The copy he showed me was approximately 230 pages hardcover and heavy. He bought this one at abe for approximately $15 including shipping within US.

Just googled Amazon UK They have the same book for 16 British pounds.

Rockie, will say that it's loaded with photos but many of them strike me as difficult to reproduce. My impression is that he had to use all sorts of technology on his 1969 negs.

I whizzed through the book when it came out and what impressed me was the text. Real people saying real things. Very Stonesy.

Definitely - that's what I meant by "Ethan isn't only a wonderful photographer he's a really good writer and, naturally since he was touring with the Stones, you'll read things here you won't anywhere else." smiling smiley

It is a beautiful book, at least the "forklift" version. It cost a lot but is worth every penny. I bought my copy the day the book came out many years ago (2006?).

I would like to get the smaller size and see how it compares. If it is anything close to the forklift version, $15 is a huge bargain.

If I had been loaded I would have bought the "forklist" version and thrown in another copy for Rockman. Definitely a major piece of rock history.

I think it's GREAT that you got it misterfrias. I believe it came with a print or two?

I think you'll enjoy the smaller size while it's still around at a great price.

It brought back a lot of happy memories especially the boys being in town and the LA Forum masterpiece. Talk about peace, love and harmony...such an appreciative thrilled audience. Know Bluzdude would agree that it was a highlight of living in LA at just the right time.

Tragic what happened at Altamont. I remember just hurrying through that part. Too heartbreaking.

I was of town that weekend. But I was around for an early discussion and I had misgivings about Sam Cutler's lack of experience (although I certainly felt sorry for him when it all came down) and somewhat dubious about Rock Scully. I felt the Stones were being pushed into something that needed more thought and preparation...Still, I was just a chick and what did I know? I'd been at Hyde Park in July and it was a peaceful, happy gathering, if not particularly distinguished musically.

I "share" this only because it's an important part of music history..and I get so pissed off at how history is frequently distorted and fantasized.

Ethan's book is a very honorable account.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered it at Amazon through one of their seller's for $5.46. There are still a couple left if anyone wants one - it's not brand-new but it's supposed to be in good condition.

BTW I bought the Babara Charone Keith book the same way - that wasn't in great condition but it was almost impossible to find anywhere else.

It's a great book, and it is true: what sets Ethan Russell apart from other photographers is his writing. No question. However, despite the book being porn for Stones fans, I was slightly disappointed in it, but only because his previous effort, Dear Mr. Fantasy, was SO much more interesting and insightful re: the Stones content. The Stones chapters in that book are fantastically written and interesting. The written effort in Let it Bleed is, well...how to say this... The whole book, from title to anachronistic cover photo, struck me as a bit of a cash-in and money grab. But hey, good for Ethan for cashing in. I'm happy to support someone who is that talented.

I bought this via Amazon last week. Great book by the way and very good value. Photos were excellent with many I had never seen before. Written content well put together with some nice reflections from people who were there. One of the nicer books about the Stones I have bought in a while. Highly recommended.

I have the forklift version and have the seen its cheaper cousin. As I recall the deluxe version has more pics than the bargain version.

Actually, stonesrule, there is the "expensive forklift book" and a "more expensive forklift book with print." I purchased the former.

At one time Ethan Russell was giving small prints along with the less expensive version. He started giving those away after I purchased my copy. I emailed Mr. Russell and he generously gave me a small print of Mick Jagger in his Uncle Sam hat.

I wish it wasn't so expensive so that more fans could afford to buy a copy.

Glad you got the print from Ethan. I knew him only a bit but he always seemed a nice guy. Several of the rock photogs as they got "access" and big bucks in the early 70's on were soon not nice guys at all. "Staritis" set in.
