Been on amazon looking for forty licks. Some say remastered version available. Can this be right? This was a limited edition but was it re released in polished form?

Possibly the greatest album the Stones ever made.

a great sampler, but missing too many essential toons and heavily edited versions of others and the 4 unfortunate 'lesser licks'.

Great introduction to the stones though.

Forty Licks was remasters - the 1994 remasters and the 2002 ABKCO remasters.

Taking almost 90 seconds off iorr is a travesty

To date, it's the only career-spanning compilation they've released. I have a few minor quibbles with it, but in my opinion, there is no better introduction. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with for the next Best-Of. My prediction is more of the same, though with 50 tracks spread over 3 discs.

Forty Licks has some silly editing, so if somebody would like to get into the Stones I would recommend other samplers.

For the 60's the best compilation is Rolled Gold + as released in 2007.

A truly excellent compilation. 40 Licks is great though. Highly flawed, yes - but a fine introduction to the Stones for new fans, and a treat for a few people at least as far as the new songs were concerned. I could take them or leave them, but I am sure some people out there loved a couple of them and far be it from me to disabuse anyone else's joy in music.

Misguided for sure, about those four new tunes.

Those 4 tunes are highly out of place on an album compilation of greatest Stones licks. 3 of the 4 are un-listenable, Don't Stop is decent enough though.

And as pointed out by a few, the edits are terrible - but I guess for a newbie it is a decent introduction overall.

I see that. There's a 2002 Remastered and a 2005 Remastered version. The 2005 version is like $6 cheaper, but only available from non-Amazon sellers so you can't get free shipping, so it just about evens out.

I don't think there's a specific 2005 remastered version. Forty Licks has the "remastered" label because it's made of tracks remastered in 1993 for the post 1971 part and of tracks remastered in 2002 for the Abkco part. Bob Ludwig did both '93 and '02 remasters.
As it wasn't part of the UMG reissue program in 2009, it's now most likely out of print. Hence the high prices for an all new item. Better to buy a second hand...

Forty Licks is not the quintessential introduction complitation. Not by a long shot.

That title belongs to Hot Rocks.

Hot Rocks was the best intro to the Stones a young lad like me could have back in 1972. It had all the essential hits and also great album tracks. It gave you an entre into all their phases up until that point, so say if you liked "Get Off My Cloud" you could go pick up that album, if you liked "Sympathy" it would make you want to get Beggars Banquet. I lived with that record through adolescence and it might have even saved my life in a way. Best compilation ever done, imo.

I still have my cassette of Hot Rocks. I remember dimming the CD version as I figured I would be able to afford a packet of smokes if I opted for the former. I must've worn that cassette out. It's a damn fine introduction to the Stones most creative and relevant phase.

Interestingly, just got this from amazon.co.uk via email:

It's the 'deluxe' box...a bit of a ripoff considering what your getting but if you happen to be in love with 40 licks, this might be for you!

It is out of print. UMe could elect to reissue it but they're probably exhausted after reissuing Jump Back.

Of course what's funnier is that when Virgin finally reissued Made In The Shade and Sucking In The Seventies those had been remastered. They were a tiny bit louder than Licks and all the 1994 reissues.

When I was growing up, Hot Rocks was the only Stones music me and my buddies had on cassette. Everything else was LPs. So we played the hell out of it in the car when we were out prowling the town. In those days, you could drink while driving without worrying about losing your license. 40 years later, I still get the urge to drink when listening to the Stones.

Of course Jump Back and Forty Licks have the same edit version of Miss You, Fool To Cry and Mixed Emotions. But some of the other same songs are edited on FL.

Actually, I don't own Hot Rocks yet eye popping smiley

Probably the only thing, together with Flowers, I don't have.

Why is HR better or more quintessential than Singles Collection/The London Years?

Probably the sequencing. The Singles Collection is broken up with B-sides etc while Hot Rocks, although not technically chronological, has the mean songs on one side etc...it has an actual flow to it.

I think consideration needs to be given for the quadruple album (double CD, I think) Rolled Gold+ released a couple of years ago. While I'll always love my Hot Rocks, the Rolled Gold+ collection is staggering.

I think Hot Rocks is the reason you always hear the Ya-Ya's version of Midnight Rambler on the radio instead of the studio version. At least everywhere I've lived that's been the case. They never play any other Ya-Ya's tracks, so I'm guessing they probably have Hot Rocks. Which is the reason that most people I know (who are casual fans) have never heard the studio version until I play it for them. Not that it's a bad thing, it's a great version, and thanks to Hot Rocks the one that most people are familiar with.
