Hypothetical question: If you had been in the Stones' inner circle.....
Posted by: Bliss ()

....how would you have ended up?

Like Gram - Mick Taylor - Marianne - Anita - Bianca - Stanley Booth - Jimmy Miller - Spanish Tony....?

Knowing what you do about the Stones milieu, and your own nature, how do you think it would have gone for you?

I think it's important to have your own position in the group, some kind of function like a lawyer, accountant, manager or whatever.
Then you have your own thing and a healthy distance to the group. And gets some respect too. It's the hangers-on who suffers badly and looses their dignity on the way.
I think...

Some questions are more hypothetical than others. And this one is very hypothetical.

Me? Allen Klein, maybe...

Is Stu considered "inner circle" since he's not the "original five?"

That's how I would like to be remembered.

No one was more "inner circle" than Ian Stewart, that darling man.

Interesting answers, but I don't think my question was clear enough...if you could have inserted yourself somehow into the Stones' milieu, what would your path have been? Obviously it would be your own, but what form would it have taken?

Write some fan fiction, with yourself as the star.....friend, lover, colleague, arch rival, servant, groupie...whatever rôle you think you would have taken.

Would you have succumbed to heroin addiction? Ended up mysteriously dead in the middle of nowhere? Gotten out, but spent the next 10 years trying to recover from the experience? Used the time as a launching pad to becoming rich and famous yourself?

I still say I would like to be like Stu.

Keep a level head, stay out of trouble, have a bit of fun along the way.

Only thing I would change is that I would still be around to see the 50th. RIP Stu.

Interesting question. I'm sure most of us have pondered what it would've been like to be an "insider."
I would've liked to have been a writer. Someone who was as close to them as Stanley. Honestly, I'm sure I would've fallen into the same addiction trap. I'd like to think I would've been strong enough to get out of it and move on with my life. The one thing missing from Stanley's life at that time, which I think might've made it easier for him to withdraw or more aptly immerse into reality, was true love. He describes his wife then (can't recall her name) but for whatever reason, it wasn't enough to rescue him. Perhaps you have to have religion or true love to save you from yourself...or at least get you through those late nights with Keith at the Plaza.smoking smiley

I could see myself as Annie Leibovitz, very much around for a while, immersed, with a role, getting out and
recovering, and then returning to less intensive yet rewarding aspects of my job.

Jenn Wenner told her not to go on the tour, but I doubt she regretted doing it, in the long run. I wouldn't, though
I wouldn't mind skipping the addiction and the rehab.

Miss Anita/Rocky, are you ready for your shot?

I'd have left as soon as I could, all those people that Capote described in that interview about the 72' tour, those hangers on fighting to see who's closer to the Stones sound pathetic.

I would have liked to be Prince Rupert! An essential part of the inner circle but independent due to his aristocratic credentials, manners and connections. He could never be treated disrespectfully by any of them, and he would have enjoyed the strange new milieu he was in, enjoyed sorting out their problems, and enjoyed all the money he made.

Failing that, I would have liked to be Marshall Chess - for awhile. According to Greenfield, he was universally loved by all the Stones, and was close to both Anita and Bianca. He had a great, great time with the RS. But as I said, only for awhile, because he ended up strung out on heroin, and had to break free of the RS to get clean.

Of the women - doubtful. Maybe Carla Bruni when she first hooked up with Mick in '94, when he was just 40. But as exciting as it might have been - two highly intelligent, attractive, artistic people enjoying the thrill of an illicit affair in the most luxurious settings - the sleaziness of sloping off with another woman's husband would have gotten to me.

It could have been contentious. I have a sense of street smarts going back to sometimes remaining staight while my a-hole friends partied too hard and too openly, thereby attracting the cops, which I wanted none of. I might have partied with the Stones for a while and then decided it wasn't working for me any more. This could have caused conflicts, as certain members of the band seemed to ostracize those who didn't do the same drugs, or amounts, as they did. (See Bill Wyman). I'm sure I would have been as disgusted with Brian not being able to get it together as the others were.

I definitely wouldn't have been Keith's H-buddy. I don't have that inclination or endurance. I think I would have pulled out of the circle if I felt it endangered my life. I would have loved the easy sex and 'some' good drugs for a while. And meeting some very interesting people would be addictive. For a while. Someone like Papa John Phillips would have interesting at first, but might have disgusted me as time went on.

Prince Rupert was..is a true gentleman, easy to talk to...not a stuffed shirt.

Good reply 24FPS! Ya gotta know who you yourself are before you can understand anyone else. I think we probably all have had friends-- famous or not -- who were dangerous to themselves and others.

Very difficult and sad to walk away but sometimes it has to be done.
