There's some nice ears in that pic, Keith isn't the most stand out either.

all seem to be very very happy... some laughing and giggling out loud
You dont really see that in most staged, group pictures like this, even these days.... good for them.

Well all except Mick, he seems a bit out of place, almost scared. Probably because it was a tough lot back then and if he was small he probably got his ass whooped plenty of times. Never really heard him talk about that like Keith does though. Only in that recent interview post from 1983 where he was asked if they teased him about his lips. peace

I love also how "jolly" so many of the kids are.

hmmm...Mick certainly isn't beaming, but you never know, right? he could be peeved because they didn't let him stand with everyone else, and he and those other 2 dufus guys are off to the side. I wouldn't reckon Mick would have liked to have been marginalized even then.

Also, not sure about the ass-whooping theory - that school wasn't for kids from a "tough lot." It was fairly gentile. And Mick was good at sports from the get-go--and his dad was the gym master at the same school, so doubtful kids could give him a hard time and get away with it. In any case, I doubt Mick would have tended to have been picked on. Even Keith wasn't given a hard time until age 12 or so when the other boys sprouted up ad Keith lagged behind.

Wow, Mick is true to himself. He is the only kid on the photo who sullenly stares into the camera, not smiling. That's the beginning of the Stones photo story - surly,slightly angry, not smiling and not ready to be nice

I wonder how many times this photo has been shown in family gatherings, etc. "hey, here is the school picture of granny/dad/aunt/uncle/whoever, and take a look at these dudes here... you know them?"..

Too bloody right! We were hardy in those days. I didn't get to wear long trousers until I went to secondary school aged eleven.

Swiss, Micks father was the PE Teacher at Dartford Grammer. This picture dates from their primary school days. Keith attended the same school then, but attended the local technical school after he left here.

And the classrooms were freezing in the winter.

And the school milk used to be given out FROZEN because it had been outside all morning - pointless.
