Pandora vs. Mog.com

Everyone is familiar these days with Pandora, but I would recommend you try a new music service, Mog.com.

Pandora streams at 128 and 192 bps depending if you are a paid subsciber. You also can't pick a particular song to play , and you certainly can't listen to a favorite song twice in a row on Pandora. Instead, P will try to "predict" what you want to hear. . with mixed results.

Mog is at 320bps, much better for all music but especially classical, jazz and yes even the Stones. You choose the songs you want to hear, but mog will give you a list of related music, so it doesn't get boring. You can also play albums from start to finish, if that's what you like.

As far as I can tell, mog is free for now, but they do have music plans for $5 to $10 a month. I listen to classical so can no longer listen to Pandora. . the selections are pedestrian, and the sound quality poor. Give it a try if you've never heard of it before.

Neither of them are available outside the US.

I think there is a service called Spotify.com in Europe. Haven't tried it but it has gotten some good reviews.

Thanks, mitch. I listen to Pandora everyday. Usually jazz. It's OK but not great. A lot of repetition and if I don't stay on top of the program and "thumbs down" certain songs, the channel seems to go off on tangents - adding big band selections to my jazz/Coltrane station and so forth. I'll check out MOG. Thanks for the tip!

For those not in the U.S. there is a way to get a special vpn service that gives you access to Mog, Pandora, and Netflix, if you are so inclined. The service does cost about $58 a year, but it might be worth it if you want Netflix or a good music service.

I absolutely love Spotify. It's free, the ads are minimal and un-annoying, and you can listen to albums or whatever you want. Make big crazy playlists, etc. Send them to friends. I love it. Right now I'm totally happy with the free version, but in the future I might pay for the mobile access... if I get a smart phone some day.
