"A Season in Hell" to be made into Hollywood drama!
Posted by: superrevvy ()
Date: April 22, 2012 03:28

EXCLUSIVE: The Rolling Stones and Richard Branson are teaming up again.
Having released three Stones albums back in the 1990s on Virgin Records,
Branson’s Virgin Produced has now acquired the rights to Robert Greenfield’s
2008 book Exile on Main Street: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones.
Unlike past looks at this time in the Stones career, this film is a drama not
a documentary. Like the book, the film will focus on the professional and
personal relationship between head Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as
the band record their classic Exile on Main Street album in the south of
France in the summer of 1971.

i wonder if they'll hire stonesrule as a consultant, to make sure they do it right.

I can't believe that tripe is being made into a film. On the other hand, it should be a hoot to see how they try to do it. smoking smiley

It reads as over dramatic and totally rushed. A book dedicated to this era/time frame deserved so much better than what Greenfield shat out.

It should have been much more in depth and thought out. No music was discussed.

Plus, much of this book seems to be Greenfield arguing against Tony Sanchez' book using interviews with Tommy Webber as proof. When in fact Tony's recollections were probably much more accurate.

Also, Greenfield had the balls to call out other authors for so called mistakes in their stones books only to have a few blatant ones of his own in this book.

anything does it contribute to our understanding of mick and keith,
since thats supposedly what the film is gonna be about?

I thought it was "Season in Hell" from Eddie and the Cruisers...lol
Greenfield's book is crap, very disappointed. His first is my favorite Stones book of all time....

Why this book is so bad?
For starters, it snipes at other writers (completely nasty to Tony Sanchez - not that I'm a fan of his - still the mudslinging was uncalled for). The images Greenfield renders are watered-down. You feel like you're hearing third-hand accounts of what happened from someone who knew someone who looked through a key-hole. Plus he gets several facts wrong. Simple things such as saying Jumpin' Jack Flash was on Sticky Fingers and that Woodstock took place a year and a half before Altamont. And the big problem is that nothing does really happen in this book - there's no climax...it just drones on with hearsay.

I guess the biggest disappointment was that this was such a let down from Greenfield's STP - which I thought was excellent.

I hope the actors playing Mick and Keith will be better than the ones in that terrible Brian Jones movie.

The thing I remember most about "A Season In Hell" was the claim that Mick Taylor was leaving notes around saying "I don't want to be a Rolling Stone".

yes, Greenfiel read somewhere about Taylor having a penchant for too many notes and got it all wrong as usual

If Hollywood get their hands on it, consider it a waste of time like 99% of what hollywood churn out. Let's hope it's a UK film company. I can see it now, CGI action scenes of Keith driving his car and boat around the South Of France, set against a romantic backdrop of Mich and Bianca...oh dear!

I thought the cribbled notes thing was in Wyman's Rolling With the Stones.

As for A Season In Hell, I don't praise it, but it wasn't terrible either.

I enjoyed Freejack. David Johansen was great. The ending blew but up till then really enjoyed the ride.

Greenfield's book is crap, of course, but the story itself is asking for a big screen. It has everything - the unity of time and space, real passions, a spirit of the times and of course the strong characters. And the conflict that develops on a personal and creative levels. If they want to make a decent movie they have a lot of material, and the book can serve as a basis for a narrative.
I have a couple of thoughts about the actors. Ezra Miller is ideal for Jagger - he is handsome, can sing and a terrific actor (check him in we must talk about Kevin). However he is only 20 years old...

Ben Whishaw is perfect Keith

The notes from Mick T on the floor are definitely from messes Wymans book and must be honored as true. Reading that always hurts me terribly!
Greenfield wasn’t at Nelcote and pieced his book together from secondhand accounts so it pales in comparison to 72 STP a tour he was lucky enough to be a part of.

Actually, Greenfield WAS at Nellcote for a week or so in the late Spring to conduct the epic Keith interview for that August RS issue. Apparently he had to ask Marshall Chess to intervene so that Keith would finish the interview as it was done in segments and Keith was blowing him off.

That being said, the majority of Greenfield's lame excuse for a book was still all based on second and third hand accounts...

This actor looks like a great pick as Jagger...and as I suggested in another thread, perhaps Russel Brand might be an OK choice for Keith. The film would have to better than the book...I think...I hope...I pray.smoking smiley

You're right. The more I think about it, the more I can envision this as a really good independent kind of movie. It could start with the move from England and end with the escape from Nelcote in November of '71. The setting/environment could be beautiful and there is plenty of drug-addled drama to be had, as long as it's not over-dramatized and affected. The interiors of Nelcote would be fairly easy to recreate and I suppose a lot of outdoor scenes could be filmed in reallife Villefrenche Sur Mer. If done with real artistic taste, there wouldn't have to be any embellishments to the actual story.

Of course, many of us cherish the mystique of the whole Exile period and a bad movie could be painful to watch.

Ezra Miller is quite good. Young for this film but a really good idea to play Mick.
