To expand of what Gravity Boy said, Gimme Shelter and Sympathy For the Devil were not the kind of singles being played on radio in the late 60s.

Released October 1969. Peaked at #12.

Billboard chart for January 31, 1970 has Whole Lotta Love at #4. There would have been room on top 40 radio for Shelter and Sympathy. They would have been hits, but it was by not releasing killer cuts like those as singles that forced people to shell out for the albums.

I think Lennon's 'Instant Karma' was a bigger hit. And he didn't have much of a choice anyway. He didn't record, or release a solo album while the Beatles were still in existence. Cold Turkey's only outlet was a single. Early 70 did have a hard rock edge on the singles charts, but that began to fade as late 70 ushered in James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Carol King.

When first discovering the Stone I presumed that Under My Thumb - being such a well-known track - was a single. I was quite surprised to realise it wasn't.

This one certainly comes to mind. Not a huge hit, but it made it to #21.

Regarding the track listing order on the LIB cover, the designer has said he did it based on how it the song titles looked set out together.

thanks HM. that's sure a stupid way to design cover art! but it's good to know

Think there was something about it being called Automatic Changer and in the middle of it it changed to Let It Bleed, hence it being a record player etc?

... yeah - but that's not connected with the tracks being listed in the wrong order, is it?
unkempt quoting can be so confusing! :E

Ha ha. I don't know. It wouldn't surprise me if it was. I always found the cover to be fascinating. It's just beyond whack. And then to find out it had origianlly a different title and seeing that it resembles a bunch of stacked records it started to make sense that it was done for that title instead of Let It Bleed.

What the hell made them change it to Let It Bleed? What was that rant from Lennon that was factually wrong? That must've been it! They must've found out that in 1980 he'd be on a piss rant about it. They pre-imitated The Beatles just for the sake of it!

May have had something to do with the fact that the hottest-selling bootleg in the fall of 1969 was the Beatles unreleased Get Back album, which included the song "Let It Be"

A true single can be described as a single containing two songs not found on any studio album. The @#$%& up thing with american decca albums is that they contain songs from singles like for example 'Between the Buttons' that had no single-songs on it. tongue sticking out smiley

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield...

and don't forget that that title change combined with the delay in the release (which meant the album came out the day before Altamont)
made it really really hard to defend the band against parents shrieking about deliberate human sacrifice as a publicity stunt

i bet there are still people who believe that.

i love the Rolling Stones
