I'm not doubting what you're saying, but how do you know this?
I've read and/or seem very little regarding the song writing for thins album so would love to know of any articles or interviews related to this.

All I've heard regarding the song writing for this album is that Mick and Keith worked closer together on these writing sessions than they had in many years.

Isn't there something in Shine A Light that shows Keith playing the riff?

"Struggle" is a great riff. Watching Keith live chopping away at that one was awesome. It put me in mind of minor key thread too: its a strong minor key song; and it also made me realize how similar it is to "Terrifying".
Naturalust mentions the Winos, and is right on. Seems like either Keith saved some of his latter day prime riffs for his solo band, or maybe within the Stones some of his riff based songs lose that very edge, once Jagger gets through with them. And I don't mean that negatively. Jagger seems to like more structure.

Which was the last Stones song you can think of, that had that recognizable riff that just by hearing the guitar you just knew it was The Rolling Stones?
For me, it was "Start me Up"....and is over 30 years old, damn....

They WOULD say that. They're hardly going to say the opposite, lets face it, Almost all the songs on ABB are primarily Mick Jagger songs with a bit of 'filling' from Keith. As subsequent interviews have more or less proven.

Is it Keith to the Right, or is it Ronnie? Hard to tell I Think, but I would guess Keith and Ronnie doing the slide parts?

On She Saw Me Coming, that is Mick on bass, Charlie, Keith and me, cut live. We should do more like that, like in the Faces' days where we would just take off - eyes down, meet you at the end.

Yeah but the negative thing for the Stones is obviously that the two songwriters , while competing for solo record acolates, would likely choose to give the second tier songs to the Stones and keep the "I told you so" gems for themselves. It just hit me that this is why they haven't been as up to par on the last few records.

Someone should do a hypothetical where the best songs from the Winos and the Jagger solo records were given to the Stones to churn out. Keith dirtying up some of the She's the Boss songs and Mick arranging and vocalizing on the best of the Winos songs.

As a matter of fact it's not too late for them to do EXACTLY that for the next Stones record. I'd love to see that actually, what a goldmine of song opportunities. They still split the writers credits only separately this time. lol

I'm sure they haven't listened to each other's records enough to be overly influenced. It's like the old days again. Did I hear MT enter the room? peace

You are welcome to your opinion of course. but I think it's a great riff- Love the false start. love the lyrics too. Seriously. they are sly, sexy and self referencing. I would take them any day over shite like, say Blinded by Rainbows or Sweet NeoCon

Rough Justice

Rough Justice ? A mediocre song in the first place, which then suffers the further indignity of being COMPLETELY and utterly ruined by the most awful lyrics ever penned ........... I mean what the f**k is the story with the first verse for example ? Ridiculous and thoroughly horrible !

One time you were my baby chicken
Now you've grown into a fox
Once upon a time I was your little rooster
But am I just one of your cocks

It's rough justice on ya
You're going to have to trust me
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

So put your lips to my hips, baby
And tell me what's on your mind
I know you've still got the animal attraction for me
It's been a long, long time

It's rough justice on ya
We never thought it risky
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

You're feeling loose and lusty
So if you really want me
Yeah, it's rough justice
And you know I'll never break your heart...Yeah

It's rough justice on ya
You think you really sussed me
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

The first time I saw you, baby
You were springing like a young gazelle
And next thing I know, way down the road
You had me flying like a bat out of hell

It's rough justice on ya
Your eyes are too disgusted
You're going to have to trust me
But you know I'll never break your heart

I give you my positions
Don't want no oppositions
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

Yeah
Come on baby Woo..

She Saw Me Coming has a great Keith-riff. Too bad they didn´t play it on the ABB-tour, after having rehearsed it several times...

Start Me Up? The mother of all riffs, but honestly there are douzins of great Keith-riffs after that:

- Mixed Emotions
- Terrifying (love that one!)
- Almost Hear You Sigh (due to the production it is buried a bit in the mix)
- Slipping Away
- Love Is Strong
- You Got Me Rocking
- Moon Is Up
- Flip The Switch
- Low Down
- Too Tight
- She Saw Me Coming
- This Place Is Empty

Not to forget all the great riffs with the Winos:
- Take It So Hard
- How I Wish
- Struggle
- 999
- Wicked As It Seems
- Eileen

Hmm...we have different definitions of "great". I would call most of those "good".

Also different definitions of what a riff is.

Several of his Winos riffs are GREAT imho, although mostly great within the context of what the band is playing, stand-alone great ala Stones CYHMK intro ..it's been a while. Start Me Up never did a thing for me, too contrived or something. I would have probably preferred it as a reaggae song. Hey welcome back Tele. London good to ya? peace

Thanks. London was great. Going back in a few weeks. Manchester and Liverpool too this time.

Well I'm not going to argue the point about this particular song Paulie, but in Mick's defense, you know it is completely unfair to take lyrics out of the context of the song and evaluate them as poetry. This is Rock and Roll after all. peace

Rough Justice is just another autobiographical song by Mick about one of his affairs, with a play on words using animals.

the best song on the album, and it came to keith in a dream just like satisfaction

very exile-ish

lyrics are great too. a very direct message to the hardcore from Mick
that the Stones were going to be roughing up the hardcore fan on
this tour, not favoring them like on Licks. A++

I always thought the Rough Justice lyrics were basically Keith feelings in his relationship with Mick and written with a a bit of "Little Red Rooster" tribute, but you guys would know better.

Here's an old one from about 5 yrs ago.........

Keith’s intro jumped started straight from the ole devil’s Cadillac, fiddlin’ scratchin’ arcin' tryin’ to get a connection...Then WHAMO!! Ignition as Charlie pours a half gallon of BOOM BOOM juice straight down the throat of the carbie…Micky Jagger jumps behind the wheel, flips the digits of his age to 16 and careers down the road ah screamin’ & yellin' out the window like a crazed kid....But you know I’ll never break yourrrr heartttttttt....while Mr Ronnie’s crouched in the back AK assault weapon slide covering their every move...

I would say "Flip the Switch." But, "Highwire" is a great riff based number. It like some many others was a demo they dig out for the two new songs on "FlashPoint." Other then "Rough Justice," the Riffs are Mick's on ABB. Keith plays them live, yes. But, they are Mick's. Like "Don't Stop." Mick has done a number of great Riffs. "Sway" "Stop Breaking Down" "Winter" Most of "Some Girls." "High Roller" the song he did with Leslie West. He did have a great teacher. Keith was at the ABB sessions but, as he has admitted he only showed up with 3 songs. If they do another album I hope the 5 of them RECORD together. By 5 I am including Bill.

Undercover of The Night...better riff(?) than Start Me Up.....could someone define what a riff is...notes or chords...

Re: Last Stones song with a great Keith Riff...
Posted by: Doxa ()

Damn difficult question... many ways to look at "great riffs" (and yeah, starting probably by a proper defination...)

But I think the greatness of Keith's riffs is to be measured on the songs they inspire to be written out of them. A great riff without a great song around it is... not a great riff me thinks (only 'potentially great riff, like "I'm Going Down" which never actually formed a classic piece for wahtaever reason). I think Keith Richards might also think the way I do here: he sees riffs only meaningful in the context of songs. We shouldn't seperate them.

For that reason I think "Start Me Up" might the last great HUGE Keith Richards riff, even though he has written good riffs since that for sure. But when we start throwing in things like "Dangerous Beauty" or "Take It so Hard" or "You Got Me Rocking" I think we should keep in mind what this guy was once able to do... I think we should keep the semantics of "greatness" in some reasonable level in order to include things like "Satisfaction", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Gimme Shelter", "Tumblin Dice", etc in it...
