ah, but I love listening to Muddy's slide.

I gotta say: I don't get it.
Sounds very amateurish to me. Nothing great about it

But I do love that version of the song.

I admit he's no Duane Allman, but I still enjoy his slide playing, maybe because I'm about at Muddy's level of slide playing...if even.

There's a DVD-Audio version listed on Amazon.co.uk

Is that an error?

Muddy is no virtuoso but what he doesn't have in technical verocity he has in a lot of feeling. Those simple note scome off the gutiar with ease because of the rather slow, relaxed attack, his specific sound with just a touch of overdrive for a more crunchy sound and a more "authentic" slice of genuine slide playing. It's refereshing to hear what slide guitar could have sounded like to the many guitar players sitting outside their porch in a small town in Mississippi. Modest and now show-offy like many of the guitar virtuoso's of the 60's and 70's eventually took over...turning it over to a more ROCK (and roll) sound rather than blues.

Oh and Lefty Dizz is one...interesting...player. Using a right-handed strung guitar as a lefty? Hmm...definitely has that kitch value but some of those notes are a little flat and sharp by the weird way he bends the strings because of how he chooses to play it. He's a great showman but can't give much props for the guitar playing!

I. HATE. LEFTY. DIZZ.

The man is a complete hack. His 'me too' performance is just pitiful. "Someone bring me my guitar!" Yeah, cause everyone's itching for you to play buddy. "We're gonna do like we did in Europe!" Lizzy was ONLY well received in Europe. The man can't play guitar. He can bang on it like a 5 year old, but he can barely hit a nice note.

Lefty Lizzy prettymuch ruined most of the performance for me. Once he comes on stage everything takes a nose dive. Keith and Ronnie are no longer smiling, every blues jam turns into a big mess... It just stops being fun until the last few songs. Dizz sucks. He takes over the show and just drags the whole thing down..

I agree with most of this. He did come off with that "hey what about me" attitude but I did enjoy the very relaxed feel of this show, much like any normal blues jam on any Friday night in Chicago during this time period. I like how the event wasn't "cleaned up" or better organized just because they were filming. It's a loose vibe and adds to the genuine feel of the show.
Still though, as a player, he's very sloppy and seems to care about the attention more than the actual music.

Keith and Ronnie's guitars seem barely audible on the CD. I am a little disappointed.

WHAT????

I agree about the Lefty Dizz-stuff. He is taking WAY too much space.

Both Mick, Keith and Ronnie did a splendid job, imo.

Muddy was the king, and Buddy Guy´s guitar became out of tune after 30 seconds, unfortunately.

The mix is fantastic, and the footage quality was beyond my expectations.

All in all a great show!

yes, totally agree. When I saw it, I thought, wow, now I know what Muddy is about!

What?
That's reprehensible. He's with one of his boyhood idols. Give him a break...
Keith is wasted though....was that a bottle of Rebel Yell passed his way or Jack?

DP- I haven't had a chance yet to see the DVD but have listened to the CD a couple times. I don't disagree about Keith and Ronnie's playing only that they are so far back in the mix you can BARELY hear them. Its almost as if they aren't on the tracks. Maybe limitations of the tape and remastering/mixing? I just wanted to hear them. I am sure they played great.

Go Dawgs!

Just read Buddy's new book - which is really great.
He mentioned that when he opened the Checkerboard, everyone thought he would do gangbusters what with all of his famous friends playing there - but he had to tour just to keep the place open.

Then he mentioned that when he finally got the Sones there for this show, they closed down the bar to the public. Closed off the entire block, and filled the bar with Stones crew, friends etc and the cash register never rung once the entire night lol

there are dozens of high-quality muddy shows that circulate widely - legitimate ones and bootlegs. for those enamored of this one, i implore you to seek some of these out - they run from the late fifties until his death. many of them are equisite and feature far better sideman than muddy had at this late date. THIS checkerboard show ranks at or near the bottom of all the muddy shows i've heard...

There is an online vinyl retailer called Soundstage Direct that is taking pre-orders for two-LP + DVD versions of Checkerboard Lounge, and Live in Texas '78 for release on September 11. Anybody know anything about these? A straight transfer of the digital masters? Any thoughts or insight? Thanks.
