I beg to differ. He was popular circa 1972/73 when Jerry Wexler produced Shotgun Willie, and Phases & Stages. He was selling out 04th July picnics and was also beginning to appeal to the rock crowd. He certainly had Leon Russell's support at the time, and Leon Russell was huge 1972/73.
1975, true, was when he became a mega seller with Red Headed Stranger (Sony should reissue this as a 2cd set), and he became absolutely stratospheric with Stardust in 1978. My favourite album of that time is Sings Kristofferson though, closely followed by the Willie & Family Live.
