I always loved this scene from "Don't Look Back". Donovan sings sort of an imitation Dylan song, then Dylan grabs the guitar and shows him how it's done.

I feel bad for Donovan whenever I watch that scene. At the end of Dylan's performance Donovan says, very dejectedly, that he once knew a girl named baby blue. But nobody cares. You can see it in his eyes.

It's worth noting that Donovan asked Dylan to sing that song.

Yep. I always thought it was a friendly competition. Dylan clearly liked Donovan, even though Donovan was a Dylan wannabe in those early days. But I think Dylan appreciated his talent and genuinely liked the guy.

Dylan cannot withhold his smile as he shows up Donovan. It is almost cruel. No flowers or hillsides for Bob. He springs a new biting and dark masterpiece on the room's listeners. It is an acoustic guitar, but it's hardly folk. He was the coolest man on the planet and he knew it.

Although still a bit of a Dylan clone, Donovan was being himself there... sweet, heartfelt and respectful and I think he endears himself to Dylan in the process.

He only sings that song because Donovan asked him to.

Never has the difference between talent and genius been so vividly illustrated.

Thinking about that movie (I have not watched it in a while), isn't there a joke about Donovan running through it? As I recall Alan Price (??) speaks highly of Donovan to Dylan. Dylan says (jokingly, of course) "I don't like the guy already." But I think Donovan's name comes up once or twice like "Where's Donovan?" or something like that. It is all playful until that scene when it all takes on a different context. I am not sure if this has to more to do with Dylan or the film maker. I doubt anyone could have anticipated that scathing scene.

The average poem in any issue of THE PARIS REVIEW is better than any lyric Bob Dylan ever wrote...or any rock lyric for that matter. Because a lyric gets attached to a melody it gets a massively higher profile...and thus gets overrated. Mick Jagger recently said that he looked up to Bob Dylan for his lyrics in the 1960's but (paraphrase from memory) "looking back, Dylan probably wasn't as good as he was made out to be." Mick is better read these days and thus a better judge of creative writing now versus then.

Sure, but I'd like to see the average Paris Review poet write the music to go along with their poems, and then perform their songs as compellingly as Dylan.

It is hard to judge the quality of anything without having a context. Dylan turned popular music on its ear. No one was writing songs like that. Those lyrics were coming fast and furious out of his brain as if they were skipping the conscious part and coming directly from where dreams come from. He was obscure, angry and witty. What did one reviewer say in '65? It wasn't a concert so much as a sermon. But about what? After the motorcycle crash Dylan said even he could no longer write like Dylan. He had to re-learn how to write a song. His muse was exhausted. But by then he had influenced everyone.

Anyone know when the Royal Albert Hall show from last year is coming out on DVD? It was a stunner.

I have all of Donovan's albums, on vinyl, naturally, and really liked him at the time. Now his work makes me cringe, because it has not stood the test of time, in my opinion, and his lyrics sound pretentious and corny.

One thing about the RS : their music holds up so well. If you heard anything from 68-72, or many, many other things from different periods, for the first time - now, in 2012 - you would think they were amazing.

I have always thought that 'Cosmic Wheels' from 1973 were Donovans last studio album, but do you know what? He has recorded 13 more albums between 1973-2010 and I think I haven't heard one single song from any of them confused smiley and I'm supposed to be a Donovan-fan...

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield...
