I would say that Duff has put it behind him more than anybody. Have you read his book?

Great story about running into Axl on tour with his other band when they were staying at the same hotel for different reasons. The hotel desk put their rooms right next to each other thinking Duff was still in the band.

Good read

Coulda/shoulda/woulda been a contender. Shame the band couldn't get along. Appetite is a great rock record. Some good songs on some of the other albums too. I think Izzy is great.

After we finished with Steven yesterday, we were talking about what he should say should get the mic - he didn't know kiss or rush were not in the hall so he said. "f--- it, that's what i'm going to talk about" - could be interesting

Having read the entire letter I thought Axl was actually quite reasonable.

Thats what I thought too... although it would have been more interesting bashing on him if he had actually blown a fuse and starting ranting.... I give him crdit and his due, he hired some great copy writers. It is a good letter.

Here's from yesterday - some video in here of me talking with Adler - i think the primary bad blood is between Axl and Steven - and man - by not showing up, Axl sorta own the night - he stole the show, for better or worse

Aah, some true rock and roll spirit there as well! thumbs up No matter how much I loathe Kiss musically, more I loathe the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame their snobbish double-standards. Kiss is one of the best selling American rock and roll bands ever and they have written quite an original page of their own in the business. One can despise all that show business/mask crap and the lack of artistic value (what? in pop? its damn subjective in any case) but the Kiss Army knows better than no one that "it is only rock and roll but I like it".

I sometimes think that maybe Kiss is too real rock and roll band to get the hall. They represent too explicitly the shallow nature of the whole genre; they are too honest in what they do, and the people who want to have more edifying picture of the whole thing, don't want to admit that.

Yeah, too much real rock and roll spirit in that group to put into wax museum... Maybe they actually were the last great rock and roll band after all... Nowadays any indie punk band dies for getting Grammys or whatever awards and recognition from the business...

I'm not a fan of Motley Crue's music, but their autobiography THE DIRT is irresistibly amusing. And in one section is described the nature of the "rock stardom machine" where, if a musician makes the jump from this "cog" to that cog, to the "big cog," he becomes a superstar: "The big cog is the cog that Guns N' Roses got caught on with 'Appetite for Destruction'...The big cog is a huge grinding gear, and there's nothing artists can do about it if it picks them up. They can stand and scream, `I hate everyone in the world and you all suck, and if you buy a single record of mine I'll kill you.' And all that will happen is more people will run out and buy their records. Trying to get off the cog is futile: It only makes the process hurt more...The big cog is exciting but overwhelming...Most get worn down by the big cog. They are knocked off by the crusher and either dropped to a lower cog, to the platform where they wait to return to the conveyor belt, or into the abyss below. Some—Like Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin—get smashed completely by the crusher. And, in one sense, they win. The only way to beat The Machine is to die, because that's the only way out of the game. When you win and make it to the big cog, you ultimately lose. There is no way to go but down, and it's a painful drop no matter what.

"Those who survive are not the same after the fall. They experience post-cog stress disorder in which, like Axl Rose, they fool themselves into thinking they are still in the big cog."

How about the concept that Jann Wenner inducted himself in this supposed hall of fame while continuing to ignore so many REAL(people who actually play rock and roll) deserving artists... the whole thing is a sham/joke.
[rockhall.com]

And allow me to add, back in the day, when they first invented this concept, and built the hall... I was ecstaic, I thought it was awesome.... but after time went by, it became obvious that the whole thing is a nothing but Rolling Stone Magazine charade... it is not, even remotley, a real rock and roll hall of fame.... it is a joke.

Oddly, Slash feels the same way. Here is what he said in the Toronto Globe:

... "It's sort of a bittersweet thing too because there's so many artists that aren't inducted, that came way before Guns did, that really actually almost deserve more to be in there and they're not in there, the guitarist said in an interview Wednesday, listing off Canadian band Rush, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick and Kiss as examples. "So it's really hard to sort of feel victorious ... that to me just doesn't seem right." ...

The fact that Guns 'N Roses got in so early and the Small Faces had to wait 22 years after first being eligible in 1990 is a crime.

Steve Marriott was a force of nature, and the thought of all those lesser talents entering the hall before him makes me sick.

The Hall's doubling up of the Small Faces with the Faces is perhaps the biggest joke of all. Nobody--I mean NOBODY-- ever viewed them as anything other than two distinct bands.

Faces should have been inducted as well, a long time ago. Because the best work Rod and Ron ever did was in that band. But when they joined Lane, McLagan and Jones after Marriott left, it wasn't like Van Halen or any other group that carried on with a new vocalist. The Faces became a whole different thing, and didn't perform Small Faces material in concert.

The HoF screwed up royal by not inducting them when Steve and Ronnie Lane were alive. Putting the two bands in as a two-fer is a disrespectful and ignorant move, really a sad comb-over of the HoF's tawdry bald spot of a f*ck-up.

It really really is, but the good news is, it appears that word is spreading and maybe people that might be able to help change how it works are starting to realize it is broken and they are speaking up. Until they admit there is a problem, nothing can be fixed.

I've always thought G'n'R, in its myriad of disguises, was never more than a poor man's Aerosmith.
Whenever I think of Axl A s s hole, which is almost never, I think of the brown eye I sit on.

I can't help but think this is a backhanded bit of PR for his new lineup, knowing there's no chance
in Hell that original group will ever reconvene, so the best chance of lifting the new generation
is to bury the old. Quite convenient use of "The Hall", not that it's not been done before.

I can commend him on one thing: He did say, "Please", when asking to be shown the door out.

"Why are whipping your hand about?"

"There's a frickin' mosquito in the room!" [Slaps at cheek]

"I don't see a mosquito."

"I don't either, but I can hear it. That high whiiiney sound. I can't stand it!"

"That's not a mosquito. That's the radio. It's Axl Rose singing."

also whats with the previous poster calling out crosby, stills and nash? the have a long standing history in rock n roll.

(I understand about the 25 year deal, but thats why the hall is struggling. They have these rules that made sense when founded but now that most of the big names have already been inducted, its going to be slim pickings for a while.)

Crosby Stills & Nash are folk, not "Rock N Roll".
Abba is disco pop, not "Rock N Roll".

I could go on and on and on... So many artists are popular/influential/good at what they do, but are not "Rock N Roll". The hall either needs to be renamed, or the criteria drastically altered.

I prefectly understand Axl's move. Like it or not, its the Appetite/UYI GnR band that everybody wants under the spotlights, not the current version. But for Axel, the one that counts is the present line up. The old one is history.

The HOF thing is quite a joke.

C
Then change the name and don't tour under it because you know what thats gonna bring about in people. They were given such a great chance to put it all behind them. Really its only Axl that still has to deal with it. The rest have moved on quite a bit, especially Slash. I understand the argument about not wanting to reassociate with people you hate, but by saying you understand and want to honor fan support then do exactly what everyone expected? Its just really really annoying.

Hard to say who is right without knowing the facts. I once read something from Axl to the effect that he was not only the legitimate owner of the name, he actually was a big part of what GnR was. He might even be right!

C

axl, izzy and tracii guns were the original owners of the name GNN. in the late 80's tracii sold his share to axl. axl then split that and gave part of that to duff and slash. when izzy left the band in the early 90's he sold his share to axl. slash and duff at some point both sold their part back to axl so he is the full owner of the name. axl always owned at least 50% of the name even back in the 80's

CSN should be in there. they had plenty of rock songs in their catalog you just have to go find them. why is bob dylan in the HOF then since he was a folk artist? the definition of rock changes.

anyways there are plenty of bands not in yet who have been around 25+ years.
grand funk railroad
rush
kiss
stevie ray vaughan
deep purple
YES
jethro tull
motley crue
def leppard
journey

just to name a few

The rock n' roll HOF is bunch of bs. The whole idea of it is anti rock n' roll. That being said, the museum is cool. They should have just built a museum and forgot about inductions.

One should not institutionalize popular music. Rose is right not to go to the Hall of Fame. For the Stones the inauguration was a good way of getting into the public again, but the whole thing is meaningless.

It wasn't really unexpected, isn't it. Axl to date is seclusive and generally avoids being in public outside the stage. And he really believes he is touring with a fabulous band, you can't expect him to accept the honours and in a way admit that all his fame and fortune is based on that version of the band.

I agree, its not that unexpected. And as a fan, I really tried not to get my hopes up because I knew it would go wrong. But when he said several times "I don't know what this award means to me, but it means alot to the fans", I took that as he at least knows it means something to people and maybe for ONE time he shouldn't be a total dick. And I guess he's refusing with class and good points. But in the end, all that really matters is he's refusing, and nothing with Axl has changed in 20 years.

The power struggle in Guns N' Rose just shifted last night...
Slash took back the band, in the name of the fans.

In my humble opinion, Axl will never recover from his absence.
No news here, just my little blog...

Not accepting an induction to the hall is not reasonable. It is a way of saying thank you to him for his work. If he can't accept a thank you, there is something wrong with him mentally.
