OT: BOSS BR-80 8 track recorder - Amazing
Posted by: GravityBoy ()

Guys and gals, this is an amazing piece of kit.

The size of two mobile phones, 8 playback tracks, 64 tracks for multi-takes and bouncing.

Built in COSM guitar effects. Built in mic (a good one), hundreds of drum patterns, eband function for pitch change and tempo for playback of your MP3s. Great practice tool.

It's magic.

I did this today.

I think I got close to Keith's sound - it's the "Early UK Blues" effect using my Fender Mex Tele.

The solo is a Gibson Melody Maker.

The bass is actually my telecaster with the "Guitar to Bass" effect.

The guitar is standard tuning by the way not open G.

Yes I picked the drums, set the tempo, you can mix all kind of patterns. There are three different drum kits to choose from as well.

There are two inputs. 1/4" jack and the mini jack (headphone size). You can put a guitar, bass or mic into the 1/4" jack (there is a guitar/mic switch to get levels correct). There is an input level control as well.

Headphone out.

Slot for SD data card up to 32 GB.

About £200.

What kind of beer are those fine people drinking?
Is that a ham coming out of the kitchen?

It's rolling stones beer.

The ham is Ronnie.

Sorry I don't know the Zoom one.

I had a Tascam Guitar and Bass trainer (pitch and temp changer, MP3 player )which cost nearly 75% of what this cost.

There is no comparision, the BOSS is the perfect guitarist tool, it's easily worth the few quid over the Tascam.

It has track edit functions as well so you can copy, cut and paste bits of tracks. It's a bit fiddly but it can be done.

Punch in/out.

A/B Looper.

Runs on batteries, USB power or 9V mains adapter.

I had an old version of this machine.

I am embarassed to admit I never was able to understand how to use it properly. The only truly great function was the A-B repeat. Wonderful to learn how to play "off the record".

100% replaced by ipad + garageband now.

Yeah, I considered that but the Boss fits in your pocket.

I still might go that route in the future.

Thank you for the tip on the BR-80.

btw- New players should really pay attention here, recording yourself is a great learning tool.

I love this machine!!

I did this track from start to finish in an hour yesterday.

I picked a drum rhythm and was messing with some 7th and 9th chords and went with a JJF groove (all on my sofa while watching Liverpool v Everton FA cup semifinal on the TV).

Three guitar tracks all my Telecaster, I love the guitar to bass patch - it means I don't have to go get my Fender bass. Everything here was the BOSS BR-80 and my telecaster, the vocal was the Boss built in mic.

Jumpin Jack Flash with a difference.

That's really impressive Gravity...I've got a Jam MAn still in its box from two Xmas;s ago, but I'm not sure it could do something like this. I might sell it and invest in one of those.

The Boss stuff is pretty good. I used to have a Boss BR8 (released in 2000) which has similar guitar processing effects etc. Currently I use a MacBook + Logic Pro, but recently I discovered the GarageBand app for the i.phone

Good work mate...that thing is amazing, think I might have to invest in one or trade my jam man in and upgrade at least. I think you are fairly near to me and was wondering if you knew of any bands in our area who I could contact regarding getting back into playing electric guitar. I've not really played the Tele for many years and seem to just play acoustic.

Hi crumbling_mice, thanks!

Although I occasionally (and reluctantly) play bass in a local covers band (who might have played their last gig) for weddings and functions - I don't know the local scene at all.

I don't know how old you are but you should get back to the electric, if I had all the resources available to me now when I was a kid I would have been Jimmy Page :-)

I'm too old now but I still enjoy playing.

I'm probably too old too (50) but thought I might re-launch the old electric!

Built in COSM guitar effects. Built in mic (a good one), hundreds of drum patterns, eband function for pitch change and tempo for playback of your MP3s.

So, to make it simple, in your opinion, would this be a good recording device to replace my 4-track cassette recorder for recording demos?

Absolutely 100% yes.

It's not as simple as a Portastudio. obviously, but if you can operate something like a i-Phone with any competence and don't mind reading a manual to get up to speed it's worth it.

This is about a zillion times better than a 4 track cassette recorder (been there done that).

OK. Great. Thanks for the info! That is specifically what I was hoping to learn and you answered my question, having worked on a 4-track for years at home. I've been wondering for a while about what to get and it's difficult to learn these things for some reason. Pro Tools is way out of my league financially. Something simple and transportable is more like it. This looks and sounds to be the thing to get. Thank you for the tip!
