Who is it that calls out "Let it rock!" at the head of the song?

It sounds like Keef. the clip says Marquee Club at the beginning, I believe this is from Leeds though.

I always thought the guy yells "Paint it Black". Like on YaYas "Pain it Black , you devils".

Listen closely and, yes, he yells "Paint It Black". It is from Leeds and I think it's just someone in the audience.

Huh! "Paint It Black!" Right you are. I never realized that and I've heard it many times.

It's definitely 'Paint it Black' being shouted by someone in the audience.

Presumably he's no relation to the girl who shouted for it on Ya-Ya's!

100%, Chris.

Think of it logically.

If its March 1971 and you're at a Rolling Stones show in a university in England, why would you be shouting a request for a Chuck Berry song that the band had never recorded and which (in all likelihood) you had no idea they'd ever played live?

And I'll bet you about 80% of the audience in 1978 never heard of Let It Rock either.

Probably not, Tom. The Leeds 71 version was only released in the UK as part of the 'Brown sugar' maxi-single.

Maybe a few had bought a Chuck Berry compilation by then, though!

How in the world could one get "Paint It Black" outta that?????

I still don't own that maxi-single "Brown Sugar/ Let it Rock". Was it released world wide? It is still pretty scarce isn't it? Someone mentioned they re-released it for record store's day (or whatever it is called, we don't have it here in Sweden).

Yes, this is from Leeds. My version of "Get Your Leeds Lungs Out" has two consecutive cuts of this song, the second is stereo. In the many, many times I have listened to this, I have never thought the guy in the audience was doing anything but calling for "Paint it Black".

I think the original suggestion was that it might be one of the band shouting 'Let It Rock' rather than a member of the audience....

It's actually Bill shouting "Paint It Black!" but no one paid him any attention.

That is not Keith's voice.

Your hearing has been damaged from decades of listening to music like this.

Wow, this is just freaky!

When I listen to this and have the words "Let it Rock" in my head, as if that's what I'm expecting him to say, I clearly hear "Let it rock."

When I listen and have the words "Paint it black" in my head, as if that's what I'm expecting him to say, I clearly hear "Paint it black."

I've done this now about 10 times each way, and I hear it clearly both ways depending on whether I'm listening for confirmation of LIR or PIB.

It's like a brain teaser, or something.

I don't doubt when considering the historical "evidence and context" that it's probably PIB, but I DO hear Let it Rock also when listening for that.

I never thought it was one of the five - I imahined maybe stu, one of the horn players, the bruseels guy (and now ladies and gentleman...that's joke) but it just times too perfectly to me to be a crowd member-it feels like someone connected - and sounds like let it rock - ya yas was new then-i doubt that catcalling paint it black had become a thing

I've always heard "Let It Rock" and assumed it came from someone onstage. Why, after all these years, did you people have to have my start questioning this? It's like being told "I buried Paul" was really "Cranberry Sauce".
