bartender from the Horseshoe (Toronto) reminisces about meeting Keith

Any famous run ins?

Well, my other favourite story is from when the Rolling Stones played here, which was 1997 I think. They had gotten here hours before or something and at one point Kenny, the owner at the time who still has a small stake in the place, tells me to bring this case of water downstairs to the office.

So I go walking into the room and put the thing of water down and look up and there's Ron Wood and his wife and Keith Richards is laying there on the sofa. And so the one thing that I always did know from working here, when you're the staff you need to give people distance. But I mean, if I was on the other side of the bar I'd freak out, so I'm thinking, man I gotta get out of here and then I just think "shit, it's Keith Richards, what the @#$%&!"

So I just kind of walk over, and I love Ronnie Wood but I mean, that's Satan — it's Jerry Lee, it's Santa Claus all rolled into one — it's Keith Richards laying there on the sofa. So I turned around and just stuck my hand out and went: "I know you've probably heard this a million times before but thanks for, whatever, however long it was at that point, for 40 years of great music, whatever blah blah blah."

And so he takes my hand to shake it — and it felt like a paper bag full of string — and he just starts talking and I can't understand a single thing he's saying and I'm all in the moment thinking how great this is and I excuse myself and close the door and walk upstairs and think, man I just met Keith Richards. How great is that? I just had a conversation with him, wow... what did he say? I have no idea.

"I can't understand a single thing he's saying"

Well that seals it for me. This guy did meet Keith!

Just shake their hand and walk out ?

I'd probably hang around until I got kicked out.

I love this story! This is great.

Have to laugh, the Horseshoe was my first bar & my first night of being "over-served." I was EXTREMELY underage & went with my best friend and her much older brother. Acting like the ever-cool, hip 14 year-old that I saw myself as, I ordered a stinger...and another...and a third. Went outside and fell into a snowbank...threw up all night. God - those were the days!smoking smiley

I'm in Toronto next week...I'm going to see if I have time to stop by the Horeshoe. I notice it's on Queen at Spadina.

Cool - I haven't been there since that fateful night in 1976 but I've heard they've cleaned the bathroom! Cheers winking smiley

Thanks, it's a bit far from where I'll be downtown, but I think I may be able to meander over there!

I was really disappointed with the bars I encountered during my recent Toronto jaunt. It was all freezing cold lager and overpriced Guinness and NBA and Ice Hockey on the screens - come on, guys, where was the Premier League football?

I don't think I'd want to go to this bar unless I could have a drink & conversation with SomeTorontoGirl. smileys with beer

To Gumboot Cloggeroo - were you there the night the Stones played? I was!!!!! We arrived at about 3pm and the place was fairly empty. Soon, mostly media types arrived (Blue Rodeo, too!) and then MANY fans arrived.

There was a long line-up around the Horseshoe Tavern on Queen Street and some fans got to see the Stones leaving by the alley-way in their cars.

It was a great night to be sure. The one thing I hated was being LOCKED IN!! Once the place was filled to capacity, the bodyguards locked all doors. A tad claustrophobic, for me!smiling bouncing smiley

The place holds (legally) 270 people. It was packed at 400 the night the Stones played. I didn't even think of the fire marshall. The bodyguards would let you out, but then one couldn't get back in!smoking smiley

I was lucky enough to get out at about 4pm to grab some food in the little restaurant next door. Then......locked in!tongue sticking out smiley

Nope, I wasn't there. I watched them on tv during the live broadcast from the MTV Awards that night. But lucky you!

While you're at it walk 10 minutes north on Spadina and check out The El Mocambo. But I'll say the Horseshoe is much better place to have a drink. Cheap beer specials in the day, a little patio on Queen St. and tons of great photos on the walls inside. I've seen so many awesome shows there. (Not that one though, I lost faith that I could make it in but if I had just hung on a few more minutes..., ugh, it still pains me)

And, stop by 'Stones Place' on Queen Street near Lansdowne. It's owned by Jerry Stone - a friend of Keith, Bernard and Blondie!!

Enjoy!grinning smiley
