Satisfaction 1969 Madison Square Garden

This has to be one of the most perfect rock and roll songs. Yup, Klein was a scumbag, but the ABKCO GYYAO box set has a wonderfully remastered version of Satisfaction. Quite probably the best version ever recorded. The mix on the DVD, and the film quality is stellar. The Stones are blazing hot. Mick dances, shimmies, throbs, and s i n g s. He is more sedentary, and entrapped in a vocal plea for Satisfaction. The crowd jumps in a mass trance. Mesmerizing is the core riff of Satisfaction that Richards seems to weave throughout the song. And watching Janis partying, smoking a big doobie, and shimmering in lust for Jagger's skinny silken ass. The camera shots to a row of teens dancing in unison on their seats. Kees bent in syncronicity with Charlie's bass drum. Taylor's leads are locked in tight with Keith's riffing. Blues scales riding a wave until they slow down in unison and Keith hits primeval slabs of rhythm until Charlie cues the band to push it harder.
After watching this song ten times in a row I want the entire show released! COME ON! you know they have it. Just release the entire show.

Yes, 69 is the best version of Satisfaction.

True. It's never been played as good or as interesting or as smoking hot as the '69 tour version.

The 1967 European Tour version which emerged from a groovin' Going Home jam was better! grinning smiley

In December of 2007, Albert Maysles held a benefit for his foundation. It was a cocktail party, dinner, Q&A deal, where he showed all of the film he had from MSG. It was kind of weird in that afterwards, no one would say what they had seen. It was organised by StonesDoug and apparently, Albert asked all the attendees to keep mum on the actual details of the footage. People on Shidoobee who didn't attend got quite irritated and things got a little heated about all the secrecy. I spoke to one of the guests at the Wildwood gathering the following year and the person said that they had seen the full setlist's worth of footage.

It makes me wonder if anyone will be interested by the time they decide to release this and other hidden treasures. Maybe I'm way off but I don't think there's going to be a lot of rockers after we pass on. Case in point, I don't see a large interest in stars of swing era music. But of course all this has been discussed many times on IORR.

On reading other threads on the subject, I dont think we really know what was recorded, (presumably the whole show, it wouldnt make any sense not to.... would it?) What ended up on the cutting room floor, what they havent released yet.
I'd be bitterly disappointed if it was released and was incomplete

Here it is on YouTube (of course not as good as the 1967 version, but that's obvious). Did anyone say Taylor couldn't play rhythm, by the way? I think he could.

Where in the hell did this come from. I have every frame of the Gimme Shelter version imprinted on my brain - this is great! WOW! I've never seen this angle / version before.

That was absolutely mind-blowing!!!!!!!!!! I have never seen that either. OMG that is the Stones at their best, in their prime, in the Zone. I am almost literally in shock!!!

Was that ripped from the GYYYO relase with the bonus DVD from a few years ago? OMG that was red hot and it's like a pleasant dream to see Mick and the boys like that.

The toys that we have in this day and age. Wow. I will be watching that a few more times.

When I was a kid I used to say if there is a heaven when you die, and heaven literally means you can have anything you want, then one of the things on my list was to go see the Rolling Stones at MSG in 1969. So that clip was like a 'slice of heaven' for me.

Also, seeing a stage that is just chest-high and the people in the front row up so close like that, no barriers... I cry because that's a bygone dream in these times. It seems so innocent in a way, but it's so rock'n'roll. People jammed up to the very front of the stage, just an arm's grasp away from the performers... there is something magical about it.

Sigh....

Its from the bonus DVD that came with the GYYO deluxe box set. It has Prodigal Son, You Gotta Move, Under My Thumb/I'm Free, and Satisfaction sprinkled with some studio snippets.

Thanks Whitem8 for the info. I am not an avid "stuff collector" so this old news came as a very pleasant surprise to me!

Yeah, I think this box set gets overlooked and is quite good. The CD sounds great, adding performances from BB King and Ike and Tina Turner. A nice hard bound book, post card of the concert poster, and the bonus DVD. It is a nice set, well made and reasonably priced. I was just revisiting it yesterday parting at home letting off steam and had Satisfaction on repeat 10 plus times! And comparing to the Gimme Shelter DVD, there is no drop in sound, and it is far clearer than the GS version. It is phenomenal, and begs for a release of the entire show on DVD.

This hardly sounds like the same band that played the 1981 version. This version from 69 is astounding.

WOW!!!! Simply stunning. Isn't the band and the crowd hot, or what? Among the very best Stones footages ever done. Captures the atmsophere incredibly well, especially that 'trick' of shooting the band behind works finely (as in TAMI show). Where the hell they lost these great ideas by the time they started making LADYS AND GENTS movie? Even though the band is smoking hot there, the camera work is rather dull and really dated.

Yeah, number one in my wish list of archive vaults project: all the Maysles concert material from 1969 in some kind of decent package. Please!

I also agree with the people who talk about "weave" in regards to 1969, and especially in "Satisfaction". What is intersting in 1969 is that the roles of the guitarists are not so fixed yet. Mick and Keih seemingly are in the middle of creative process, of how to deliver the goods together, and the ideas change a song by song, a gig by gig. Especially Keith has much more surprises and imagination in his playing than in 1972/73. He was not just a riff master or "keeping that rhythm down-down-down" yet. And Taylor also was able to hold his horses more, and had not yet the disposition to fill every space with his fluidy notes (by 1973 I think he did that just to ease his boredom). Both Keith and Mick sound so concentrated and inspired in 1969 - both of them learning a new game.

^ That and the Tami Show is probably the best live stones footage out there.

Both full of freshness, a shared experience with an audience, and the band has something to prove. cool smiley

Yeah, it is crazy that a Rolling Stones Tour of America 1969 has not been released. With all the various footage that is in the can. I would guess that there is probably a lot of an entire show from MSG, and they could also have more of the Altamont show, and other film from the rest of the tour. it could be something really special. Again a big deluxe box set. Have it be multiple DVD's, with the entire BB set and Tina set. Promos from 69, a hardbound book. Invest some time in compiling something really special.

It's crazy that all or most of their 60's promo videos, tv appearances, BBC Sessions etc etc haven't been released.

There's already a nice chunk of stuff available from the '69 tour. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
