if I need to rate Keith out of 10 then i wll give him 6 in this performance. If he practises then he will get his touch back

I hope that turns out to be the case. Keith has admitted that in the last couple years, especially when he was doing his book he hardly touched a guitar. As a guitarist myself, I know that I go through periods when I play everyday and I can play pretty well during those periods. For whatever reason, there have been periods where I hardly touched an instrument for six months or longer. When I get back to it, I still remember how to play all my favorite licks and riffs but the rust has gathered and I play like shit. It takes a while to get the rust off. I'm hoping that what we are seeing is a "rusty" Keith. Maybe doing these appearances is one way he's shaking off the rust and with regular practice he'll start playing much better. That's the optimistic view. However, if age, arthritis or memory problems stifle his ability to get in better shape it will be a sad thing. The man is my mentor. I like to say that Keith "taught" me how to play the guitar as I never took lessons. I learned the basic chords from a book and then I worked on learning riffs and solos by listening to albums like Ya Yas over and over until I figured out how to find the licks I was hearing him play. The first solo I ever learned note for note was his solo from the Ya Yas version of Sympathy. Then, when videos became more available I studied his hands to see how he was playing things. It didn't hurt to take some music theory courses in high school that opened my eyes to how to improvise in any given key and so forth. But if it wasn't for the way Keith's playing moved me, I may have never wanted to play guitar. I'll always have the highest respect for him for the musical legacy he's given us. I think it's amazing that the Stones continued to play as well as they have into such advanced years. I know a lot of people say he was bad on the Bigger Bang Tour but I guess I'm lucky I didn't see any shows like that. I saw them twice on that tour and he was in great form as was the rest of the band. watching Jagger run around the huge stage was amazing for a guy who was 62 at the time. If Keith can't do it anymore, I'll be bummed but we all get old and age dimishes most people's abilities to do certain things over time. (Blows my mind that Jeff beck, who I think is about the same age as the Stones, still plays so brilliantly!) So if Keith really can't handle a full scale Stones tour and play well enough to pull it off, well..he's already done it and no one else will ever sound quite like he did at his best. Long live The Human Riff...even if he can no longer riff. I hope he can.

Funny how Costello changed the lyric of 'unfastened' to 'unloosen', which means 'to tighten'.

What worries me though is that to play in the Chuck Berry style is really not rocket science. There's a dozen or so standard licks, which can be played in any key. These licks are really not difficult at all -brilliant, but not difficult. Once you've learned how to play these licks, something Richards did in the very early 60's and played ever since, it's just like swimming or riding a bicycle: you well always be able to play them, even when you didn't touch a guitar for 5 years. Sure it will be less fluid then, but that actually is part of the attraction of Chuck Berry styled playing.

I have said it before in a Shine a Light thread –what worries me is that his mind appears to be the problem. Ever since his brain attacks his mind seems to work slower than his fingers. On Shine a Light you can see him thinking: ‘I know this song, I’ve played it a million times, here we go to a C chord’, but at that moment the band has moved to a D chord already.

Maybe you saw a different SAL than I did, not to mention the audio CD for reference. I think you're reading things into what Keith is thinking and being behind the song. He looks very assured to me. Take perhaps the most Chuck Berry-style song in the set, She Was Hot. Keith is spot on and nails it from start to finish. There's no hesitation with chord changes and his Berry-inspired fills and solos are great. I think Keith's work throughout the film is top notch, especially his chord work - even if his solos are leaner than in younger years. When he's sticking to the groove, he's playing exactly what fits. My only complaint is he's lower in the mix than I'd like when he's not soloing. Play it loud through headphones. His work on JJF, All Down the Line, Shattered is superb. Funky, in the groove, yet understated. Perhaps some people mistake subtlety and understatement for not playing well. Charlie Watts doesn't go nuts like Keith Moon. I guess he's playing poorly and always has.

haha, well, you really are watching a different SAL than I do -on She Was Hot Richards literally doesn't have a clue what song the band is playing. He figures out the first chord of the verses, and as he doesn't know the rest that's all he does: pointless noodling in G.

Mathijs[/quote]

Although it was cool that they played She Was Hot on that tour, it was by no means anywhere near as good or as interesting as the LP version. Slowed down, fine, but the playing from the string section and the singing from the singer was not exactly inspiring. It's just flat out strange how some songs they can just kill, like Monkey Man and Midnight Rambler, and others they can't seem to deliver. I know it's always been that way but the last few tours they have had some killer songs and others, which would seemingly be easier to play, have been tepid at best and awful at worst.

Much better than Sway and Under My Thumb though. I'm glad they didn't bother to do those for the Beacon shows.

I remember getting the SAL CD when it first came out and counted how many times Keith did that obnoxious "noodle" lick he likes to do and in "She Was Hot" I think he did it more than 10 times in just that song!

NOODLE LICK!

Justin, sometimes you have a way of writing that states the obvious in a painfully hilarious way! I about tossed my coffee with that one!

strange but true: to unloose = to let loose, to set free, to undo (a knot for example)

Thank you. I know we don't usually agree on the merits of "latter day Stones," but I get where you're coming from on that issue and I respect your point of view. I have a feeling we might agree on what an essential figure Keith Richards is among rock artists. He is my favorite musician in all of rock and roll even though as a guitarist myself I know there are many players more technically gifted. But at his peak, even his simplest licks could just nail me to the wall. Nobody sounds like he did in his prime. I'd love to see him play well but I conceed it may not happen again. But he's given us so much. He will go down in the history of rock and roll the way people like Louis Armstrong went down in the history of jazz; a truly legendary and iconic figure. Thank God for the technology of recording. Keith and the Stones may fade away but we can forever go back and listen to Exile, Brussells, Hampton and so much more...

Ah - the noodle lick! Actually I like his noodle lick. It fits..and rock and roll is full of repeated licks and riffs. But I know we'll never agree on SAL so I respectfully wish you a good day!

haha hope you didn't make a mess! It's funny, I cringe every time I hear that lick but the only time I feel it works (and works wonderfully) is in Keith's great solo on "Let Me Down Slow." That solo in general is one of Keith's best, in my opinion.

Yes indeed. I think lately the posing and running of the mouth from Keith has really battered his image around here lately..I'm guilty of this too. I think that's why there is a touch of hostility in these posts about his playing. In that video, we see the charming, slightly embarassed Keith talking to a camera..very vulnerable. It's when he puts on the "I'm a bad ass" thing and starts shooting off on Mick and whomever else and is a huge turn off...

He started doing it on Stripped, then it started popping up everywhere.
Boo Boo BWEE Boo...

He's just picking a key and staying there. Why do his full hands have arthritis when he's only ever plyed a solo with two fingers??

Thank god these two never performed 'Carol' as they 'd probably spend all night teaching each other the intro. Chuck's performance of 'Johnny B. Goode' was sad, to say the least! I just watched Costello and Keith's 'Promised Land' on youtube and that was sad, too!
