for fun (or torture)... my version of Gimme Shelter

In April I am singing three songs for a local theater fundraiser up here in Maine, where I actually get to front a band instead of hiding behind my drum kit. Since I won't be able to place a sheet of lyrics on my floor tom, I actually have to memorize lyrics, and one of my tactics is to learn and record the song... Anyway, one of the songs is Gimme Shelter and I took some liberty with it here. Lots of fun was had, and apologies if I have ruined the song for you!! [jtatumgale.tumblr.com]

Excellent!! But why didn't y'all use the hollow gourd called a guirro to complete the sound?

Hey, I quite enjoyed that and I've heard a lot of bands make a real mess of Gimme Shelter. Loved the drumming!

Gimme Shelter with Sympathy percussion. grinning smiley

It's actually pretty cool, bit ragged, but good ragged. The greatness of the song comes through! thumbs up

Good job, nice version. The mix isn't how I would have it though, your vocals are buried and the drums are way up for my taste. I do understand that it's for fun and you're primarily a drummer though winking smiley .

James, you're right. I had a hard time with the mix... The percussion is loud, but I wanted it prominent, as an experiment. No real equipment here, just my laptop, and I had to do each track one at a time, as it's just me. I totally hear you, though... even as a drummer I really dislike drums that are too loud (as in Dirty Work, for example). The problem with my mixing percussion at home is that when it is mixed low, the congas and bongos suddenly sound really thuddy and the tone of them is lost. As for my vocals, I sorta bury them on purpose as I am quite amateurish, especially in that category.

I understand the woes of demoing at home with that kind of equipment, haha!
What you've done though with what you have shows you have a well-rounded understanding of music. And your voice isn't as bad as I think you think it is, I wanted to hear it louder actually which is why I commented.

Listening to 'I Pretend They're All You' now, James... Thanks for your kind words, especially coming from a real pro vocalist. And I love the Keith-esque guitar intro to this tune... Your band sounds like a lot of fun.
