The band I play in does a few Stones songs, but we ain't young, and we ain't popular. And we would be derided by nay sayers here as doing only warhorses...

I guess it's up to the band to do something with whatever they play...a rough band can do a great version of 'Yesterday'...

I was explicitely asking for bands which exist today and consist of young people. I did not mean oldies bands or bands from yesterday.

My intention was to find out if Stones music still means something to young bands nowadays.

No, it's not pointless! That another band does a cover of one of their favourite tunes is always a pride and joy for the original artist. It proves their music lives on from one generation to another!
We should as fans be grateful that new bands does our favourite bands' tunes, as they deliver it to a whole other fanbase. Conservatism amongst Stones-fans are sometimes shameless.

she's not a rock band, but she did have a single recently that both name-checked
jagger and sold 6 million copies, and her apparently impromptu cover of "dead
flowers" totally rules. her and her very young friends own it...

a slightly different answer to your question is that there are no more rock
bands. except the foo fighters, for what they're worth. yeah i know the black
keys are hanging in there for the moment, vibing off the stones to some extent,
but they certainly seem like mere flashes in the pan. maroon 5's only real
success has been with the saccharine "moves like jagger" and they're gonna have
to stick with pop if they wanna keep selling. coldplay has converted from rock
to pop in order to survive. even u2 can't sell records anymore, and all their
biggest-ever tour proved is that there is very little (net) money left in
touring for even the biggest acts, because of how expensive it has gotten
to put on such a big show.

think about this: mick jagger probably cleared about $30 million for humping his
ass around the world for two years on A Bigger Bang. "the dream", a co-writer
of Umbrella by rihanna, reportedly earned $15 million. For CO writing ONE song.

a song like Umbrella or adele's Someone Like You now gets played on lotza radio
stations in virtually every country on earth, and the royalties just flood in...

y'all know about the revolution that happened when big acts stopped making
money sellin records and started cashing in on tours, becasue the stones were
one of the chief beneficiaries.

y'all need to know about the current revolution, where tours are somewhat a
favor that big acts do for their fans, like releasing albums. tours, like
albums, are becoming loss leaders. artifacts.

the only big source of music money these days is hits singles and hits radio,
and its humongous. The lesson, as always: Follow the money.

here's another way to think about it. once upon a time, the downest black cat
from the downest poverty would become a juke-joint blues dude. while the
uppest smartest most talented white dude would become a concert pianist via
julliard...

but now? the downest black cat, with the dopest beats, teams up with the most
talented white dude coming out of julliard to write songs for somebody like
rihanna, and they all get rich...

the only way to stop em is with a cannon, and maybe not even that...

sure, there might come a day when the world once again wants to hear from
a humble band of troubadours, doing it all themselves, croaking out the blues,
or the news, but that day is certainly not now.

end of lesson.

Stones music is everywhere, even 'world' music artists cover Stones songs. They have made a large and lasting footprint on the world of music. I would say equal to that of The Beatles, at present maybe even more so.

That is just a faulty statement. There are just as many rockbands as there ever were. But the Net, and pop culture, are the loudest and most present on the boards and reg TV are all about single artists; many female, many Hip Hop. I think, to say that there are no more bands is to believe what those shallow peddlers want you to believe.

Kings of Leon, Radiohead, Killers,Temper Trap, Gaslight Anthem are the first I think of bands that are fairly recent.
calling Black Keys 'hanging in fore the moment, vibing off the Stones' must mean that you are not familiar with their history and discography'.

Making big $ off writing one song has always existed. Don't know how that enters into this. A friend of mine wrote the "lyrics" to the B52's B-SIDE of a hit single; the flipside! All the lyrics are- is a bunch of girl names strung together. he has lived off it since.

yes, I agree - the album as artform has left us.
