OT: McCartney finally kicks the waccy baccy

Macca says he's finally giving up pot, at the age of 69, for the sake of his young daughter Beatrice.

Here's the story from today's Daily Telegraph (UK).

The former Beatle said it was finally time to give up smoking the drug due to a “sense of responsibility” in caring for his daughter.

“I smoked my share. When you’re bringing up a youngster, your sense of responsibility does kick in, if you’re lucky, at some point,” he said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “Enough’s enough – you just don’t seem to think it’s necessary.”

The 69-year-old rocker also revealed that the Fab Four had considered a reunion but had decided against it so they didn’t “spoil the idea of the Beatles”.

In the magazine interview Sir Paul admitted to smoking cannabis "a lot" and has previously declared a passion for "wacky baccy". Heather Mills, the mother of Beatrice, claimed Sir Paul smoked marijuana as often as most people drink cups of tea during the couple's divorce proceedings.

He didn’t explain why he hadn’t given up cannabis for his other four children.

Bob Dylan introduced Sir Paul to marijuana in the mid-Sixties after discovering the Beatle was a “pot virgin”. Following the introduction, Sir Paul became a prolific drug user – more so than fellow band member John Lennon – experimenting with heroin, LSD and cocaine.

Some of the Beatles hit songs were believed to have been inspired by drugs, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds perhaps being the most poignant; a song banned by the BBC because of its suggested undertones.

McCartney has been arrested several times for his use of drugs. In 1972 he was arrested in Scotland and Sweden for possessing cannabis and in 1980 he was deported from Japan after half a pound of the drug was found stashed in his luggage.

He's been smoking pot for over 40 years.

Reported incidents of Paul "losing it" or "out of control" = zero.

In 2004 he said "I don't actually smoke the stuff these days. It's something I've kind of grown out of."

"Sir Paul admitted to smoking cannabis "a lot""

That would explain the tepid music Paulie gave us for decades...?

My same thought.

In that time, an entire generation has grown up with the universal reaction to hearing a new McCartney song: disappointment

For some, maybe. But not a whole generation, so speak for yourself. He has been acknowledged for a lot of his music since 1970.

How about since 1990 then? That's 22 years.

Has there ever been a moment of immediate anticipation/sudden letdown like Paul's 9/11 Concert debut of the song "Freedom?"

I don't expect Paul to produce another classic like "Yesterday" but if he could now come up with something even half as good as "For No One" it would be a great day indeed.

Don't even get me started about this new "Valentine" tune. It's another one that starts with promise, and then suddenly unravels.

Let's hope he gets his focus back. I'm a fan, and I would love nothing more than to hear a great new McCartney song again.

Think he quit long time ago - just the usual crappy Macca comment to get attention.

Hi mtaylor:

But Paul McCartney is a much better guitarist than Mick Taylor.

Discuss.

It is slated for release this year. Some rumors circulating that it will include the Mono mix as well. Which would be phenomenal! The promo Mono mix is one of McCartney's most sought after collector's items.

Also it is rumored that he is going to put out a box set after all the deluxe editions with alternate takes and outtakes. I hope he does!

He smoked it a few times in the 60's supplied by Robert Fraser, from the Indica Art Gallery. They were good friends. He said he only did it a few times and didn't like it. He also did Coke, but didn't like the come down.

..and every time we have to read this stupid line when it's quite clear that it is 'Happiness is a warm gun' that is the most poignant...

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield...

The thing is, if he did write a great song again would we appreciate it?

I think great songs are part of the time they are written.

I don't think if he wrote "Yesterday" today it would get so much attention. That is not detracting from the song, it's just the spirit of the age was all part of it. That spirit has long gone.

It is ridiculous to say as a fan he hasn't written any good songs lately. Incredible! His recent out put has been fantastic, and much like Dylan he has enjoyed a late career renaissance. Electric Arguments is phenomenal, and one if his best albums he has made. Flaming Pie has a lot of good stuff on it. Memory Almost Full, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard and Driving Rain are wonderful. Individual songs that stand out from his recent output: Back in the Sunshine Again, Flaming Pie, That Was Me, Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight, Jenny Wren, Vanity Fair, Friends to Go, Sing the Changes, Two Magpies...the list can go on and on.

He has a fantastic output, he is constantly on tour (saw him in Dec 2009, Dec 2011 and will see him in March 2012). He is a real working musician, not a resting musician.

C'mon, he's used coke for years and probably now too, at times. He did also did heroin in the early 70s.

Well I am sure he partook at times, but he was by no means a big time user. And heroine, no, I don't agree that he was a user past the time he relates trying it. Macca never seemed strung out. More a stoner. Big time weed smoker. Big time!

Yup - he likes de weed mon! In the 80s a popular weed dealer I knew in north London told me how he'd just been bought out of about a pound of the stuff as one of Macca's gofers had come down and cleaned him out...much to my annoyance.

On the Alternate Ram (mono), that's been doing the rounds for a while there are a few interesting unreleased trracks that will probably surface on the deluxe edition of Ram.
These are Sunshine Sometime; Rode All Night; A Love For You; Three Legs (acoustic); Heart Of The Country (acoustic); Back Seat Of My Car (instrumental) and 6 radio promos. Look around and you'll find it.

The segue of That Was Me, Feet In The Clouds, and House Of Wax from Memory Almost Full are some of the best things he's recorded since The Beatles broke up. Almost psychedelic.

Yes indeed Silver! i love that run. Reminds me of Abbey Road/Redrose Speedway. Great stuff. House of Wax is wonderful, and there are some great live versions of it as well.
