I've never seen the Beach Boys...mainly because the band has been so splintered for decades.
Is it worth taking a 12-year old or will her expectations be diminished?

Is she already a fan of their music? If so, by all means! (Even if she isn't, she'll probably still dig it!)

Brian's band is excellent and they're really committed to his songs...a great group of musicians. I've seen him solo several times the past 10+ years, and saw the Beach Boys (with Carl) many times before that. Not sure what the set list will be like on the tour, but I hope we get some deep tracks (which Brian does frequently) alongside the hits.

She loves them! That's why I don't want her to be disappointed...

She'll be disapointed in YOU if you don't take her!

THey are playing the 21,000 capacity Darien Lake amphitheater near me. I cannot see them attracting more than 3000 people. Their last several tours thru this area (albeit without Brian Wilson) have been free outdoor shows outside a casino or a minor league baseball game.

They belong playing in 2000 seat concert halls with good acoustics (though I am not a fan and still would not go).

My last time seeing them was as they were miming to a backing track during a show after a baseball game in the 80s. It was pathetic.

Keith Spera for the Times Picayune (nola.com) wrote about their 'performance' on the Grammy's that it would be nice if they bothered to rehearse before they play Jazz Fest.

Nice puns guys.

So you're saying "nobody should go to this tour" and "it's total crap" based on this guy's review of their Grammy performance?

Just trying to follow your logic here.

Why Brian Wilson bothered to work again with this tool, god only knows

He's a tool but he's also the co-writer of several masterpieces, like "Good Vibrations" and "California Girls." Being obnoxious is his raison d'etre, I don't think he can help it.

Maybe. He's usually spot on about things like that. However, it's a off the cuff way of saying it seems to me like a really bad idea. One might think that for the Grammy's you'd make sure you have your act together, seeing that a lot of people actually watch that show. Certainly the Black Eyed Peas aren't any better than their Super Bowl 45 'performance'.

Then again, these days nobody is truly concerned about the quality of music they get for the money they spend.

Yeah I saw it. Seemed very...I dunno. Scattered. I get why Wilson didn't tour. Mike Love and his pointing is just...what, I guess that's his deal. How many people were on stage with 'em anyway? Seemed like a lot of the carrying of the Beach Boys was all the instrumentation. Love looked like a farmer up there.

Perhaps they need a lot more rehearsal. It wasn't horrendous but it wasn't good either.

Brian's been touring regularly with his own band since 1999...the same band that was on the stage there at the Grammys. Regarding the size of the band, the Beach Boys haven't performed as a self-contained unit (two guitars, bass, drums, vocals) since about 1966...the complexity of many of their songs dictated additional instrumentation on stage. As for Mike's pointing and looking like a farmer up there, I suppose those can be reasons not go to see them for some people.

Anyhow, for the guy to imply that the band needs to rehearse tells me he wasn't watching very closely and I'm guessing he didn't even know it was Brian's band...guys who know "Good Vibrations" and the entire Beach Boys catalog inside out. "Unrehearsed" was the last word that comes to mind with the Grammy performance...so the whole basis of his review goes out the window.

The tour ends outdoors in Tahoe in July. If they make it that far I might be tempted to go.

Well, I haven't seen the BB because they were always fighting, and half the group toured with one group of musicians, the other half toured with someone else....
It never seemed like the Beach Boys to me.
But all I know is that I was really impressed with Brian's band on the Grammy...really impressed. If they're that good at re-creating all that fantastic music, it will be worth it.
And I want to see Brian Wilson.

Huge BB/Brian fan here. I would basically rather see him and his band, but there are a few reasons to go beyond curiosity and nostalgia. Major -- that Brian will not be singing lead on virtually all the songs. I love the guy but his vocals, though generally competent, lack the luster and strength needed to punch them across. Farming some out to Al, Mike, and whomever (Foskett?) will be a big plus. He is also absolutely the world's worst front man, though that works in its own way and I will still take it over corny Mike Love. The main reason to go I am telling you is that it is mostly Brian's band! They are exquisitely mind blowing -- wonderful carriers of the Gospel....
