I LOVE the man but his live playing is getting worse and worse; shame on the jam with Johnny Depp's friends, he went twice out of time repeating the same lick over and over ... really worried.

The video was cut several times. Hardly a clip to judge on.

I doubt that he can still play after the long break he took, you cannot take such a long break at his age after suffering a stroke and come back.
If Keith did have a stroke, I can relate personally, although I think I was in in worse shape. In 2006 I suffered from a massive stroke that left me with total paralysis of the left side of my body, and ending up hospitalized for several months. I did regain movement and continue to work on it til this day. I also am on, along with other meds 300mg of dilantin daily due to seizures. My guitar playing skills went from amature to zero. I now play guitar daily and accept I will never be as good as before. After a stroke guitar playing is way down the list of things that will never be the same. I am in no way sayng Keith did have a stroke, or comparing my guitar skills to his, but from any head injury things change like it or not.

The problem with this threat is that the question will not be answered - we'll know on opening night, not before.

his rythm stuff is played well and groovy in SAL: the problem is his very limited skills soloing nowadays

The answer is simple, this question you pose has been running on all Stones fan boards for the last few years. In all those years Keith has never ever taken the trouble to proof he can. And he would have rest assure, if he could, the answer therefor is unavoidable and hard... NO he can't! Clear and simple.

Yes he can! And he will! Soon!

The only real performance I can remember was the Stu tribute album.. Even then his licks were the lazy (but beautiful ones) we have heard alot recently. I love the man's work and listen to his playing daily but he seems to be doing everything except picking up the tele! I really hope he plays his heart out at the Sumlin memorial! Btw, yes I have heard the Tom Waits album.. I like Tom but not his music! Could barely hear evidence of Keith on the track.
Can you?

Keith suffered a stroke? confused smiley
you either have inside knowledge or you don't have a clue what you're talking about!

IFAIK, Keith had a life threatening concussion which needed surgical intervention and following medication.
That is not a stroke! obviously Stones Blah can tell you more about it.

concerning playing after a long break - yeah, you lie on your back and just can't remember how you rode a bike way back then. eye rolling smiley

I'm not expecting the dextergy of younger years - but I'm sure he's still got it when the Stones start rolling.

I really think they should drop any Keith songs from their set. I mean, he doesn't play on them anyway and his guitar is what I enjoy most on songs such as Happy and Before They Make Me Run and Little T&A and so on. His axe is basically a prop any more.

if they drop the mick songs, too, we can finally just concentrate on charlie and ronnie...

I would like to see him get back to playing rhythm guitar. Just rhythm. Drive the songs. Forget weaving. Forget any leads.

Everyone's skills deteriorate with age. No escaping it. Arthritis is a particularly cruel disease for those who need incredibly good fine motor skills. I would think that playing rhythm is a lot easier on swollen knuckles than playing lead. Plus, I believe the Stones were a much better band when Keith led it with his driving and tasty rhythm licks. Let Woody (or Taylor) concentrate on leads.

When Mick can no longer sing and run around the stage at the same time any more, I might agree, until then...

If it was an unplugged and seated tour playing blues classics I'd say yes.

Bingo!
Yet he insist on solo-ing; especially the minute anyone else starts to solo. I was saying this somewhere else: it might be wise to hone in on what he is good at now. Get some good rhythm playing together, and gte a set-up that makes sense to the way things are. If you're older, weaker - play a lighter guitar, with less tension. And make yourself look better.
For that matter - sit down if you have to.
In the SAL film there's the part when he plays the Blues on acoustic - that wasn't bad at all.

On Connection and You Got the Silver Keith's guitar is non-existant.

Those behind-the-amps-guys: Are they expensive? Are they tax deductible? Maybe they count as equipment?

Weaving is nice when both guitars are well balanced on the mix. If you hear to SFTD in SAL (i know is hard to hear it again, sorry) at the end,kr begins to play more than 4 notes beyon the same pentatonic box that he plays along the whole album, always the same licks. An if you hear very low in the mix you have a RW that seems to play very fine, but he is not audible. If you mix the two guitars at the proper level maybe the result could be a little better (as in the same song in LYL)
The worst thing about the vegas era is the inaudible RW guitar, i really don't know if he plays fine or not, because i can almost hear his guitar

Um...okay.

But based on the last dozen or so years (perhaps longer) I'd say that ENGINE is in desperate need of a tuneup. Actually, more like an overhaul, or a rebuild. Perhaps he's got a rock 'n roll attitude and a pose, but that engine is sorely lacking in horsepower, with a DRIVING FORCE and a towing capability of a '79 Yugo.

or maybe this is more apt...
