Miss You was cool. Mick actually played harmonica! And the bit that chills way out and gets quiet.

He actually seems interested in the song.

Loved it! The shout out to Hubert Sumlin too. Fantastic. Mick has Howlin' Wolf's phrasing down, I put it at 8-1 odds he makes a cameo at the Apollo.

I loved this: Mick with Booker T, Jeff Beck, and cutting loose on the blues.

Which reminds me: why not release the blues sessions with the Red Devils from 1993?

Yeah I noticed the Hubert Sumlin mention. Would seem odd to mention it and not play at the tribute.

GRAVITY, you are way off base, in my humble opinion. Of all the presidents of late, Obama is the least likely to be thought of as a " cold fish".

Whatever.

One day I hope you understand the real world and how it works.

Obama kills men women and children with drone missiles and makes jokes about drone missiles at press dinners.

But hey.. this post will probably get deleted like the other one.

Enjoy the cosy world.

I remember a time when musicians protested against this stuff.

Mick's cool, and how refreshing to see him accompanied by a guitar player who does not get lost after a couple of notes...

Yeah, how cool is that? I bet Mick appreciates it.

I just asked Mick via twitter if he'll get together with Jeff to make an album and tour. grinning smiley

Funny, until watching this White House thang, I had no real desire to see Mick live, now I'm smitten again. Mick and Jeff in concert, a new dream.

They are both fan-@#$%&-tastic! cool smiley

Funny how things change, 236 years ago Washington and the Americans were being chased across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania by the British. Now, Washington in portrait, stares down in comfort at British and American musicians playing music together in the house of the American President.

Anyways, I thought Jagger was singing quite well, after an over the top opening "Can't Turn Me Loose." All that showesy annoying pointing and jabbing just made me cringe. The banter after the song was a sort of uncomfortable moment because Jagger is out of element with an attentive audience that is not cheering and yelling. I think that by the time Buddy Guy came out he was much more relaxed and in control.

Happy 280th Birthday George Washington!

AH, come on my dear Sicilian! The pointing is MICK! The " banter" was very casual, he seemed like he was sharing a bit of his history with buddies over a glass of wine. I think he pulled that little segment off very well. And Gravity, I think if you read the majority of posts here, it is indeed YOU who is out of touch with reality, and what in the hell are you getting into a conversation about WAR for on such a happy occasion. You should get deleted.
This is supposed to be a thread about Mick and how he performed at a very special occasion; it would seem that you, Gravity, have other issues and another agenda. See ya!

As Mickschix has already pointed out - the pointing is Mick - that's what nearly everyone expected to see- and Mick delivered.
but I do agree about" out of element" with that audience.

Mick was fantastic! Yeah, it was a bit intense hearing how out of breath he was, but man did he deliver the goods! It was great seeing his affection for the music and his friendship with Beck as well.
One thing that struck me as being profoundly sad was all the idiotic political comments on Youtube. Why can't people just enjoy the history and music without politicizing it? A shame.
But MICK still has the goods! Phenomenal!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, man is rock is dead . . . Mick Jagger playing in the white house, whaaaaaaaaaaaaa? Well, ok I've accepted it and I've accepted the vegas stones as "it is what it is" and in that mind frame: I thought Jagger was good.

I enjoyed it, however, why Miss You at a blues show? I would have perferred a blues number, a stones blues . . . Actually I would have preferred a time capsle and bring in Mick 1978 and sing Some Grils in front of that crowd, imagaine that! At least he kept the Puertorican girls are dying to meet you line, I liked that

The first song "Can't turn you loose" was cringeworthy. Not the song exactly, but Jagger's performance of it. Forced and too energetic. And, probably due to too much gymnastics and, maybe, nervousness, the nasality was there again. His "act" took over from the song. On the second song, however, he settled down a bit and was much better. Even though it looked as if he had problems remembering the lyrics and sometimes was out of pace.

He was much more verbal than usually between songs, probably due to the occasion. He is really good at it so I don't understand why he never does that regulary. He missed the protocol though: He should have saluted the President first. I don't think "Miss You" was a fitting song to do and I always find it boring regardless of the arrangements.

The last song "Five Long Years" saw his best performance of the evening. He sang really well, the nasality was gone. And we were freed of all the pointing and posing.

Absolutely agree on degree of relaxation, improving after the first number.
I mean, I love Mick being Mick, but that was almost an impression of Jimmy Fallon doing him.
Different kind of audience for sure.

Because there is a sub-species of human who exists for the sole purpose of posting mind-numbingly idiotic political comments (mostly misspelled) on any story posted on the web. What did people like this do before the Internet existed, write letters in basements warning about the dark conspiracy of flouride in the water supply?

Exactly. Before the Internet existed, these people got drunk in pubs, shitting their self-indulgent wisdom at an audience that was usually not a slightest bit interested. Now we have the Internet, and these people finally believe they can reach an audience. But in reality nothing has changed - they're still drunk, they're still talking shit, and we are still not interested in hearing their rants.

One thing has changed, though: We dare to articulate that we not interested in their wisdom, whereas in the good old pub days, we pretended listening to these people in order to avoid "problems" with these nasty bastards.

i was thinking the same thing. of course the over-the-topness might have come off better in the room itself
than on my small computer screen ... but it wasn't a good match with his visible nerves (or with that big screw-up in Can't Turn You Loose).

but it sure was fine to see him so relaxed during the closing numbers - he and Buddy Guy were ~*great*~ on Five Long Years
i wonder if they re-enacted a bit of Champagne and Reefer backstage :E

well, Sweet Home was the last, but Five Long Years was the best :E

speaking of Sweet Home Chicago, though ... the Department of Historical Accuracy hopes
that someone's told Obama by now that that particular number isn't from Chicago!
and even if it was the Mick who gave the president the mic, it was Buddy Guy who put him on the spot:
"you can do it!" that was beautiful :E :E :E

Yes what Gravity is saying is that Obama's election solgan should have been "Change You Can Make Believe In".

Nothing changed.

Men Women and Children still die.

But it's harder to attack Obama because of the "R" word.

I remember when musicians thought they were the moral conscience of a generation and metaphorically "killed the king and railed at all his servants".

Rape and murder... it never went away.
