Petrol Blues
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Pathé Marconi Studios (EMI Studios), Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, France,
January 5 - March 2, 1978

Mick Jagger - vocals, piano
Ian Stewart - drums

Please Mr. President, say it isn't so
I don't have to sell my Cadillac that I just paid for
I talk to Mr. Getty and I talk to Standard Oil
They say they got plenty
But, they ain't gonna part for no more

My friend says the trouble is this country's too goddamn big
Maybe we should pull it in from the ages a bit
Maybe that way we'll have so far to go
I called Mr. Getty, I even called up Texaco, Texaco
They got plenty left, they got, plenty to go
Hey, Mr. President, say it isn't so
Ah, Mr. President, say it isn't so
Why do I have to sell my Cadillac I just paid for, I just paid for

Produced by The Glimmer Twins, Chris Kimsey & Don Was

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Some Girls” 2CD
(Universal Music 278 924-3) UK, November 18, 2011

Maybe we should pull in from the edges a bit

to make it a bit smaller, see? so we won't have so far to go

The beauty of simplicity.
It surprised me Stu is playing the piano. It sounded like a "Hide your love", "Exile on Main St. blues",
kind of Mick experiment to me.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Yes... what an effortlessly charming little ditty, the perfect coda to the Southern-fried SG Deluxe disc 2.

The topic of oil was of course on the minds of every car owner back then, with gas lines becoming a symbol of the economic malaise of that era.

And now in 2012, the world is waking up to the fact that we are going to run out of oil pretty soon. Production is peaking, and once it starts to drop, all hell is going to break loose.

Jagger says 'go faster Stu' halfway, indicating he's on piano. BUt it could be Jagger is on piano, and Stu is sitting behind the drums having a bit of fun.

Anyway, it is a total throw-away.

I think it is a spontaneous blues jam, nothing more, nothing less, a little truncated, but better by far than any disco shit like Miss You and Emotional Rescue. Authentic Stones stuff.

ask for the uncut bootleg track by name; you'll be glad you did.

Didn't you say this song sounded like Robert Johnson in another thread? I myself don't hear it, but you know, whatever.

also....Mick could never deliver a song today with that kind of humor in his vocal delivery

I'd guess the reason this one is on Some Girls Deluxe when other "better" tracks were left out is the same reason as the last track on Dirty Work: just because it's Stu. marcovandereijk thought it sounded like Mick on piano: I think both Mick and Keith on piano sound a bit like Stu - probably because they learned a lot of it from him. Don't think either of them ever had any formal piano lessons.

The piano playing is kind of tentative. Doesn't sound like Stu at all to me. I still think it's Mick.

A waste of time. And incredibly pathetic that they edited it for the SG deluxe release to omit a line about arabs in case anyone would take offence or take it out of context.

This is the same band who left in all those un-pc lyrics on 'Some Girls'. So much for the 'deluxe' songs being put together in the spirit of the original 1978 album.

Good point. I couldn't believe they edited out the Arab line.

I agree about the song but geez, give the guys a chance to grow up on their own terms. peace.

Growing up isnt really the point, in fairness.

It was hardly a controversial line by any logical standards. I'm all for letting them grow up on their own terms (I found some of the lyrics of songs like 'Oh No Not You Again', and 'Rough Justice' pretty juvenile considering they were written by a man in his 60s - whereas I liked the more mature lyrics of 'Laugh I Nearly Died' or 'Biggest Mistake') but if theyre going to edit what was already a throwaway piece which had been recorded 33 years earlier, it would have made far more sense to just a) leave the song off altogether or b) replace it with something else.

If its meant to reflect how the Stones were in 1978, then why apply 2011 standards of over the top political correctness for the over-sensitive? Were people really going to take umbrage at this?

In the form that they chose to release it, it was just pointless.

A waste of time.

... huh?? whose time???

the track is about a minute long to listen to, so you can't mean it wastes your time,
or that it wastes valuable disk space or anything serious like that.
and - in fairness :E - given what the Stones accomplished at these sessions it don't seem right
to begrudge them a brief bit of fooling around.

but censoring it was indeed a strange thing to do

a waste of their time to work on a song and release it in that 'shape'.

Its inclusion in edited form is just pointless.

a piano hook with one change, dated lyrical references about American oil, bad sound quality. "Songs" like these make me apprciate technology - this song is a needle-lifter, a fast-formward, a ">>" button tune. Luckily I can choose to not put in on my mp3 player, which I have. Yawn. Next...
