Six pages on this board about Whitney Houston.
Maybe Elton John can sing a song about her.....
He did, see page 5 of this thread:Quote
Elton John
"This is a sad day today, all I want to talk about is her music. She was the
most beautiful woman I think I ever saw .... Thank you for giving us your
talent, and one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard." — Elton John,
from the stage at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, before dedicating the song "Don't
Let the Sun Go Down on Me" to Houston.
What, no "Candle In The Wind"?

I don't get this. What is possibly wrong with dedicating a song to a colleague that has just passed away under tragic circumstances and far to young? Is that something to ridicule?

You actually must be a total retard to be able to make the switch from my dislike of technical wizardry to my 'satisfaction' when comparing the way Jones and Houston died, the latter of which I didn't say a word because I really have no interest in that.
Disturbed you are.<Mathijs>
Why doesn't it occur to you when someone passed away 1 day ago, the last thing most people are interested in is your dislike about (her) singing abillties.
Because this thread is 50% discussion on her music, with as many people liking it as disliking it, and 50% about her life and especially her demise.
As I am not interested in her life and her demise, but interested in music general, I feel I am free to state here that I always has disliked her, as much as I disliked most of the soulless, technical wizardry of 80's music, whether it being kitch pop or guitar orientated music. Of course, you had to react due to the latter, which made you come out as a total retard.

I am actually surprised at the callousness I have read across the web about Whitney's passing.

Don't know if you are referring to me, but I don't feel callous at all, just reacting to a lot of the fake reverence, pontificating, and culture of media celebrity death gossip we have to endure whenever someone like this dies this way. It's actually the reaction to the death, not callousness toward the deceased person herself. But I am sure some do not bother to distinguish the difference. The person's faults and problems are are rolled out by the newspapers and media, along with the morbid speculation about all the details of the death. And the public consumes it. I find it all quite distasteful and use humor to show my distaste...People should be allowed dignity in death regardless of their past or celebrity status.

Oh take a pill, she f*cked up! It isn't our fault she did. When you take prescription downers it tells you not to mix w/alcohol. She had problems, just like anyone else, she just had more of them. She tried it her way and it didn't work. I haven't been that far away from her behavior myself over the years.

OK, someone died. Bummer. Never a good thing and I have compassion for Whitney as a human being. That said, whenever a celebrity to whom every opportunity is given destroys themselves (Amy Winehouse, etc) we have to endure a lot of pontificating about how "tragic" it is, and how "untimely" (when in reality it's quite "timely", given the circumstances). She died "too soon". Everyone dies too soon. I find a lot of the reverence and handwringing quite phony, and I think it's honest to say so. If Whitney Houston was just a crack addict we didn't know personally, but not famous or talented would we still have all this outpouring of grief? Of course not. I used sarcasm to make my point. I am sorry if this upsets the sensibilities of some people.

Maybe that makes you understand my "switch", not to be taken literally. And you know it.

I think the "calousness" that is displayed here and all over the internet are mainly from people that have no history or appreciation for Houston. I can't imagine many people here reacting to Keith's eventual death with "What do you guys expect? Years of drugs, Keith smoked and drank every day of his life. He's a junkie! Let's move on, shall we?"
If some of you preach about how we should all treat celebrities like "normal" people...then why not show some sympathy? Why not treat this situation as you would if they were just "normal people?" How do many of you react when someone around you has mentioned a family member has just died? Do you stare straight ahead coldly with a blank expression and say: "Too bad." flick your lit cigarette and walk away?
It is truly ironic that the ones that claim to not put celebrities on a different level than anyone else, are really in fact doing exactly that: "They are celebrities...they don't need my sympathies." Hey, if they were such "normal people" like you or I...why not show some compassion?

Nice post Justin.
When someone dies, hope is gone, and that is sad.
For someone we dont know personally, the hope that they will make a comeback is gone. If someone we know dies then hope for a better realtionship in the future is gone. It always feel like there is time to fix it all, make it right, but when someone dies all hope for that is gone too.
I have no idea why I am so sad over Whitney passing away. I am a hard core rock and roller, I dont like most pop or mellow singer types, but something about Whitney was special. Maybe it is because of the time/space/people I knew back when she was one of the hottest artist going, Maybe her passing reminds me of other people who have passed away, people I knew and loved while her songs were playing the background. I dont what it is and I am quite surprised I feel so sad about it.... and I suppose saying it out loud, in public, is as good as any therapy.
Why would people feel obligated to take pop shots at this??? who knows?
I do know that when people die whom I either dont know about or dont care about... and a thread is created for their RIP.... NEVER in a fkg million years would I open that thread and post about it and blather on and on about how little they mattered.... or how they "deserved it".... or they are unworthy.

Then again, some people really are that callous or immovable. It comes out in full force on the Internet whenever a celebrity dies or falls from grace.

Right on stupidguy2. A heartbeat is a heartbeat--any way you look at it.
I don't think people realize just where this "indifference" really stems from. I put the blame squarely on our media: TV and the internet. It's gotten so bad now that death has become this place that we send our troubled celebrities when we're just tried of reading/hearing about them on the news. People start to wish death on them just to get them out of their hair: "Thank God you're dead. Now I don't have to hear about you anymore." I suspect most people aren't aware of this but they'd rather go with the more accessible (but flawed) "you don't even know her" or "she was going to die any day now anyway" logic.
HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! ....DUDE!!!!! that is funnier asthatanything.... is the video on youtube? .... it sounds funny!! Have you gone on to be a real Hollywood film mogul?Quote

I never really listened to Whitney. But when I was in middle school in the early 90's she was huge. She was played at every dance, so I definitely know her music. In 6th grade a friend and I had to make a movie for theater class, and I don't know how we came up with it or why, but we made "The Bodyguard 2: She's Less Talented And White This Time". "She" was played by my friends little sister, and there was basically a loose plot that was a series of attempts on her life by me, which my friend "The Bodyguard" would thwart and the scene would erupt into us basically wrestling and hitting each other, and in each scene one would hit the other too hard, the other would get mad, and it devolved into an actual fight. Good times.
