.....- 48C .... that's spastic!!! ... how do you guys live with a temp like that???

Stay inside, hope for your central heating to work. Otherwise call 911 (112 here)! In fairness though, we have only had -30C in my town. That is more manageable. But cold enough!

Just two weeks ago there was a seminar in The Netherlands with climate scientists discussing why we would NEVER EVER EVER get such a cold winter again like we had in the 50's and 60's.

Last night it was -67 degrees in my bedroom.

Minus 67 degrees Celsius - you'll win, Mathijs! Can't compete with that. Do you live on top of some kind of Dutch iceberg?

I haven't read the entire thread but does anyone feel ripped off about global "warming"? I know it's not actual global warming but people keep using that term.

Actually it has been a very warm winter in Europe up till now. I guess Jack Frost had to show himself before spring. This will be over in a couple of days. February is usually a very cold winter month. The last decade winters have been milder, at least here in Scandinavia.

Re: OT: Cold weather in Europe

Regardless of it being climate change, it's all about balance. Why it does that is beyond anyone it seems. It's been, generally, a very warm winter in the southern US. There have been some freezes, inton the mid 20s (-3C) four times but only for a few hours. So where is our balance to cool things off? It's cool right now, we've been in the 80s (26C) at some points. This week we're in the 60s (17C) during the day and mid 40s (6C) at night/morning.

It's got nothing to do with global warming. It's La Nina. It does this. This is a strong La Nina this time. La Nina encourages hurricane activity, which will make for a interesting summer if it hangs around that long.

The Northern Polar Jet Stream is what determines who gets cold and how far it goes. It has dipped down as far south as Havana, Cuba. I remember being on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, FLA in 1977 or 78 and it was snowing.

Human beings cannot do anything about solar activity.

We should act like human beings have everything to do with global warming.

We have no right to try out if the world is warming or not !!

Look:

- If it turned out that human beings have nothing to do with global warming - then all we have done is give a wrong analysis.
In that case - nothing happens.

If it turns out that human beings have everything - or lot to do with global warming and - we have done nothing to prevent it
- then we have a disaster in our hands
- and it´s too late to save our planet.

We dont have any other planet where we could run this experiment.
We have no right to try out if the world is warming or not !!

- This is the only planet we have - So I find it rather stupid to debate this. We dont have any other planet where we could run this experiment.
To me - it´s common sense - We are all dependent on this one planet, so we should all think and act accordingly.

OR

You could also argue that who cares if we're causing global warming...we're slowly poisoning ourselves by these behaviours, so it just might be in our best interest to stop the pollution regardless.

If it happens to stop climate change at the same time, then what you have there, is a twofer!

Well we cannot do anything about the sun, sorry winking smiley In the 70s it was the threat of a new ice age, then it was Acid rain and since the mid 80s the powerful images of people starving in dry lands of Ethiopia. Who knows what the best temperature is, my guess is it's something a lot warmer than this. Besides temp is up 0.7 degrees up the last century and no warming the last 15 years. People, animals and plants like warmer not colder. The cold weather is horrible! But, since the Global warming is political I wont say another word about it.

Let's hope they release a perfect 1975 concert next! Hot as hell is my choice thumbs up smiley

You forgot the hole in the ozone layer which miraculously healed itself as soon as they stopped putting CFCs in aerosol cans.

Lol! Yeah forgot that one. Despite the Montreal Protocol, no change at all. Long periods of cold temps in the stratosphere may however temporarily thin the ozon layer over the Antarctic. Again, nothing we can do about it, hairsprays were popular in the 80s as were microwave cooking. I sense a pattern.

You may argue about the nature of global warming (man-made or nature-induced) BUT global warming means more energy in weather phenomenons.
That means hotter summers and colder winters.

Well, it's no longer that cold in norway. One doesn't need warm clothing anymore, the sun is up and everybody is out to play. How about down in Europe ?
