Anyone who has read "Lennon Remembers" which has been in print since 1971 has seen these quotes.

You can't help thinking what he would have said about the latter day Stones (post Vegas) had he been alive today.

At least the Stones never recorded such a disgusting song as Imagine.

From the Rolling Stone interview in 70. You can get it all off Rolling Stone.com. Lennon is pissed at everyone in this interview.

Nothing like 40-year-old "news" -- read it way back when...and the audio's been around for years.

And whitem's right, he was pissed at everyone at that time.

Man I love John Lennon. Tarty....a great way to describe Mick at that time anyway. There not in the same class he says...hmmm. Apples and Oranges in retrospect but at least the Stones had a direction after they quit copying the Beatles, lucky for us. They mastered the LIVE ROCK AND ROLL CONCERT.

It's about the music. The implication that the Beatles wrote his first and second records, i dunno about that one John. He sounds pissed off and admits being hurt by Mick's public Beatles comments. Fair enough. I think he should have taken the high road but he was in a unique position to know the truth of it all, so it's hard not to sympathize with him. peace

My impression of him is that he was quite a mean guy but at the same time very honest and, really, the only true intellectual or political Beatle or Stone.

I agree with John that the Stones really took off in a great direction after the Beatles broke up.

In his RS interview he slagged everyone and everything. The deal was that he was promoting his first solo album and did everything to distance himself from his past and the 1960's in general. Later he admitted it was something he had to go through, and made nice comments on his past later on. As for his not so kind words on McCartney and Jagger, they have been taken out of context ever since this interview and used by critics who wants to pan them. In all later interviews he had nothing but good things to say about them.

A difference was, that The Beatles had three major singing and song writing talents that wanted to branch out and do their own thing. Coupled with business disagreements and just being plain sick of each other, it was a natural conclusion they would break up. As Lennon also said in those interview, after the death of Brian Epstein it was a slow death...

Although Keith decades after kind of minimized it to a point that it seemed that it wasn't there, the beatles/stones rivalry did exist. Yes Lennon isn't talking as a Beatle in that interview, but the fact that he bitches about Mick with those very specific points tell me that there was some unspoken tension between the two groups.
Rock and Roll,

John Lennon later said, after a Stones concert, "Mick is a great entertainer." He called MISS YOU a "great track," and EMOTIONAL RESCUE a "beautiful song."

For those—unlike me—who don't like EMOTIONAL RESCUE; yes Lennon did praise the song. Here's the full quote: "Mick's put out consistently good work for 20 years, and will they give him a break? Will they ever say, `Look at him, he's number one, he's 37 and he has a beautiful song, EMOTIONAL RESCUE, it's up there'? I enjoyed it, a lot of people enjoyed it."

Not many people on this earth could have said this about Jagger and The Rolling Stones's music, but Lennon could...undoubtedly...

He does have a bit of a point though.

The records he mentions, The Stones were sometimes trying to hang onto the Beatles coat tails.

Not all the time, but quite often.

He's wrong about Apple, Mick was NEVER going to throw his money way.

Lennons point of view at the time was Primal Scream, the first solo album - greatest solo album in rock, ever. From that pov I get his comments, theyre logical. It shows how different the bands really were.

What exactly did Mick say about the Beatles that pissed Lennon off so much?

Re: John Lennon - Slating Mick - hadnt heard this clip before

Lennon was always defensive about The Beatles, even when he was hating them. Mick in some late sixties interviews said he didn't like The Beatles much, that was more Keith. But in fact in private, it was Mick around The Beatles all the time. And seemingly soaking in as much as he could. Lennon would have seen that and been flattered. During the break up Mick made some catty comments to the media about how bitchy The Beatles were being about their break up (and he is right! They were being bitchy!). But more deeply, what had started Lennon in rock and roll, and he was a leader of, The Beatles, their break up, while he yearned for it, scared him and angered him. Anger for many men is a manifestation of depression. So he lashed out, because The Stones were hitting home run after home run with their albums, and were now the last men standing in the great Beatles Stones rivalry. And if you listen to the entire tapes that have been released, Lennon is pretty much emotionally carpet bombing all that he once loved and thought sacred. No one was spared, and even himself was not immune to Lennon's blunt ability to cut to the core of a person's insecurities.

I guess Lennon gets kudos for speaking his mind but I still think that Paul made the Beatles what they were - the best ever. John alone couldn't have done it, nor Paul alone, but I think together, with Paul providing the main spark of creative energy, that made it all 'come together'. John's solo material was mostly bad - and poorly produced as well.

The Beatles probably would have ended in late 1966 were it not for Paul's drive and enthusiasm.
