I don't think this issue is as black and white as you make it. Firstly, if the crimes are actually money laundering and racketeering, I doubt you'd really be throwing your support behind that.

Your second point has merit, but measuring this is difficult. Strictly speaking, I believe artists should be compensated for their work, not ripped off. This has been an issue at least since the development of recording tapes. It's just gotten way bigger since it's possible to swap digital files in seconds. Not sure how you properly address this, but I think it will be virtually impossible for them to stop this behaviour as it is so pervasive.

Third, your analogy may have merit, but it is difficult to know at this point to what extent the criminality pervades the company. I feel bad for customers that used paid services for simply transferring their own files/for business. That said, I wonder what percentage of the business Mega Upload did would be considered legitimate. I suspect that it would not be a large percentage.

Finally, this is not about communicating with each other, it is about sharing files that have rights attached to them....to colour it any other way is being deceitful.

I don't support censorship, and I think the danger with these moves is that we move closer to censorship. However, strictly speaking, this 'police action' isn't about censorship, but about theft.

It's not so much about one greedy party to establish an alibi to set precedence. We simply cannot compromise the entire Internet because of a few bad apples. Freedom is at risk, and we must stop gov't intervention in our daily lives. Too much Monkey Business

Rapidshares'boss... a lady, told a swiss newspaper today that she has no fears that they will get closed too. But you never know. Rapidshare is located in Zug Switzerland. And a few weeks ago our governement made the decision that dowloading is legal (but uploading..), for me as swiss citizen a clear statement. If the swiss governement does allow an US intervention (what happened before) they will loose my trust in them,.. in my eyes.

We will see.

You're right about that. I think I didn't express myself well enough. What I meant is, the
FBI is trying to justify their act by putting the people behind MegaUpload to the forefront.
We must not let them throw sand in our eyes and discuss how good or bad these people are.
The discussion should be about the right a government has to block the infrastructure on the web.

Well, I was a huge user of Megaupload. And also I live in Jakarta, one of the capitals of copyright infringement. Looking at the letter of the law, Megaupload and all the other file sharing/torrent sites are breaking the law. But the greater message is to the entertainment industry. LOWER YOUR PRICES. Compete. But true, it is unfair to let sites like mega sell another person's product, but also the entertainment industry is sucking people dry, and in Asia the average person wants to see western movies, listen to western music, but can't afford to. So the industry thrives. And I admit to benefitting from it. Now the loss of mega just forces me to buy more illicit DVDs in Jakarta. You would be amazed coming here. Shops throughout the country selling every TV series, movie, and documentary for 50-70 cents a copy! And perfect quality. Now they are even selling Blue Ray DVD's for about 3 dollars a piece. Amazing. My film collection now is humongous, and I don't feel the least bit guilty. I have spent thousands of dollars on legit stuff, and view it as a bit of pay back. Illegal? Yeah, but f v c k 'em.
