Could be worse, could be better.

The sound is very digital.

I like it, aside from it's over compression. I'm hopefull the CD will be great.

someone on another forum i go to claims they've heard 7 of the songs from the cd and in their opinion this was actually one of the weakest

Thanks for the song post!

Sounds like it's not just overly compressed, it's distorted, as if the uploader of the video somehow screwed up.

Anyway, I dig it for the most part. Just to hear David Lee Roth on a new VH song is great. His voice is definitely fine here. Lotsa classic VH ingredients, even some subtle 80ish synths in the background. The only thing I don't like is the hardcorish bass sound (I prefer the softer tone of Mike Anthony's old basslines), and perhaps the seemingly banal subject matter of "Tattoo" (I prefer The Who's Tattoo, or the Stones Tattoo You, after all).

If, like keefriffhard4life says, many of the songs on the album are better than this, I'll buy it.

i'm just going by what a guy who use to work for SANCTUARY records said and thats he's heard 7 of the 13 tunes and in his opinion this song TATTOO was one of the 2 worst song he's heard. Tattoo does contain musicial elements of the song "down in flames" which was a song the band demo's in the 70's and also a portion of music later used in the bands cover of "you're no good". right now 2 other tunes for the album "bullethead" and "she's the woman" have the exact same titles as songs the band demo'd in the 70's so it probably contains elements from those 70's demo's. i'm sure a few other tunes are like that too but since the titles don't match anymore demo's until i hear the songs i can't tell

I think it's pretty weak.

Sounds a bit ZZ Top like but the "swapmeet sally" section just doesn't fit and the chorus is nothing but a few Tattoo's and Ed goes through the motions of a standard Ed solo.

Those songs/ideas that didn't make it on the earlier albums didn't make it for a reason and that is that they were not as good as other things they had and if the single and album are just rehashed old stuff that didn't make the grade the first time around then it's not a great sign.

Good for them they have a new album and video ready. But how about the Stones? I guess threads with titles like "no need for a new album" do not exactly motivate them to come up with something new, to say the least.

van halen has been taking old ideas and throwing them into songs for years. some songs from the album 1984 also released in 1984 were demo'd in 1976

Yes, they did dig up some older stuff for the first DLR era later albums but they used the best of it in the first DLR era.

The stuff they are digging up now is the stuff that was mostly rejected back in the first DLR era.

I would think just writing new songs would be the way to go instead of digging up inferior stuff from the past but maybe Ed and DLR can't write much decent stuff anymore.

Filler songs are filler songs whether they are from the Stones or VH or whoever.

The Stones might have lots of unreleased songs or ideas laying around but how much of it is not so so, I don't know.

If there was a Brown Sugar lying in the vaults then it wouldn't be in the vaults long because the Stones would realize it's not just filler and use it.

The vaults are usually full of so so stuff and filler and ideas no one really knows what to do with.

There are only a few tracks that stand out on just about any album if the band is lucky and the other songs are just usually so so and alright or just filler.

Singles are usually supposed to be selected from the stand out tracks because they stand out and people will notice the song and buy it.

The Tattoo single doesn't stand out and is so so IMO.

This is a 1984 leftover from what I understand.

Yes, you and anyone else on IORR determine what the Stones do. Don't be such a Les Miles.

Better sounding preview on Itunes. Sounds good with a blast from the past sound. Wonderful what technology can do to David Lee Roth's voice to make it seem like the Eighties again. Saw him singing live a few years back and his voice is shot in reality.

Check the video from the club show they did last week. His voice is shot.

I saw VH on their last tour (with DLR). I'm glad I went, but I think I'll sit this one out.

This is Van Halen's version of Plundered My Soul or any of the "lost"/new songs that Jagger worked on for Exile and Some Girls.

"Tattoo" is simply a re-worked version of "Down in Flames"which has been around on bootlegs for decades...I don't have an issue with it. As a matter of fact I kind of like it, but it's a 30+ year old song that VH has actually played lived under a different name.

I'm shocked that after all this time VH couldn't come up with something new as the lead single...Whatever, as I said it's pretty good and great to have VH and DLR back in action.

The Stones could do better than this and actually did with PMS.

Sounds good to me. They all look pretty good too. Ed actually looks kind of healthy. Michael Anthony is missed.

That sounds good to me! F-vuckin American rock and Roll, that guitar of Eddies' never seems to dissappoint me when it comes to tone. The video is pretty damn cool too. Looks like DLR got some new hair, he's ok with his dance moves..whatever, but Edward can play some exciting shit and Keep it rockin YEAH!

I'm hapy about this one, thatnks for posting. Van Halen is back with a smile and it's all about more about the music this time. Love the way the tune ends. And importantly, even if it's not the orig line up, it has always been the EVH - DLR chemistry that is most interesting to me. peace.

I have to admit, hearing Eddie wail/shred/scream on his guitar, WOW!! he still has "IT" 110% and I say the same for his brother on drums, Alex is a mad man.... as for the other two?... I am going to follow grandpa's advice this time and not say anything at all.

PS
I think it is very smart of them to re-release old tracks first, how can that miss?

btw- The thread was closed, but....
FYI [www.imdb.com] was one of the first NC-17 movies winking smiley

Just wish Michael was on bass instead of Wolfie. Also wish Valerie was on me.

Fully agree! Tattoo at first listen is a so snd so, but it`s a grower. Makes me smile now, great relaxed video and hope they will make it to Europe. Saw them live with all three different singers and I´m happy that DLR is back. Hope they get their shit together this time!

The upcoming tour should be one of the bigger tours of the year! Would be awesome if they opened some Stones shows!
Can't wait to get the album and see them in Vancouver.

DLR is a bit painful to watch these days, but i'll still take his singing over Hagar (nothing against Hagar...seems like a likeable guy, had a blast at his restaurant in Vegas...just don't care for his singing).

Yeah, I still like DLR in many ways, and it's great that he's back in VH. I can also understand that he doesn't wanna jump like it was 1984, but his movements seem kinda half-assed and indolent, too laid back. Guess it's risky to become the most over the top personality at 30...

Mick Jagger seems too choreographed these days, but he has more energy on stage.
