Stu's opinions on just about everything mattered to Mick, Keith, Charlie and Bill. They trusted him completely and sometimes cringed at his words. Stu was not one to mouth off about every little thing but when he had something to say he said it.

Yes, I've often thought about that.
He hated watching Keith decline with all these ghastly enablers in every country they toured in. My impression was that Stu tried to stay away from Keith as much as possible because it was too terrible to see how he had changed.

There is a fantastic testimonial of his importance: His extraordinary playing on "Under My Thumb" on 12/13/1981 in Sun Devil Stadium, which is perfectly preserved on the SDB-boots of this show. See the Laughingsam page or Rattlesnake.

I loved how he called them, "my little three chord wonders."

R u sure stu is on shattered?

Surely Stu was an important member of the Stones. But to say that his piano playing in the back added that much to the Stones sound is stretching it a bit I think.

Ian mcLagan plays on miss you

Ian's piano is part of the cement in the Stone's foundation, along with Brian's guitar. Ian played Johnnie Johnson to Keith's Chuck Berry in the early days.

I'm sure he meant much to the band, 24FPS. Especially in the beginning when they were starting out. He seemed to be somewhat of a father, or older brother, to them. But to the overall sound of The Stones I don't think his generic, toned down piano playing in the back contributed that much. Certainly not live, maybe more so in the studio though.

? Ian is feautured quite prominenently on all tours from '69 to '82. All the barrelhouse boogie woogie piano is truly instrumental to the Stones.

It's hard to know just how much influence he had musically after the initial formation of the band and the arrival and decision by ALO that Stu should be more behind the scenes. As a musician he becomes some what a bit player, but when he plays it is of course great because he was so good. This makes it all the more frustrating that he didn't play more on their records.

His biggest contribution seems to have been via hard work, keeping things rolling, getting them and their gear from A to B, the lone voice of reason when fame hit them like a tidal wave etc etc. Seems he pick and chose when to play, which isn't really such a great thing imo, but he was totally loyal to them even though they didn't really deserve such loyalty and for that alone he deserves special praise.
