Just My Imagination
(Norman Whitfield / Barrett Strong)

Pathé Marconi Studios (EMI Studios), Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, France,
October 10 - December 21, 1977

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ron Wood - electric guitar, backing vocals
Ian McLagan - Hammond organ

I look out my window, watch her as she passes by
And I say to myself, I'm such a lucky guy
To have a girl like her, is a dream come true
And of all the girls in New York, she loves me true, I’ll tell ya
It was just my imagination, once again, running away with me
Yeah, it was just my imagination, running away with me

Soon we'll be married, and raise a family
Two boys for you, what about two girls for me
I tell ya, I, I’m just a fellow, with a one track mind
Whatever it is I want, baby, I seek and I shall find, I'll tell ya that
It was just my imagination, once again, running away with me
Yeah, it was just my imagination, running away with me

Every night, I hope and pray: Dear Lord, hear my plea
Don't ever let another take her love from me, or I will surely die
Her love is ecstasy, when her arms enfold me
I hear her tender rhapsody, but in reality, she doesn't even know me
Just my imagination, running away with me
It was just my imagination, running away with me, I’ll tell ya
It was just my imagination, once again, running away with me
It was just my imagination, running away with me

It was just my imagination, once again, running away with me, let me tell ya
It was just my imagination, running away with me, running away with me
Run away, run away, run away, run away, run away, run away…

Produced by The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Some Girls” LP
(Rolling Stones Records CUN 39108) UK, June 9, 1978

The Rolling Stones are the best cover band on Earth.
'Rhapsody' is, to me, the best term to illustrate this song and that's reason
why I love Ernie Watts' sax parts, as played live in 1981.
Have a nice Monday, Luca

Original by the Temptations 1971...
Lead vocal by Eddie Kendricks and possibly his finest performance
Imagination was also his last single with the Temptations.........

Let the video tell the story:

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Their best cover. BY FAR. One of those tunes one gotta bring with to a desert island.

A very good cover of a very good song; I love the country twang they give it. I can't decide whether I prefer the Stones' version or the Temps' original, which is soothing and dreamy. The Stones' version has a lot more swing to it, of course.

The '81 live version is cool too. One of their best covers (it blows Ain't Too Proud to Beg out of the water).

In my opinion the song is kitsch. Terrible lyrics.

THE 81 VERSION LIVE IS ALL ABOUT WHAT LONGING AND THE ANGER THAT COMES THROUGH IT IS ALL ABOUT. OF ALL WHITE BANDS/ARTISTS ONLY JOHNNY CASH, OASIS, THE WHO AND STONES CAN EXPRESS THAT FEELING. GRANTED, THE BEST ARTISTS ON MOTOWN, CHESS AND DOWN IN THE DELTA ALL WERE MORE THAN FAMILIAR WITH THOSE EMOTIONS.

Man I guess I am listening to a completely different song. The 81 version sounds like Jagger is croaking and wheezing with occasional moaning by Keith that is supposed to be backing vocals.

For me, the live 78 versions are sublime. Pure guitar onslaught with Jagger actually singing. A beautiful song done right by The Rolling Stones.

they reduced the song from the Temptations style to their own, and shot it through with that very campy humor...

so we get the 'SHE DOEN"T F***ING KNOW ME!!!
line which if you're just messing around with the song, makes it a lot of fun....

One of the highlights of Some Girls, and one of the best cover versions ever.....

So good in fact that it should have been a single!

The Some Girls version has this cool garage band thing going. by 81 it was taken to a whole other level.

Can't say that this is one of my favourite Stones cover versions, but I prefer theirs to the Temptations' original. I do like the way that the intro had developed by the time of the 1981 tour.

This track excites me too, but there's no need to shout!

Love Wyman's bass on this song in '78 and '81.

'Just My Imagination' & 'Ain't Too Proud to Beg' were both top notch and more than made up for 'My Girl'

Nice version but no where near as good as The Temptations original which is one of the best soul records of all time. Love the live 78 version though.

It is the essence of the magic Some Girls "twang" and guitar weaving and lilting/counterpoint.

Plus... the song has that all-important _feeling_.

Really damn good! In fact amazing!

The Temps gave it a more hopeful, dreamy sense of romantic longing.
Jagger captured the sadness and hopelessness of losing those dreams.
Great original and great cover.

Love it, probably my favorite cover they ever did. The Hampton version is pure bliss.

I actually prefer this live to the studio version on Some Girls, which is weird because generally I don't think the Some Girl's sound translates well live.

It is really great to have this cover song- after spending the 70s exploring reggae, disco, and mediocrity, they went all the way back to Motown and did it well. Nice touch on an album that is otherwise obsessed with sounding current and relevant.

I wasn't that thrilled about the studioversion but the one from Hampton 81 is fantastic. Better live in 81 than in 78. IMO.

The rockers did, imo, although this one was taken down a notch energy-wise and extended in concert. I also prefer the live versions. The Hampton version is as good as any of their peaks.
