OT: I'm ready for Rap/Hip-Hop - recommendations needed
Posted by: Lorenz ()

Ok, I am willing to give this another try. There is supposed to be good Rap and Hip-Hop out there and I have ignored it for long enough. To those of you open-minded experts out there, can you recommend me some starting points? Thanks!

SuperHeavy. If you're going to listen to crap, it might as well have a Stones connection.

I prefer listenin' the same old good records all day and all of the night rather than listenin' one second of that pure BS, particularly here in France.

Why? So we can have more room for Jagger-Taylor erotic fan fiction?

Just get latest Roots album. An instant classic.
They are influenced by funk & soul and they actually play all the instruments you can hear on their albums: drums, guitar, bass, keyboards ...

Oh, you mean the "dictator" of IORR? Probably will so we can read only about things "dictator" deems appropriate...like "what are you doing right now"....what are you listening to this very second".....you know, intelligent things

Why would this topic have to be banned? Are we not grown ass men and women who can talk about whatever we like? The Stones are an all inclusive act, incorporating different strands of pop music into their base sound for 49 years. What? Are we only supposed to listen to Beggars Banquet through Exile?

Haha, you're a brave man, Lorenz (for starting this thread, not for listening to hiphop).

My tips:
Regulate G-Funk Era -- Warren G
Big Boi and Dre Present...OutKast

Without being interested in contemporary hip hop,rap you might like to listen to the following...

Jungle Brothers
A Tribe Called Quest
Gang Starr
Boogie Down Productions
De La Soul
Public Enemy

....based on their albums of the late 80´s,early 90´s.
And of course some more, either with soul or reggae/raggamuffin´ influence.

Those demanding to ban this thread I recommend to listen to this years Jagger interview at the Live In Texas DVD.

Public Enemy were outstanding; their tracks always hold up.
Eminem is very good.
Someone mentioned the Rots' latest album "Undun" which is great.
I favor Knight Owl from San Diego myself. I love his backing tracks, and his Anglo/Spanish raps. He is old school though. But new school isn't much rap anyway.

You can't go wrong with the N.W.A. album, Straight Outta Compton. It's an absolute classic. It's probably some of the most explosive music you'll ever here.
