Were or are you a fan? I've been listening to some fantastic recordings from the mid 60's in San Francisco, it's great stuff.
Did you get a chance to see them in the 60's or at one of the big festivals? Has anyone seen them when Signe was singing in 65 - 66? What is your favorite album.

The classic lineup:

Bob Harvey (1965)
Jack Casady (1965–1972; 1989)

Drums:
Jerry Peloquin (1965)

I like the early Airplane, and Hot Tuna as well.

Hot Tuna still tours.

- Lurve them. I think I like them as much as I like The Doors, and I don`t see why the rest of the world don`t do the same. My faves are "Crown of Creation" and "Early Flight", a 1974 compilation of rarities.

Generally speaking, the trouble with "old" music, is that on a superficial level, it`s very much alike the music of today. Thus, the coolness of it all diminishes, undeserved and unfortunately.

Been in a bit of an Airplane phase myself of late.

To go back and realize how young and how bold they were on Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing At Baxter's...

Breathtaking work. Liberated and wildly unconventional, the Airplane's stuff still shines with a sense of possibility.

Picks:

"How Do You Feel?"
"Martha"
"Embryonic Journey"
"Young Girl Sunday Blues"
Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon"
"We Can Be Together"
"The Farm"
"Turn My Life Down"

these 2 are excellent albums:
Surrealistic Pillow (1967)
After Bathing at Baxter's (1967)

Wolfgangs Vault has many shows from the early 60's to listen to. Check out the 3 tracks from a November 1965 show. Lots of good shows from the Winterland in 1966.

Calliope Warehouse, (San Francisco,CA) November 6, 1965:

If you're a Jefferson Airplane fan, you must see the Coen Brothers' film, A Serious Man.

SPOILER ALERT: Don't watch this scene if you haven't already and plan to see it:

I enjoy the first album, Jefferson Airplane take off, they sound like such a folk band.

I guess Grace's first band was Great Society, I've seen their cds but have not heard them.

Grace talks about Altamont after 4:30 in this clip.
She takes responsibility for suggesting the Hells Angels for security.

I was a fan primarily because of Jorma's guitar playing. He had that real spooky, maximum treble sound and played that big ole hollow-body guitar. I really like the Volunteers album and saw them on the "Long John Silver" tour. I think that was their last tour. They were amazing but i was so high I don't remember a F--king thing. I was listening to the Long John Silver album just the other day and came to two conclusions. The first was that Long John Silver was an album made out of nothing but glamorized "jams" with Balin and Slick layering on their Anarchic lyrics. The second was that the Airplane play some of the most Paranoia inducing music I've ever heard. If you listen to their stuff stoned you can't help but be overwhelmed by the feeling that something really awful is about to happen. I'm getting chills just thinking about it.

One nugget about 'JA takes off' is it has an early version of "Let's get together" it would seem a few years before the Youngbloods very famous version that gets a lot of radio play even today. Youngbloods version may be better but JA does well enough and you look at what has become a mega-hit in the light of before it was so wellknown and it made me appreciate the famous version in a new light as well.

JA sings "Hey people" while most of us all know the Youngbloods' version "Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now".

And

"Get Together", also known as "Let's Get Together", is a song written in the early 1960s by American singer-songwriter Chet Powers (aka Dino Valenti).

[en.wikipedia.org]) and [en.wikipedia.org] Powers was in QUicksilver (QMS) as Dino Valenti

I believe the CD is way expanded from the original release. It now has 24 tracks.

It's probably not a classic like the others but I've seen it sell at a deep discount and it's okay, it's almost like beatnik coffee house music.

Balin was not a part of LONG JOHN SILVER.

Rare Quadrophonic mix of the Crosby-Kantner-Stills classic.

And a nice live version, as well.

whoa - love these guys - of all the essential 60s bands - they have never had an after-life - don't know why. Favs:
1) Baxters - just the most 'out-there arrangements with stuff happening all over the songs - but underneath there were real songs - all unconventional arrangements
2) Volunteers - fantastic start to finish - Eskimo Blue Day - totally psychedelic - and pre-saged environmental terrorism 30 years ahead of it ... listened to 'We Can Be Together' 50 times before I heard the 'Up Against The Wall M***F***' line because they sang it so sweetly - and Volunteers is a killer track to this day.

Volunteers came out about the same time Let It Bleed came out in late 1969 - two absolute classics both featuring Nicky H hit the streets at the same moment - that guy really got around.

Some incredible visual passages at 1:30 and at 1:50. 1;28 is INCREDIBLE!
My fave album by them is "Bless its pointed little head" because the songs are best there. Slick is held to a minimum. I never could take here; it's this "ooooh" wail that you turn on at the beginning of song and it never stops.
