On the surface it does sound odd but I don't think it's a bigger problem than it sounds. Keith wants to jam...period. That means, strapping on a guitar, riffing on some blues stuff, playing some old stuff, just getting together and getting their fingers warm again. Mick is the singer of the group and although yes, he plays guitar, jamming isn't exactly Mick yearns for. Mick is not one to partake in something as relaxed as this without trying to make something productive out of it like trying to write a new song or come up with new material. Keith says that it's not about writing new songs but more about just playing. It seems he feels guilty for letting 4 years pass without a single note being played between them which is the reason for getting together. In fact, this is probably something we'd see Keith do in the future once the band shuts down...he's feeling the itch so he wants to get together and play through an amp with Charlie.
I have done the same thing. Sometimes you just want to get together and play with your old buddies. You miss the friendships, the chemistry and mainly: the music. Nothing wrong with that.
In the end, it sounds like any other musician getting together with his friends to relax and play some old tunes like they used to. The only difference here is that these are The Rolling Stones so it's going to be news.

but you don't announce it man!!!!!!!!!!! by announcing it its almost like he's claiming the band is HIS. .he convened the "rolling stones".. mick is invited if he wants to show..
sorry, this is very bizzarre.. if mick sees this i think he's going to feel like keith is pressuring him through the media..

Odd talk from Keith Richards. He makes a public announcement that he will jam with Charlie and Ronnie in London in this month, and "Mick's welcome." Well, if Jagger will not turn up, it will not be a Rolling Stones jam session.

Who said he "announced" it? The press isn't what it used to be. Keith hasn't put out a statement, he did not set up a press conference nor did he send out a video message on his website. I would bet my money that someone (probably from RS mag) caught Keith in passing or perhaps at his recent awards ceremony and simply asked him "What's with the Stones?" and bam...Keith shared his news. Nothing earth shattering...just a small tidbit.
I doubt Mick doesn't know about this jam. Keith knows Mick better than all of us. If he hasn't "invited" him--it's because he knows he wouldn't enjoy it. Mick would get ancy sitting around jamming, riffing and BSing for a couple hours. For Mick, getting together with the Stones is work...not recreation.

haha okay. It's a conspiracy between Keith, Ronnie and Charlie to "bully" out Mick from the group.
Maybe things will look clearer to everyone after a few days when the excitement of this "drop of water in the desert" type of news story--- wears off.
Keith wants to jam, so he called the guys he usually plays music with. He put out an open invitation to the singer if he wanted to join. Case closed.

whats next?
"The Rolling Stones jam session went well according to Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts who are now awaiting Mick Jagger for a 50th Anniversary Tour. Ronnie Wood: "I was a little hesitant at first but the old magic was there and we still have the chops.. I had to play bass on a few tracks to flesh out the sound but it was there..." Meanwhile, Keith stated "I'd love to do it man and I think we are ready but you know you'll have to talk to Mick about it...but we're ready whenever called upon."

ha ha..invitation via Rolling Stone magazine?
there was no need to tell the media anything at all..
this is not the way you do things in a functioning band...

You mean the fact that people are disecting every word of the article? Just a bit of overreaction.Quote
