No chance that they'll be playing Slane again so soon. If ever again.

Rumour has it that the reunited Stone Roses will play Slane in July.

"why did Slane choose the same weekend, oddly on a Friday?"

Slane doesnt 'choose' the date of their annual concert. Its a movable event, worked around the headline act's tour schedule. And always has been.

The Stone Roses currently are definitely a headlining act.......they just sold out 220,000 tickets for 3 nights at Manchester's Heaton Park festival in 14 mins. The 3rd of those 3 nights sold out in 1 minute...............

This is precisely what I'm suggesting - I believe the Stones are that headline act.

"Rumour has it that the reunited Stone Roses will play Slane in July"

I believe that's been confirmed. This may be an American perspective (as the band is not very well known here beyond music geeks), but while the Stone Roses is a big reunion, it does not seem to me a headlining act.

In Ireland and in the UK, theyd be a bigger draw than the Stones. Especially at a festival which is traditionally geared towards younger audiences and considering the fact that they havent toured in 15 years or so.

The Stone Roses tour next year will be massive. In fact, it already is. See the above post.

The Rolling Stones will not be playing Slane Castle in 2012. If the Stone Roses play Slane, then that will be the only show there in 2012. They only have permission to stage one show per year (there was an exception in 2001 for U2 doing two shows, but that was a one off)

When/where? Just curious.

What I was suggesting is not that they'll play separate dates, but rather that they will play the same show, with the Stones as headliner. While Madchester apparently remains much bigger than I would have imagined, consider that Coldplay, the Foo Fighters and the Chili Peppers, all big bands, played Slane in 2003, but U2, a mega-band, was the headliner. Even if the Stones were no longer as popular as an opener (which I find unbelievable from across the pond), no one is going to go on after them.

Not a chance of Stone Roses supporting the Stones. They dont need to, and could sell more tickets in their own right.

The Chili Peppers headlined in 2003. U2 was 2001. Coldplay and the Foo Fighters werent as big in '03 as they are now.

Slane is a young person's festival, especially as its in the middle of nowhere. If the Stones were to play a major venue in Ireland, there are two massive stadiums in Dublin.

There are bigger concert draws than the Stones for the simple reason that most acts charge far less money.

The Stones doing a one off show to keep the ball rolling, so to speak, does make sense. It would end speculation of their demise and increase the value of their stock, at least to a younger generation of fans.

Thanks.

Me too. I wonder if the dissolution of R.E.M. have made him ponder his future.

I thought they had a new album coming out.

Again I say "STOP PEOPLE". These threads are making me old (I know I don't have to read em). No tour, no one-off, they'll just "fade away".

Welcome SecondSet. Nice way to introduce yourself!

The Hyde Park scenario sounds within the realm of imaginable. Good points.

So Bruce Springsteen has been announced as the Saturday headliner at Hard Rock Calling. And a member of Kasabian has effectively confirmed that they will play (and I assume headline) the festival. If so, that would be on Friday. This leaves open the Sunday slot.

Here are the past Sunday night headliners:
2006 - The Who
2007 - Aerosmith
2008 - The Police
2009 - Springsteen
2010 - Paul Mccartney
2011 - Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood

The only acts I can think of that would take Sunday night other than the Stones are U2 and Radiohead. I've heard nothing about touring plans by the former. The latter will be in Italy and Germany from June 30 to July 6, which suggests they might be headed for Hyde Park. Even if they did take Sunday, July 12 would still be available for the Stones.

Makes sense to me. They might as well nail it as close to July 12 as possible.

i suspect Hyde Park will be booking The Stone Roses for that slot.

I'm afraid you're right. In any case the reunion of The Stone Roses is more of interest of the festival audiences than the Stones anniversary
