SUPERHEAVY (Deluxe version Disc) Reviewed Song by Song (all 16) by Criss Cross Mind
Posted by: CrissCrossMind ()

Just got it from Amazon. Here's my first impressions-

SUPERHEAVY - Kicks Ass All The Way !!!

UNBELIEVABLE - Pretty Good, could fit on a Jagger solo album

MIRACLE WORKER - Where's Peter Tosh? (Yeah, I know he's dead)

ENERGY - high speed near dud, chorus ain't bad kinda, rest of it is pretty bad

SATYAMEVA JAYATHE - So So, No need for Jagger on this one AT ALL !!!

ONE DAY ONE NIGHT - Waitin' for Dylan's voice to start the song - a bit spooky but a very good song

NEVER GONNA CHANGE - This one's very nice, Straight off of a Jagger solo disc, almost country...

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE - I like the Marilyn Manson version better

ROCK ME GENTLY - M.O.R. Sounding kinda..... Next....

I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE - This song ROCKS !!! Joss Stone opens it yelling "What the f*ck is going on!?!?! Mick sings, "All you scary Politicians... you all sound like Magicians !!" Probably the best song on the album, TURN IT UP !!!

I DON'T MIND - Melancholy, slightly sad but nice. A keeper

WORLD KEEPS TURNING - A BIG BALLAD. Can see Michael Jackson doing this one

MAHIYA Very exotic, Indian sounding. Like it a lot

WARRING PEOPLE Jagger solo album stuff. Not bad, the music rocks. Jagger's voice sort of distracts

COMMON GROUND Oh no, more of that super fast reggae, don't like the tempo

HEY CAPTAIN Not Bad, Obviously meant to be a B-side since it's in the bonus song section (last 4) But deserves better...

SUMMARY - I basically like it. The thing is it doesn't really need or fit Jagger or Joss Stone. They don't really add to it (besides Joss having a Perfect Voice so she kinda does). Jagger is the odd man out here. It's not really his style (even though a few could fit on a Jagger solo. Still, he doesn't take away so it's BACK TO ZERO (LOL). There's a bit too much of that white man's reggae but so be it. Get the BONUS DISC with 16 tracks (not the 12 track disc). It is worth it. It's pretty good actually. Make Mick happy. God, the dude is still out there rockin' at almost 70 , trying new stuff. Good for you my man. NOW PUT OUT THE RED DEVILS DISC, COME ON MICK !!! (and play my backyard party next summer - all the free beer you can drink !!!) HE JUST CALLED (Knew the free beer would "reel him in" - LOL) BUY IT !!

Glad I could help stonesrule (it got a little held up, a few hours late due to some business stuff I had to get to). I have it on the sound system now. The more I play it the more I like it. This really surprises me since I really thought it wasn't gonna work, thought I would hate it. It's solid, high quality work, not perfect but enough good to very good songs to have it in the collection. BE SURE TO GET THE DELUXE 16 TRACKS VERSION - last 4 songs bring something extra to the party, it's a better album at 16, for sure !!! CC MIND

I also give it the thumbs up but my feeling is that it has such a modern production and sound that it will date very quickly. But right now it's putting a smile on my face....which is what pop music should do.

Yeah. Jagger's voice distracts - well said. On One Day One Night it distracts me so much, I had to skip to the next number. A low point in Mick's career, imo.

Beautiful People, Superheavy, Unbelievable and Miracle Worker are nice, though. And I like Marley's stuff here.

you got us all wrong! we said of his review "there were a LOT of parts of it
that we liked a LOT". so we are recommending this review to everyone we
know who would like to get some insight into the music that mick jagger
is currently excited about because it explains mick's enthusiasm so well.
we are RECOMMENDING this review to everyone we know for its brilliance.
with a few reservations of course, but nonetheless...

with regard to ourselves, we have written volumes about this record already
on IORR and we are hardly going to re-publish it on this thread.

this music is dense and layered and it will take even the sharpest listener
a good while until it opens up fully. this record aint a happy meal.
its at least a 14-course feast.

this is what ccr wrote:

ROCK ME GENTLY - M.O.R. Sounding kinda..... Next....

this is what we wrote (and this is just about the MUSIC. we havent even
had time yet to tell you how wonderful the singing is):

we tripping out gently at the moment on "rock me gently"

so effing perfect, almost beast of burden perfect

we speculated earlier about dave not being able to do the sweet shining guitar
solo on this one, but we may have been wrong about that. it may actually be
dave, based on some more listening we been doing to other dave stuff

here's a review dave excerpted on his web page: "Stewart presents gnarly rock...
and proves again that he is one of the absolutely best guitar players alive. — Piranha"

we got no idea who or what "Piranha" is, and we ain't saying the solo on
"rock me gently" would rate as high as THAT, but whoever it is playing, the
solo is shimmering and stunning, to the point that even taylorites maybe would
have to give a tip of the hat

we thinking, y'know, dave grew up idolizing keith and the stones, dave is like one
of us. yes, he did decide to play other kind of music, because he realized
he couldn't top the stones. so he did his best to find a way to become a
serious music maker and hit maker without being laughed at or dismissed as a
"keith richards" wannabe. he really smartly decided as a very young man that
there was no way possible to out-cool Keith, but he still wanted to make his
living in music. so he found a way forward. a way that after about 40 years
has paid off the biggest jackpot yet, in him becoming one of the people
personally and musically and business-wise closest to one of his absolute idols.

right now you see all around a lot of envy directed at dave. understandable,
but still, you gotta give some love out to a guy who has plain-worked his
ass off to put himself in a position to accept the baton pass, should he ever
be called upon.

which is our way of saying that the dave and mick guitars on "rocked me
gently" are so keith-and-ron-at-their-soulful-best (our highest praise)
that it is a complete gift for stones fans. not at all an imitation of the
stones, or their style, but so much in their spirit.

as for the lyrics, jeez, another week or two at least. joss is completely
skipping most of her consonants, to concentrate on pure tone, so we don't
have much hope for getting the real words...

but, as usual, if necessary, we make up something...

Mick doing the Black Eyed Beans.

Can't say I like him doing this. I even try to imagine a live presentation and to me he just doesn't fit in. Not a bad CD but not a good one either, would be forgoten the minute the Stones announce the tour.

He should have done a Blues album with different, well known musicians. Would have been more respectable.

Hi, nocomment, please care to answer SFF's earlier question about that peculiar diction in all your posts. viz the consistent use of plural for yourself.

Is it

- pluralis maiestatis (the royal "we" ) that you are using or
- is there a group of people hiding behind your screen name (who are you, folks?) or
- are you sporting a dissociative identity disorder (you're a "bunch of nice guys" )?

"May the good Lord shine a light on you ..."

Re: SUPERHEAVY (Deluxe version Disc) Reviewed Song by Song (all 16) by Criss Cross Mind
Date: September 21, 2011 21:56

I'm really torn by this album. Half the disc (I bought the deluxe edition) are songs that seem to be Mick's more than anyone else's. The easiest ones for me to get into are "Never Gonna Change" and "I Can't Take It No More" since those are practically Mick solo tracks.

I love "I Don't Mind" and it would probably be my favorite except for Damian's rap whch really doesn't fit the mood at all, particularly when he and Joss decide to quote "Sweet Dreams" as a nod to Dave. The clash of styles works best on "Unbelievable," "One Day, One Night," "Warring People," and "Hey, Captain." I would like "Energy" just as much if the opening rap and (even worse) Mick's frenetic rap weren't there.

There are times where the experiment works well, A. R. Rahman's contributions to the above songs seem a good example of that and Damian's raps work half the time, but other times Damian just seems like a poor fit. Obviously, my impressions are not everyone else's since plenty of people love all of it and plenty despise the whole thing from beginning to end. Joss generally comes off well. She and Mick do a vocal variation on the ancient art of weaving switching off from lead and back-up roles that I felt generally worked quite well throughout.

I'll keep playing it and see if my impression changes, but this is where I'm at in the first couple days of living with it.

I agree with the initial comment about Mick and Joss not really fitting... I'd actually like this album more without their singing, and I do not like the lyrics they sing. I don't like Stone's habit of echoing Mick's singing, it get's quite annoying. Which is not to say there isn't some great singing on here by both, just musically and lyrically it is not good, imo, and I'd like it more without the two of them singing. I think I like the last 4 bonus tracks better than most of the other tracks... I think Rock Me Gently actually is one of the more intriguing of the initial 12... but I am not all that excited to give this cd more listens, which is a bummer.

I didn't mind it was short, but some of the song reviews didn't really say anything, ie:
SUPERHEAVY - Kicks Ass All The Way !!!

UNBELIEVABLE - Pretty Good, could fit on a Jagger solo album

All I got from that is he likes those songs. I would be interested in what about the songs he likes or dislikes, without having to read through several chapters of analysis. Only my preference obviously.
