I reckon this is the best version...and very apt what with the forthcoming release!

78 versions alot better than 81...

I think we're in the minority, but I agree strongly with Scottkeef on this one. In fact, I think all of the Some Girls songs that were played in both '78 and '81 were better in '78.

I pretty much agree with Erik about the inconsistency in '78, though -- so, I guess I'm saying the stronger '78 versions of those songs are better than the '81 versions.

Great Ronnie solo:

So interesting to see the Stones changes through the first two decades and each incarnation so compelling.

The best version is the original studio version obviously. But the live 78 is a beautiful close second. At the end there, starting around 5 minutes - TRUE weaving. I could hardly tell who was playing what half the time. For me, I will give the 94 live version runner-up.

78, love it for it's groove and feel. I reckon in the 81 tour film it is one of the best moments in the film to see Arizona at dusk from the helicopter and then down to the stones on stage. It's a real half way point in the gig. The opening burst is over. Time to take stock and have a ciggie and spit out some cool grooves and notes near the drum riser. There are a couple of great moments in the 81' film where the band convene near the drum riser and all members are in one camera frame. It is particularly good in "All down the line'.

Yeah the 78 version is miles ahead of all. Sublime guitars and great Jagger vocals!

That 94' is actually not too bad. Love Ronnie's solo and then he hardly plays. Classic Ronnie he works hard for his money. It craps on 02' with it's dirge of a drum beat and general feel.

My vote goes to the 8-track studio version of the song. I love hearing the extra verse and the extended fade-out. I wish it would be released on CD (and maybe it will be included on the upcoming "Some Girls" deluxe edition).

How do you hear that sf37? Is that on Handsome Girls. I still haven't got it.

Hi hotspot3000. I'm not sure if it's the same version on "Handsome Girls" because I don't have that bootleg album. The copy of the song that I have is an mp3 copy made from the 8-track by another fellow IORR poster a while back. I'd be happy to e-mail you a copy of it if you like.

I would go with '78. Definitely not the 2007 version at the o2 Arena, show #1. No one could tell what the H Keith was playing!

Of all the songs that were played in both in '78 and '81...the best versions from '78 top the best versions from '81, and by a very wide margin. Not even close. Hampton is bad *indoor* gig in '78. [Or, well, okay, not a bad gig, but a farty and flabby gig.]

Re: Best version of Beast of Burden?

The studio version, closely followed by some of the live 78 versions.

I think the main thing which sets this aside from the 81 and later live versions is Jagger's singing - it's Jagger at his best and as many of you point out, the weaving is sublime. A great song...here's hoping when they tour again it's in the set list and it is stripped down....especially without Chuck!

Yes the Sun Devil version is really great, too, but I prefer the unedited version you can hear on many boots, e. g. "Devils and Deserts".

I don't like Jagger's voice here. Hoarse, flat and brutal. Was the ´78 tour the beginning of the yelling Jagger?

Nothing beats the studio version, all those layers of guitars, what a sound they got. Then for me it's Hampton.

...actually...it was the last of the great growl. Aside from throat problems on that tour he was phenomenal as were the rest of them.

I gave my vote for Bette here, Halfnanker. Just for the hell of it! And... I actually liked it, even though, I guess, you are not supposed to. Not around here, anyway.
